India is like a sacred cow that is being fattened up by the West for a Texas Barbecue. In the short term the easiest high growth pathways for India involves becoming heavily dependent on technology controlled by the West.

By the mid-2030s, India will be a bigger economy than today, but most of the growth over the 2015-2035 period will have been built on a foundation controlled by the West. At this point the West will have enormous leverage over India. Disobeying the West will mean invalidating the foundation that growth of past 20 years was built on.

One scenario I can see happening is US uses social media platforms like Meta or X to influence Indian elections. Indian government tries to exercise sovereignty by ordering these platforms to censor certain things. US government then weaponize tech/economic dependence to force India to back down.

It is not that India can’t ban Facebook/X/Google and develop its own platforms. India’s ability to export services to the US to pay for other imports depend on India not developing sovereign technology platforms.

India’s current situation with the US is similar to China in the 2005 era. US still has confidence that it can control India in the long run but it is more cautious than it was in the past so it is building more failsafes in case India becomes disobedient.

India for example is being encouraged to heavily invest in capital intensive industries like legacy semiconductor manufacturing. US retains the ability to brick everything via sanctions and render billions of $ of Indian investment worthless.

Having learned from the experience with China, US is now very careful to monitor for any sign of attempt at building tech sovereignty by India.

Many people think India is stupid for being so heavily dependent on the US for engines to power its next generation fighter fleet.

The problem is, India is already heavily dependent on the US for its current economic growth. If India didn’t convince the US that it will continue to be heavily dependent on the US for critical things far into the future, how can the US trust India?

The price of being allowed to grow inside the US system is allowing the US to hold a kill switch over the Indian economy and military.
