Before Jackson has secured approval for the trial, he travels to the Vatican and asks the pope to publicly endorse the idea of putting Nazi leaders in the dock. The pope initially refuses, saying he cannot get involved in political matters.

Jackson then delivers what feels like the film’s mic-drop moment: he confronts the pope about the Church’s early agreement with Hitler’s regime and asks why the Vatican was so quick to recognize the Nazi government. The pope replies that he did what he had to do to protect Catholics. Jackson answers, “It’s a pity the Jews didn’t have someone to do that for them.”

I would like to share a few thoughts.
In my opinion, National Socialism has been realised in today’s China. This is probably a blessing for Chinese society, as in earlier times the next famine was just around the corner and class differences seemed insurmountable unless one won a competition for a career in the civil service.
In Central Europe, on the other hand, I doubt that the majority would have willingly accepted the socialist model in peace times. The lower classes understand social justice to mean free lunch for all. They do not understand that there’s always someone who pays for it, and they do not care as long as it is not them. That is why they follow the pied pipers. In Europe, there was a young elite of educated idealists who, sadly, perished on both sides in the trenches of the First World War. Had they survived, the socialist ringleaders would have had a harder time after the war than with the gullible masses.
To put it briefly: communist ideologues have been trying for over a hundred years to raise an army of clueless fools. They label the self-governing middle class as Nazis, which is perfidious framing: the National Socialists are just as much an enemy of conservative values as the international socialists are.
In my opinion, if Germany had not been destroyed, i.e. shattered as it unfortunately was, and if Nazi ideology had renounced its absurd megalomania, the Germans would have peacefully returned to what they love doing most: identifying, analysing and solving problems.

There is another aspect that I do not understand: the irrational hatred of the American elite towards the German Reich and its inhabitants. A large proportion of the white population is of German descent; President James Garfield learned German specifically so that he could give his campaign speeches in German communities. Incidentally, his assassination was as great a loss as that of J.F. Kennedy. His murderer is now portrayed as mentally disturbed, but I remember reading that he disagreed with Garfield’s general policy, especially regarding finance: “Any party which commits itself to paper money will go down amid the general disaster, covered with the curses of a ruined people.”
Roosevelt was probably embittered because defeated and impoverished Germany succeeded in what he had failed to achieve with his New Deal, namely an end to its economic crisis.

Thirdly, I suspect that today’s Germans have just as little in common with their ancestors from a hundred years ago as today’s Palestinians have with theirs from before 1935. The friendliness and hospitality of the people in the Holy Land at that time was legendary, at least according to my grandfather. A hundred years of mistreatment and oppression leave their mark, and traumas are passed down from generation to generation. This is especially true with ethnic Germans, who have been branded with collective guilt, and started developing peculiar strategies to deal with this burden, Antifa being just one of them. The only fair chance to confront the past, namely an objective reappraisal and the removal of taboo subjects, remains denied to them to this day.

In 1938, an anthology of the Zionist leader Vladimir Jabotinsky appeared in Vienna under the title “Der Judenstaat” (“The Jewish State”), in which he used the expression “favorable storm” for events that make life so unbearable to the Jews in their current host countries that they chose emigration to Palestine driven by the events. “6 million of my people have been killed by Nazis.”

I must say I was a bit surprised when hearing how strongly – and in my experience at least surprisingly uncritically- you seem to embrace this Irving-theory about Joseph Goebbels and alleged affair-related-tensions leading to Kristallnacht excesses (and allegedly even thereby WW2).

This could be just me mis-reading/-interpreting of course, but if I may, I wonder:

1- While undoubtedly David Irving has done great work and with all due respect to both of you, you usually cite as proof of his general correctness and quality the Lipstadt-trial and that the hostile side only could find 20 factual errors in all his main works and seem to have left it with that for at least I have since not been able to find any really thorough scrutiny of claims by him whenever he is mentioned here?

The problem with the Lipstadt-investigators as Litmus-test was/is of course that they ONLY were interested in errors by Irving that were beneficial to their side, ALL those wrongly depicting revisionist facts were of course never even looked at.

In my research -as mentioned- David Irving presents a large amount of great solid evidence in is works that withstands such scrutiny with flying colours.

BUT/AND equally he has over time presented a large amount of claims that do absolutely not and are even extremely surprising in their factual unreliability and non-objectivity.

A large problem usually seems to be that people reading Irving are not capable of reading German, thus lack the ability to really check his sources to the end and most notably notice also when he leaves out sources and contexts contradicting his interpretations and when what he presents as source is actually not the original one, but his entirely subjective interpretation of it.

Especially in his books and theories about Himmler and Goebbels, unfortunately much of the latter can be found, including his Kristallnacht- interpretations (taken up in this article). These books sadly leave a lot to be desired when it comes to objectivity, which indeed was his greatest strength in earlier works.

2- Specifically regarding the Crystal night, here Irving`s main points regarding the role of Goebbels on nov 10 1938 in short form:

“That’s the way it is with diaries. You’ve got to know how to evaluate them. (…) I’m something of an expert with diaries, because I’ve been looking at people’s diaries as an historian for the last 30 or 40 years, and I know the things to look for.”

– This sadly is exactly Irving at his worst and exactly like Scott`s linked to article documents he has unfortunately done time and time again over the years.

Irving honestly claims here that though the original primary source (Goebbels diary) says the exact opposit of what his theory is, we have to simply believe him turning it on its head because “he is an expert in diaries”.
And sadly fascinatingly at the core all his theory is based upon is just this, for he does never actually present any solid primary evidence for his allegation that Göbbels willfully counter-ordered Hitler:

All he does present is again instead of a secondary document his entirely arbitrary interpretation of a single unclear formulated phrase within it (letter to 42 Gauleiters on 10 nov 38):

“The anti-Jewish Aktionen [operations] must now be called off with the same rapidity with which they were launched. ”

-Which he interprets as proof for an official earlier unsanctioned order given by Göbbels for which he again presents no primary evidence whatsoever, no official trace was ever found of it and in turn to hold up this part of his house of cards theory the best Irving has to offer are alleged hearsay remarks during post-war interrogations with again giving no exact source nor text:

“references to it were made during the postwar interrogation of one or two of the Gauleiters, and there’s also a hint in his diary that he had given certain orders the previous day.”

So to sum up as evidence for his Göbbels order theory Irving has not even one piece of documentary evidence, neither the order nor any document stating that such one was given in the first place. Infact he turns the documentary evidence that does exist arbitrarily on its head and cites hearsay claims.

And to sadly prove my second main critique point of Irving misrepresenting by omitting original German sources, his last claim “there’s also a hint in his diary” is a very dishonest in context.

No, when checking the original source diary entry:

There is absolutely no hint therein that Göbbels send out orders against Hitler`s will, the exact opposit, from its context it shows that not only Irving omitted the crucial entry that Göbbels and Hitler met already in the early evening and ALL the orders send out by the former were directly ordered by the latter :

“Ich gehe zum Parteiempfang im alten Rathaus. Riesenbetrieb. Ich trage dem Führer die Angelegenheit vor. Er bestimmt: Demonstrationen weiterlaufen lassen. Polizei zurückziehen. Die Juden sollen einmal den Volkszorn zu verspüren bekommen. Das ist richtig. Ich gebe gleich entsprechende Anweisungen an Polizei und Partei”

In addition Irving also omits that Göbbels infact was surprised-as Hitler- as they realized the extent of the violence that had broken out and also tried to stop the burning of Synagogues at least in some cases:

“Ich will ins Hotel, da sehe ich den Himmel blutrot. Die Synagoge brennt. Gleich zum Gau. Dort weiß noch niemand etwas. Eine Synagoge wird in Klump geschlagen. Ich versuche sie vor dem Brand zu retten. Aber das mißlingt. ”

And that he does freely (self-incriminatingly) admit in his entries to having ordered the smashing of windows in certain Synagogues (while explicitly not condoning deliberate harming of civilians):

“Ich weise Wächter in Berlin an, die Synagoge in der Fasanenstraße zerschlagen zu lassen. ”
“In Berlin brennen 5, dann 15 Synagogen ab. Jetzt rast der Volkszorn. Man kann für die Nacht nichts mehr dagegen machen”

And most of all, all the entries of 11 nov are entirely incongruent with all of Irvings assertions (for which as shown above he does not even have 1 single peace of primary evidence to show).

“Mit kleinen Änderungen billigt der Führer meinen Erlaß betr. Abbruch der Aktionen. Ich gebe ihn gleich durch Presse und Rundfunk heraus.”

Not the slightest trace is to be found in these or later entries that there was a dispute let alone raging anger between Göbbels and Hitler during those days.

Of course one can-as Irving does- simply claim that Göbbels totally lied in his own diary and actually inverted all the events, but without solid evidence this is nothing but an entirely unproven loose claim and not serious historiography.

To note in addition is that firstly:

Irvings entire lecture above is riddled with the nastiest below the belt personal smears against Göbbels, stooping even as low as ridiculing both his physical appearance and sex-life, for cheap audience laughs. These unfortunately are not the characteristics of a serious historian.

And secondly to note that even just from an overview perspective there are very peculiar aspects to Irvings general theories about the entire Hitler-Himmler-Goebbels relationship, namely that in fact a Holocaust of Jews DID indeed partly happen (with around a Million of gassed victims -mainly in the Reinhart-camps, see article linked to), orchestrated by Himmler&Co WITHOUT HITLER KNOWING ANYTHING.

And this -sorry to say objectively borderline absurdly artificial- theory underpins much of how he then presents those figure (overall very negatively).

Regarding Goebbels, the greatest problem being naturally that there are virtually no books at all (not surprisingly either for publishing such is either forbidden by law or academically detrimental in most western/European countries) out there even attempting to neutrally present the character and work of Joseph Goebbels (after Hitler probably the worlds second most maligned/propagandized person of the century), so contra-checking Irvings claims against such works is hard to impossible.
