a) As soon as Nov 7 1937 Jules Henry, the French Charge d’Affaires, reported to Paris that President Roosevelt was interested in overthrowing Hitler, but that the majority of the American people did not share his views.

b) French Ambassador Saint-Quentin reported on June 11, 1938, that President Roosevelt suddenly blurted out during an interview that “the Germans understand only force,” and then clenched his fist like a boxer spoiling for a fight. He noted that the President was fond of saying that if “France went down, the United States would go down.”

c) Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau, Jr., telephoned Paris on March 14, 1938, to inform the French that the United States would support and cooperate with a Socialist measure of the Blum Popular Front Government to control, and, if necessary, to freeze foreign exchange in France.

I have to agree that the “sour grapes” angle kept occurring to me as I read this disappointing article. It weakens what might be more substantive points that Anglin makes about Fuentes’ flip-flopping, etc.
