I don’t hold out much hope for ending the gang violence of the inner cities, which is often a sort of tit-for-tat vigilante violence of a sort, since the gangs are so entrenched. The best that could happen for the residents of these areas is that gangs would unite, which would pose an even larger problem for everyone else.

The major gangs are a big issue, even if the gangs don’t unite or form a political movement. I had friends in the navy tell me that certain areas of ships were no-go areas for non-gang members, and other branches of the military are surely infiltrated.

The gang affiliations are so strong in my area that school redistricting or consolidation often results in violence due to placing members of different gangs in the same schools, and these are just the children! I think gangs are an expression of the culture of these areas, so I don’t hold out much hope. And it gets worse when you consider that we are importing much more powerful gangs and international drug cartels with the immigrants we are bringing in, which makes it hard to believe that there isn’t political corruption involved already.

Who in America is willing to take on the problem honestly? Not the politicians and the people controlling them.

I think local law enforcement fails through lack of critical information. The witnesses to murder and other violent crime refuse to talk. They are afraid, for good reason. The solutions, if any exist, must involve active participation of the neighborhood peaceful. I think you need a threshold level of solid commitment, combined with a modest level of anonymity. As I understand it, vigilante justice typically is cloaked in secrecy agreements, disguise, or what have you. But at a gut level the peaceful neighbors must be willing to expose themselves to a great deal of risk, and to fight fire with fire — e.g. make an example of a few to educate the many.

If you are talking about urban violence in the U.S., the usual explanations are some combination of race, culture, history and economics, which I’m sure you know. Race and culture definitely have roles to play, but I’m not sure what roles history or economics have to play in killing your neighbors or destroying one’s own neighborhood. I can’t even fathom why those things happen.

Leave out the racial stuff and it sounds like the left of the late 20th century. Today, pro-Clinton drones consider themselves “left” and Sanders supporters are of the “far left”. The “left” today is concerned with identity/lifestyle politics, shutting down dissenting voices and hating on white people by default. Economics? Liberty? Sane foreign policy? Conspicuous by their absence. What the hell happened? How did the Democrat center-right become “the left”? How did center-right “liberal” become synonymous with “left” and the loudest opposition to state and corporate power start coming from the right?

I am curious regarding very high rates of violence in densely populated urban neighborhoods. The ingredients for vigilante justice are there; the killers and their locations are generally known, the peace-loving residents are superior in numbers and potentially in weaponry, why don’t the peace lovers hunt down the outlaws individually and eliminate them? What prevents this? The “wild west” was likely much safer than many urban neighborhoods today.

Homosexual: a person who is homosexual.

Homosexist: a person who believes homosexuality should be celebrated and worshiped by society.

Look at the GOP and you could swear it is run by a bunch of homosexists.

Homosexism drives so much of our politics.

It is difficult to be right when everyone dumps on you, but it is very easy to be completely stupid while being fawned over. I should have moved my family to Uruguay many years ago. Too late now.
