I spend much time in Chile, where I have both friends and family, and long thought that the “Cono Sur” (Chile, Argentina, probably Uruguay and possibly Paraguay) might prove to be the last refuge of fast-fading Western civilization (which, contrary to another article by “Saker” this month, actually is heir of both antiquity and the Middle Ages). There, I seldom saw any but some Caucasians, a few aborigines and Orientals, and (the great bulk, perhaps nine-tenths, of the Chilean population); I never saw any blacks.

Never, that is, until a decade or so ago: first a trickle from Peru and Brazil, then a flood from Haiti — even in my southern town, where (I would have thought) the comparatively harsh Winters might have discouraged immigration from tropical climes. And now, there are growing numbers from Africa as well, all drawn by seeming abundance of basic, well-paid manual labor and by rather generous public and private charity. From what I observe, the results are similar to the effects of compelled racial integration in the United States: a coarsening of manners and tastes, particularly amongst the young; increases in both petty and violent crimes; lessening of trust (never great in Chilean society, even in the middle of the last century); increase in public costs, with eventual increases in taxation; and more.

So much for my hope that Chile might prove to be the life raft for our sinking civilization. The whole world appears to be doomed.

That’s Darwinism, except that as Darwinists we also have to accept that no two organisms have exactly the same self-interest. It’s a war of all against all. My wife and I have enjoyed the Jeeves & Wooster TV adaptations of the P.G. Wodehouse stories (produced in Britain.) We bought the series on dvd a year or two ago, but haven’t watched them all. It’s not really hard to see how the author’s experience has shaped his opinion. Mine is a bit different. When I was in grammar school, the guys who would usually try to take your lunch money were the bigger black kids. They were always looking for a way to “get over” on you -and on other black kids too. But my neighborhood was what they call “multiethnic”. It was primarily Italian, black, and Chinese, plus a smattering of many other cultures including Greeks, Syrians, Lebanese, Armenians, even a few Jews. Though the nuns told us of course we couldn’t buy our candy from them, ’cause they’d killed Jesus. Point is, I’d go over my friends’ houses and their moms would feed me beans, greens, and cornbread, and when they came over to my home my mom would feed them spaghetti and meatballs.

After a while, along came Boston’s urban renewal and the whole neighborhood got wiped out, because that land was just too valuable for poor working people to be living on. And as people went to the suburbs and started owning stuff like homes and cars and TVs, they started thinking that made them more special than folks who didn’t have so many of these things. After a while our children and grandchildren completely forgot where we came from – and denying our experience by quietly accepting American racism as our own was part of the price demanded for our American citizenship ticket.

As long as we keep seeing one another as “whites” irreconcilably different from “blacks” we’ll never get together to compare notes and figure our who the real enemy is. Isn’t it odd that we use those terms when none of us is actually black as coal or white as snow? While it may be true, to say that “Christians choose Nothingness” doesn’t explain why hatred has been demonized, which was the question I was trying to answer. The secularization of Christianity explains it well.
