You could try to install jvisualvm and do CPU profiling to see what's taking so much time. For me (debian stretch, i3) it was gnome ATK wrapper that really killed the performance. See https://stackoverflow.com/questions/47985068/bug-in-gnomes-java-atk-wrapper-how-to-disable-accessibility-for-a-swing-compo for a way to disable it. --- ** [bugs:#4078] TDO DIR. CS jEdit 5.5 File Open (Slow) Bug 2019-03-20** **Status:** open **Group:** normal bug **Labels:** trondelta TDO file open jEdit 5.5 2019 **Created:** Wed Mar 20, 2019 12:40 AM UTC by Mathias Hollstein **Last Updated:** Thu Mar 21, 2019 01:41 AM UTC **Owner:** nobody **Attachments:** - [activity.log](https://sourceforge.net/p/jedit/bugs/4078/attachment/activity.log) (145.2 kB; text/x-log) **Preamble:** This is *not* a patch, complaint, question, feature request or plugin bug! **Assumptions:** TRON-DELTA.ORG Xubuntu SE 2018 (X64/AMD64) Linux v4.15.0 (SMP x86-64) jEdit v5.5.0 on OpenJDK JRE v1.8.0-191 and OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM v25.191 mixed mode * jEdit is configured via configuration menu, without hacks or illegal/no-working items loaded * jEdit installed but inactive (for testing) plugins are: Common Controls ErrorList Info Viewer JDiffPlugin LucenePlugin MarkerSets Process Shell Project Viewer Sessions SideKick WhiteSpace **Bug Description:** Opening several files at once (1 to ~10 files) works fine, while opening more, e.g. 20, 30, 50 or 100 files at once, takes a long time (approx. 1 second per file) to open them. For testing the /home/<username>/.jedit/ directory was backed-up and the erased. After starting jEdit with a fresh ~/.jedit directory and default configuration, the issue was still present when opening multiple files at once via the File --> Open. In jEdit version 4.x, opening even 300+ files at once was not an issue and took only a few seconds. The more files are already opened / registered (BufferSet and EditBus) the longer each additional file open operation takes. With 100+ files the system slowly comes to a halt and 200+ files required me to switch TTY and kill jEdit after 20 minutes. **Logs:** - The follwong operations took 2 seconds, loading 4-5 files of 25 total 1:08:06 AM [AWT-EventQueue-1] [debug] BufferSet: 515504231 addBufferAt(FileZilla.desktop (~/.desktop/),-1) 1:08:06 AM [AWT-EventQueue-1] [debug] BufferSet: 515504231: Buffer added FileZilla.desktop (~/.desktop/) at 13 1:08:06 AM [AWT-EventQueue-1] [debug] EditBus: BufferUpdate[what=CREATED,view=org.gjt.sp.jedit.View[active],source=FileZilla.desktop (~/.desktop/)] 1:08:06 AM [AWT-EventQueue-1] [debug] EditBus: BufferChanging[what=BUFFER_CHANGING,source=org.gjt.sp.jedit.EditPane[active]] 1:08:06 AM [AWT-EventQueue-1] [debug] EditBus: EditPaneUpdate[what=BUFFER_CHANGED,source=org.gjt.sp.jedit.EditPane[active]] 1:08:06 AM [AWT-EventQueue-1] [debug] EditBus: BufferUpdate[what=LOAD_STARTED,view=org.gjt.sp.jedit.View[active],source=Firefox.desktop (~/.desktop/)] 1:08:06 AM [AWT-EventQueue-1] [debug] BufferSet: 515504231 addBufferAt(Firefox.desktop (~/.desktop/),-1) 1:08:06 AM [AWT-EventQueue-1] [debug] BufferSet: 515504231: Buffer added Firefox.desktop (~/.desktop/) at 14 1:08:06 AM [AWT-EventQueue-1] [debug] EditBus: BufferUpdate[what=CREATED,view=org.gjt.sp.jedit.View[active],source=Firefox.desktop (~/.desktop/)] 1:08:07 AM [AWT-EventQueue-1] [debug] EditBus: BufferChanging[what=BUFFER_CHANGING,source=org.gjt.sp.jedit.EditPane[active]] 1:08:07 AM [AWT-EventQueue-1] [debug] EditBus: EditPaneUpdate[what=BUFFER_CHANGED,source=org.gjt.sp.jedit.EditPane[active]] 1:08:07 AM [AWT-EventQueue-1] [debug] EditBus: BufferUpdate[what=LOAD_STARTED,view=org.gjt.sp.jedit.View[active],source=FontForge.desktop (~/.desktop/)] 1:08:07 AM [AWT-EventQueue-1] [debug] BufferSet: 515504231 addBufferAt(FontForge.desktop (~/.desktop/),-1) 1:08:07 AM [AWT-EventQueue-1] [debug] BufferSet: 515504231: Buffer added FontForge.desktop (~/.desktop/) at 15 1:08:07 AM [AWT-EventQueue-1] [debug] EditBus: BufferUpdate[what=CREATED,view=org.gjt.sp.jedit.View[active],source=FontForge.desktop (~/.desktop/)] 1:08:07 AM [AWT-EventQueue-1] [debug] EditBus: BufferChanging[what=BUFFER_CHANGING,source=org.gjt.sp.jedit.EditPane[active]] 1:08:07 AM [AWT-EventQueue-1] [debug] EditBus: EditPaneUpdate[what=BUFFER_CHANGED,source=org.gjt.sp.jedit.EditPane[active]] 1:08:07 AM [AWT-EventQueue-1] [debug] EditBus: BufferUpdate[what=LOAD_STARTED,view=org.gjt.sp.jedit.View[active],source=Gdebi-GTK.desktop (~/.desktop/)] 1:08:07 AM [AWT-EventQueue-1] [debug] BufferSet: 515504231 addBufferAt(Gdebi-GTK.desktop (~/.desktop/),-1) 1:08:07 AM [AWT-EventQueue-1] [debug] BufferSet: 515504231: Buffer added Gdebi-GTK.desktop (~/.desktop/) at 16 1:08:08 AM [AWT-EventQueue-1] [debug] EditBus: BufferUpdate[what=CREATED,view=org.gjt.sp.jedit.View[active],source=Gdebi-GTK.desktop (~/.desktop/)] 1:08:08 AM [AWT-EventQueue-1] [debug] EditBus: BufferChanging[what=BUFFER_CHANGING,source=org.gjt.sp.jedit.EditPane[active]] 1:08:08 AM [AWT-EventQueue-1] [debug] EditBus: EditPaneUpdate[what=BUFFER_CHANGED,source=org.gjt.sp.jedit.EditPane[active]] 1:08:08 AM [AWT-EventQueue-1] [debug] EditBus: BufferUpdate[what=LOAD_STARTED,view=org.gjt.sp.jedit.View[active],source=GIMP.desktop (~/.desktop/)] 1:08:08 AM [AWT-EventQueue-1] [debug] BufferSet: 515504231 addBufferAt(GIMP.desktop (~/.desktop/),-1) 1:08:08 AM [AWT-EventQueue-1] [debug] BufferSet: 515504231: Buffer added GIMP.desktop (~/.desktop/) at 17 **Conclusion/Request:** Since the migration to a new Linux and jEdit version something must have changed for the worse. Hopefully its just my setup and not a general issue. Therefore, I politely ask the jEdit developers for help with tracking down the issue and reducing load times to a fraction of the current times. Mathias, how are you starting jEdit? Have you adjusted the heap size and/or memory allocation options? I've done some testing, and opening 400 files at once takes 3 or 4 seconds for me. I'm starting jEdit like this: java -Xmx620m -Xms512m -jar /home/danson/apps/jedit/current/jedit.jar -reuseview -noplugins If I take out the memory settings and just do java -jar /home/danson/apps/jedit/current/jedit.jar -reuseview -noplugins I can still open 400 files, but it takes about twice as long, so maybe 7 or 8 seconds, which is way faster than what you're seeing. The files I'm opening are all .java files ranging in size from 289 bytes to 281k. My system is fairly similar than yours: java -version shows: openjdk version "1.8.0_202" OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_202-b26) OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.202-b26, mixed mode) uname -a shows: Linux deadlock 5.0.1-arch1-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun Mar 10 10:55:53 UTC 2019 x86_64 GNU/Linux I'm also using Xfce and jEdit 5.5. This leads me to suspect something other than jEdit is causing your problem. Does any of the devs have other ideas? Page http://www.jedit.org/index.php?page=compatibility lists several versions of jEdit. Do **jEdit 4.x** and 5.x equally receive security updates, i.e. are they officially supported branches? If so, I could try a **downgrade to v4.x** Page http://www.jedit.org/index.php?page=compatibility also lists Java 5 to 8 for the respective versions. Are there experimental builds in jEdit 5.x and 4.x branch, with Open**JDK 11** (JRE) at this point in time? If so, I could try an **upgrade to v11**. Thanks in advance! --- ** [bugs:#4078] TDO DIR. Hi Randall, The application stub is unable to find the JRE. This has been a problem on Mac for quite some time. I addressed it in a post to the jEdit users mailing list back in September 2014. The fix for me was to replace jEdit’s default application stub with the “Universal Java application stub” found here: https://github.com/tofi86/universalJavaApplicationStub <https://github.com/tofi86/universalJavaApplicationStub> It replaces jEdit’s stub file at “<application_dir>/jedit.app/Contents/MacOS/jedit” and retrieves the info it needs from jEdit’s “Info.plist” file. At that time I had made the following suggestion: "I'd like to propose that the universalJavaApplicationStub be used for jEdit, rather than the existing JavaApplicationStub. I'm no lawyer, but I believe that the terms of the MIT license under which its released should be compatible with jEdit's GPL license. Being a shell script rather than a compiled binary it has a number of advantages including: - human-readable, so it's easier to see how it works and to debug any problems - potential for jEdit-specific customizations, including new properties in the Info.plist file - would allow users with multiple JRE instances installed to select a specific JRE for use with jEdit" There was no reply from the developers and it appears that they’re still using the same binary stub. Good luck, Steve Jakob > On Mar 15, 2019, at 9:04 PM, Randall Stebbins <wmg...@gm...> wrote: > > I can’t find this information anywhere, in spite of two days of web searching. > > There is nothing in the jEdit Help files about performing this crucial task. Yes, as I said "for testing the /home/<username>/.jedit/ directory was backed-up and the erased. After starting jEdit with a fresh ~/.jedit directory and default configuration, the issue was still present when opening multiple files". Also, the plugins are stored in the settings directory, as per the jEdit configuration that I set (/home/USERNAME/.jedit/plugins/). I suspected a plugin, especally Session first as well, but since I use a completely fresh ~/.jEdit directory, I can rule that out, right? --- ** [bugs:#4078] TDO DIR. Have you tried the same but without plugins? I'd suspect one of those. Can you start jEdit with the "-noplugin" option? If so, do you see the same issue? If not, could you add your plugins back in one at a time until you see the problem? I would suspect ProjectViewer and Sessions first, although a couple of others might be considered. --- ** [bugs:#4078] TDO DIR. Specific instructions for installing on a Mac are on the jEdit website, starting on the download page: http://jedit.org/index.php?page=download First, check the requirements on the download page to ensure you have the right version of java installed, then download the appropriate installer. The java installer works on all operating systems, but there is an installer specific to Mac. Below the installer links, the download page has a link to specific instructions for installing on a Mac: http://jedit.org/index.php?page=download&platform=mac#instructions. Please give those a try and reply if you have any other problems. I'm assuming this is about trying to get jEdit installed. Have you tried starting from the java based installer ( http://sourceforge.net/projects/jedit/files/jedit/5.5.0/jedit5.5.0install.jar/download ) I do remember having trouble with this the first time I set up a mac (on Mavericks, and then again later maybe on High Sierra.) But if you successfully start the install.jar, the process should solve itself after that. However, using the java based installer in mac, you might end up with the application in a non-standard location afterward. (My jedit app folder sat for years in my home folder instead of applications, but I never had any issues with it. Maybe it warned me sometimes and I had to reauthorize it..) If you aren't just trying to get Jedit to work for the first time, it might be helpful to state a bit more about your intent, which version of jEdit and java JDK you want to pair up, and what OS (specific version) you're working in. Because the specific answer to your question varies depending on all of these things... I can’t find this information anywhere, in spite of two days of web searching. There is nothing in the jEdit Help files about performing this crucial task. It states that a JDK is needed, but doesn’t tell the user how to associate jEdit with that JDK! Someone needs to update the Help file for installing jEdit. Of course, I can find a zillion things on the web about both jEdit and JDKs - just not how to associate the former with the latter! Plus, nearly everything is about Windows and I am working on an iMac. I thought perhaps a jEdit Project might have a setting where the JDK could be specified. Nope. Maybe there’s a “back door” - some plug-in that would somehow cause jEdit to find the JDK. None that I could find. Tried to launch jEdit in the Terminal using java.exe in the JDK with the jEdit.jar as the target - just got one error after another. “Cannot create Virtual Machine” etc. At the end of my rope. Should I uninstall jEdit and try another editor? |
