You barely touched on one of my two American inventor heroes – George Westinghouse. My other hero is Major Edwin Howard Armstrong.

George Westinghouse was the inventor of the air brake for application on trains. Up until his invention, the railroads depended on “brakemen” to manually apply brakes to stop the train. This system of brakemen manually applying brakes resulted in the loss of thousands of lives in train wrecks. Westinghouse’s invention put an end to the manual application of brakes by brakemen and because of the implementation of Westinghouse’s air brake invention, countless thousands of lives were saved.

George Westinghouse also employed and worked closely with Nikola Tesla, treating Tesla with the utmost respect and dignity, very much the opposite of how Tesla was treated by Thomas A. Edison. Westinghouse also treated his employees with respect and dignity, never once experiencing a labor stoppage by any of his workers. When George Westinghouse died, there was a tremendous outpouring of grief by his employees, as the Westinghouse employees loved their leader. Contrast that with the labor relations of the late 20th and 21st centuries! The reader would do well to watch the PBS video ‘Westinghouse” – it goes into great detail about what an honest and honorable man Westinghouse was.

Major Edwin Howard Armstrong was a prolific inventor of radio circuitry. He invented the regenerative, the super-regenerative and the superheterodyne radio circuits. Unlike Lee deForest, who invented the first 3-element vacuum tube (the triode) and did not even understand how it worked (!), Armstrong completely understood the principles of how the tube worked and developed circuitry that would detect radio signals, as well as amplify them and generate them. Armstrong also single-handedly developed the frequency modulation (FM) broadcasting technology. Up until the invention of FM, it was widely assumed that “static” (interference caused by lightning storms) would always be a part of radio reception and that there would be no escaping the problem of static.

Armstrong’s FM system completely eliminated static caused by lightning storms and also made possible the transmission of radio signals that were true “high fidelity” – a quality unheard of in AM broadcasting. In addition to FM, Armstrong worked with the American and British armed forces in developing a vastly improved radar system. If it were not for Armstrong’s inventions, AM & FM radio, television and cell phones would not be what they are today.

Armstrong’s inventions and patents were stolen from him by such corporations as RCA and Motorola. These corporations used Armstrong’s inventions but refused to pay him the royalties due to his owning the patents covering those inventions. Armstrong became so despondent over all of the court battles that he took his own life on February 1, 1954. After Armstrong’s death, his wife continued wit the court battles and WON EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM. Again, the reader would do well to watch the PBS video “Empire of the Air: The Men Who Made Radio” – it actually tells the truth about Armstrong and his accomplishments.

Having amateur radio (ham radio) as my hobby, I owe a great debt of gratitude to Armstrong’s many inventions.

My pet theory as to the dynamic behind places and times of high achievement:

Ancient Greece and then Europe achieved so much because there was intense competition and rivalry between polities that nevertheless existed within a common framework with open communication between them.

The Greek City States fought constantly and sometimes exterminated each other, yet, obviously, they recognised their common identity; and their men of culture moved freely throughout Hellas. They developed their fighting techniques and weapons against each other; and these turned out to give them an overwhelming advantage against the Orient as a side-benefit rather than an intended effect.

Europe was a patchwork of cities, states, bishoprics, kingdoms, duchies, and so on, but all existed within a common framework known as Christendom, which had a common medium of communication, Latin. Italy reproduced this whole patchwork on a smaller scale and produced the Renaissance; early to late modern Europe was a field of near constant intra-European power struggle and warfare, which produced the scientific revolution, the industrial revolutions, and the modern world. Said warfare led to an accelerating arms race that, as with the Greeks, turned out to give us an overwhelming advantage against the entire rest of the world (not merely from military technology, of course, but from superior organisation, communications, and productive industry as well). Open communications, of course, meant that no one state could keep their advances to themselves for long, thus ensuring the continuation of the arms race.

So, competition within a common framework is what drives progress, like opponents on a multi player chessboard driven to intense concentration by their mutual rivalry, yet nevertheless all operating within the same system; and, of course, it helped that Europe had so many sources of culture from the past and from elsewhere to draw upon, in addition to its own.

It wasn’t long before the narrator was explaining how in the early 1600’s the Dutch built the city named Batavia over an existing village that they had razed. Then they started on about how because of the canals built as well, people were then segregated.

The Dutch wanted a similar design to Amsterdam – with canals and merchant houses along the canals.

However, what they did not realise is that the canals would lead to an explosion of malaria in that climate. Massive numbers of Dutch died. The Dutch East India Company was the richest company in the world at that time and Amsterdam was the centre of world finance.

In 1733 an unknown deadly disease broke out in Batavia (now Jakarta), then the main seat of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in Asia. Mortality among its personnel rose alarmingly and caused serious shortages of sailors, soldiers and craftsmen. Ever-growing numbers of people had to be sent from the Netherlands to Batavia to make up for the high losses. In the end, military posts could no longer be filled, homeward-bound vessels no longer be manned and precious cargo had to remain in Batavia. The unhealthiness of the town, ‘so deadly for the growth and prosperity of the colony [and] ruinous for the interests and finances of the Company’ (Nederburgh 1794), claimed more than 85,000 victims among VOC personnel. The ‘unhealthiness of Batavia’ remained unexplained through the ages. In this paper reasons for its origin and aftermath are proposed.

Actually Japan will allow very, very, very little – if any – (non-Japanese) immigration, Asian or not. There are about 700K Koreans, most of whom were born in Japan, but who are legally classified as “resident aliens”, meaning they are not considered ‘Japanese’.

There are also about 200K Muslims in Japan: don’t know what percentage are converts and what percentage are immigrants.

And there are about 2-3 million Japanese who are Christian.

I saw a picture of the Chinese moon lander that they are building to allow Chinese astronauts to land on the moon. It looks just like a copy of the NASA lander from the 60’s.

Or maybe he was just one of those oppressive white boys riding the coattails of the more innovative minority. I don’t mean to impugn the work of any of these women. I just despise the politically motivated rewriting of history that has continued unabated to present day.

I have never argued that people with “brown skins”, are not intelligent. I have myself been tutored in some subjects by people with brown skins, to believe otherwise. On a website called Vox, I was reading how Jakarta is sinking because of unregulated pumping of water from the aquifers beneath the capital, as there is a poor municipal supply of water. It wasn’t long before the narrator was explaining how in the early 1600’s the Dutch built the city named Batavia over an existing village that they had razed. Then they started on about how because of the canals built as well, people were then segregated. That’s when I turned it off. The Indonesians have had over four hundred years to make a decision on their city’s future and they are still whining about the Dutch from centuries before. It’s probably a concerted build up to receiving reparations for the rebuilding of a new capital. So once again the white mans at fault.

Hollywood’s twisted view of the world is part and parcel of its whole system.
It seems that in Hollywood’s depiction of leaders, they are almost ALWAYS portrayed as soft-spoken educated blacks, despite the truth being otherwise.
There is a “method to the madness”.
Many whites got their first depiction of (benign) black behavior with Sydney Poitier who performed in many films in the 1960s. Many whites saw Poitier as the typical negro, unlike reality.

Hollywood has always been anti-technology, especially when utilized by average Americans. Almost always, automobiles as portrayed as pollution-spewing vehicles while it is “trendy” for actors to be portrayed utilizing buses, subways and trains in their depictions of life. Living in a crowded New York City “walk-up” is also a part of the equation.
All in all, “The Martian” was not a bad film. I did notice that “at the top” a black man makes decisions that “saves the day”.
It is interesting to note that “back in the day” (1960s), blacks were opposed to spending taxpayer dollars for NASA space projects, demanding that “the money be spent to improve conditions on earth”. Blacks still do not understand that the spin-off technologies that are a result of the space program have improved life in immeasurable ways.

Its too bad these black “genius” scientists cannot invent a super rocket that would take all their Bros to a planet in a distant galaxy. We could use the perks we dole out to them and finance the project.

Then again we can’t even get these complainers to return to Africa where they would be much happier. Free housing, food stamps, welfare and other cash handouts aren’t everything !

To my way of thinking, a mud hut with straw roof, eating leaves and digging for grubs with a sharpened stick could be a rewarding and peaceful existence away from the white man.

Why dont we have history months for Whites, Chinese, East Indians, Japanese, Eskimos, Russians and South Pacific Islanders and of course Jews and Arabs??

How can blacks (I mean Afro Americans) who were born here have black history ? In the US, black history is American history.

What is even black history in Africa where each country has a multitude of tribes ? And whatever history there is is inconsequential. What ? On February 31st of 1669 Chief Bingo of the Bongo tribe drove 40 head of cattle over the Bungo river saving his tribe from starvation ? In addition, black history in Africa is submerged in white accomplishment with records started only when the white man arrived.

Are these people so desperate they need some root to hold on to ? The black man never accomplished much. Even in Africa 99% of the infrastructure was white built and 99% of the infrastructure was black destroyed. Roads in Europe were thousands of years old at a time when transportation in Africa meant following animal trails through the bush with porters carrying the baggage on their backs.

When Mohammed Ali returned from his fight in Zaire he said he was grateful the white man brought his Grand Daddy to the US. Dont blacks get it ?

Personally, and I think Kamala should do this, we should have a holiday for black history. We should also have a holiday for every other race. That way we whites can take a rest from paying the bills and hang out idle every day of the year like most blacks do.

But here is one pattern to observe when recollecting the notoriety of, for a lack of a better universal term, women’s rights activists (some of which through no fault of their own have been given that descriptor posthumously): they all seem to be beneficiaries of wealth or privilege or both, and many of those seem to have borne their causes out of nothing more than boredom, that being a consequence of being born of or married to wealthy men of the time.

Juliette Low, Susan B. Anthony, Amelia Earhart, Jane Addams, Eleanor Roosevelt; all the daughters of privilege who’s effort were the result of having too much free time on their idle hands (the devil’s tools, as they say). And aside from a couple examples of ill advised bravery, did little to advance the achievements of euro-descended peoples and in many cases in can be argued they worked to reverse or undermine those achievements.

Aristotle and Confucius were contemporaries. Aristotle was Plato’s student. Plato was Socrates’ “student”. Thus Confucius not “first”. Socrates, along with Hindu contemporaries, laid out the simple infrastructure of the Golden Rule, as did Hebrew writers in the Torah and the Stoic philosophers with whom the Apostle Paul was familiar.

I thought the inclusion of the Golden Rule in the article was a hiccup, too, but just a hiccup.

Around 1990 I read a defense of Western civilization in a Plain Dealer op-ed that was astonishing for its persuasiveness and concision. My memory is very dim, but I do believe it was run as a reply to a bout of public Western civ-/White-bashing. I think the intent was to demonstrate that the bashers knew nothing of the civilization they were slapping about.

The author placed Western civ as re-emerging about 1500 from a 1000-year dark night of internal warfare, and invasions or threats of invasions from Asiatic marauders coming from the east, and Islamic invaders from the west and southeast. The author’s genius was to portray the West and her peoples as profoundly weak, until they found the wherewithal to throw off the invaders and divert some of their war-making energies into exploration, trade, and, by God, yes, colonization and the re-introduction of slavery, too.

I think the overall argument was that the West’s (and Whites’) biggest bashers seemed to have no clue that their public bashing has been enabled by the sciences and arts and political structures that were not to be found before the West got its post-1500 burst of energy. In a nutshell–the total demonization of the West by, say, American or European Blacks and others who choose to live in the West is a dishonest racket.

My dim memory has not done justice to that fine article. I don’t recall that author’s name or credentials.
