History as a subject of study and publication has never been about the past, and for a reason devoid of any complexity, the past is inaccesible. So there can be no discovering "the truth about the past" because the past can not be recovered in the first place.

No. History is about the writing and reading of documents (and artifacts) in a present moment, when writer writes and reader reads. True, this realization was not arrived at even by our most advanced thinkers and writers until the last one hundred years.

But that is plenty of time for the rest of us to catch up, and its our responsibility that we do just that. From this perspective all of their statements about Irving, and not just Irving, are one embarrassing, and amusing, but most of all revealing own goal after the next. This is what helps explain that feeling of fraudulence one has when encountering the work and public statements of those operating out of a worn out tradition.
