What Is the West?

It looks like John Derbyshire (born June 1945, indeed now past the 80-year mark of this earthly incarnation) is now writing one 1000-word column per month for Chronicles Magazine. The column is titled “The Straggler.”

He says that on his 80th birthday he retired from writing (and from recording his spoken-word versions of certain writings, i.e., Radio Derb). But in fact, since the early weeks of 2025, he’s been writing for Chronicle (at this leisurely rate of this one 1000-word magazine column per month). Not much output, but maybe a better format that he can do a lot with. I refer to the relaxing form of the magazine column, as a genre.

Also: I’ve noticed Mr. Derb has been posting a lot more often to Twitter [@DissidentRight] since his retirement announcement. Derbyshire used that medium to announce the unexpected death of the Z-Man, late-June 2025. The two were close. Z-Man hosted Derb for a year (mid-2024 to mid-2025) after his former home VDare was closed permanently in mid-2024. Derbyshire’s Twitter post about Z-Man’s death was the first way many heard of the death of the longtime blogger.

[…] Lee [Kuan Yew], who died at age 91 in 2015, was, in my opinion, one of the greatest statesmen of the past 100 years, and the success of Singapore under his leadership is one of the most politically instructive stories.

Its a well know fact that the jew, sand-nigger arab, nigger all gravitate towards the West and the one they want to try to conquer. To steal our racial and ethnic sir names is the lowest form of racial warfare…The yids have been doing this for a couple of centuries now and the arabs and nigs are just copying of what the low-life kikes have been doing…

A provocative take on politics and power narratives.

It’s not true that the Romans went on a genocidal campaign against the Gauls and other tribes that occupied present-day France. At that point, with their resources already strained to hold mainly their Eastern frontier from the Persians (known as the Sassanids at the time) and what remained of the Macedonian dynasties in the Levant and Egypt, Rome could ill-afford not to, rather than outright genocidal campaigns, simply acquire what came to be termed “Foederati”, from which we derive the English words Federal and Federation. These tribes, often after a single battle, or at least a few battles, were fought, with the usual outcome being the superior tactics of a Roman Legion prevailing in a manner that today we’d term “Shock and Awe”, the locals would thus be cowed and inclined to sign a treaty with the Romans. Often this included the eldest son of the local chieftain being ransomed, and if the kid was young enough, sent to Rome to be adopted by a prominent family, raised as a Roman, and usually, upon maturity, went into the Roman Army, often swiftly being granted an officer’s commission. The idea was that this young man, having been turned into a Roman, often already having married a Roman girl, would thus identify with Rome, and, sent back to pacify his former peoples, would bridge the cultural gaps. This USUALLY worked, though this practice backfired in spectacular fashion in the case of “Hermmann” WRT the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in AD 9.

But when the practice of adopting local sons of the nobility of tribes they’d subdued worked, it was also useful in raising at first “Foderati” forces to fight alongside the Romans as auxiliaries, but later, they became full-fledged Roman Legions in their own right. While this literally fleshed out the Roman Army, it did have a drawback: over time, the “local” Legion, if not sent to other parts of the Empire, as legionaires were often occupied in peace times, aside from drilling and maneuvers, in building of the famed Roman roads, forts, bridges, aqueducts, and other marvels of Roman Civil Engineering, they had more invested in their local province than in Rome itself. Over time, this is what contributed to the Western Roman Empire collapsing in the Fifth Century AD, by then, it ws an “empire” in name only, with the various provinces already economically and militarily self-sufficient, and Rome itself seen as unnecessary, even an ANNOYANCE.

What does IWSB stand for, and it is similar to what my Dad taught us. 1 or 2 friends who are colored will be friends until their are 3 or more. When you are on the same side of the road as a group of unknowns, change sidewalks. My Dad was good friends with the State President of the NAACP, they worked on projects together, raising funds for poor kids to afford a physical and equipment like cleats and shoes. They talked on the phone, and monitored my brothers behavior, as he was friends with the youngest son.

I remember the day things changed, there was an assembly, for the negroes ONLY, as we called them in 1969. As three of the sons of my Dads friend, and mine came out of the meeting, they were riotous. Chest bumping, and cornering another of my friends who took umbrage, and as them “WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU GUYS”. I don’t know what the assembly was, and why it was allowed to be shown to HS students, but it must have been hateful and inflammatory. Out of the 3 brothers who were in that assembly, only one was pleasant to me again.

We formed a extra curricular league for football later that year, divided up by gym classes. Thing was though, the school allowed the black players to form their own team. Not only that, we were allowed only gym shoes to play in. The black team wore cleats, and the gym teachers wouldn’t make them play in tennis shoes.

A small story, from my small perspective, but it was reality. A few years later I was working on the local mall construction, we had one friend who was black on the crew. We were having a smoke outside, and a black guy walked up and asked him for “a Kool brotha”. The black friend went from speaking English to sounding like Jasmine Crockett last week. He then easily slipped back into English after. Another eye opener, we were different forms of people, and it has been clear since then.

The problem isn’t the nonsense it’s your ignorance. No romanization system is perfect and whichever system gave us “Peking” is more imperfect than most, but screw you at the end of the day. People did indeed say “Peking” for decades. So fucking what? Should we still be calling the country Turkey? What about Burma?

How can the Persian Gulf be called the Gulf of Arabia?

Case in point: in Tibetan “Drepung” (heap of rice, a place name) is transliterated ‘Bras.sPungs. How do they get from “brass spungs” to “Drepung”? Don’t know, don’t care. Actually I do know because my toilet training didn’t produce a whiner.

Ever think it might represent a regional pronunciation? Quick, how many Chinese dialects and topolects are there?

If you can’t cope that’s sad but it’s on you.

MEH – Kudos! Z-Man has an occasional article on TBP.

I’m annoyed that nobody took my puzzle seriously, at least you did, at least in terms of permutations.

Allwing four as a base, as it is the second power of two, makes it a little dull. The most interesting one that are closest to A.D. year numbers are

2^4 x 5^3 = 2000, and the year of the now, 3^4 x 5^2 = 2025.

Some other numbers in the rule of excluing four as a base are interesting. The point is to do all calculations for it mentally, no paper, no calclator.
