Hi Dale, That works! So, in summary, for the benefit of the list and whoever maintains the jedit tutorial documentation, the issues were - jedit version number must be 11 digits as in 04.05.99.00 . Possibly the error message for incorrect version number format could mention this - although http://www.jedit.org/users-guide/plugin-load.html says that jEdit simply "Checks for a class name with a name ending with Plugin.class." it only looks in the root directory apparently unless one adds path qualifications actions.xml and dockables.xml . The path qualifications are not needed in the NAME XML attributes but just in the tag contents I also had problems with the build script but was able to simplify it. Having a true "hello world" (without the package complication that was my own fault) would probably speed learning for newbies. I'll see if I can contribute that. jEdit is great and I'm hoping I'll have something to contribute to the effort. all the best, Adam On 9/26/19 8:34 AM, Dale Anson wrote: > Well, it turns out the fix is not at all obvious. Hi Dale, After making that change, now I get 6:39:38 AM [main] [error] PluginJAR: Invalid jEdit version number: 4.05.99.00 6:39:38 AM [main] [error] ErrorListDialog$ErrorEntry: /home/apease/.jedit/jars/quick.jar: 6:39:38 AM [main] [error] ErrorListDialog$ErrorEntry: Requires jEdit <unknown version: 4.05.99.00> or later, but you only have version 5.5.0. 6:39:38 AM [main] [error] ErrorListDialog$ErrorEntry: Download new jEdit versions from <http://www.jedit.org>. There error message seems odd since 5.5.0 is later than 4.05.99 and that's what I'm running. all the best, Adam On 9/24/19 7:40 PM, Adam Pease wrote: > Hi Dale, > Awesome, I really appreciate the detailed help and will let you and > the list know the outcome. > > all the best, > Adam > > > On 9/24/19 7:33 PM, Dale Anson wrote: >> No, the other way around, so, for example: >> plugin.QuickNotepadPlugin.activate=defer >> should be, in your case, >> plugin.com.articulate.sigma.jedit.QuickNotepadPlugin.activate=defer >> >> I think you need to change all of these: >> >> # jEdit only needs to load the plugin the first time the user accesses it >> # the presence of this property also tells jEdit the plugin is using the >> new API >> plugin.QuickNotepadPlugin.activate=defer >> >> # Even if you don't store additional files, this is a good idea to set: >> plugin.QuickNotepadPlugin.usePluginHome=true >> >> # Required for all plugins: >> plugin.QuickNotepadPlugin.name >> <http://plugin.QuickNotepadPlugin.name>=QuickNotepad >> plugin.QuickNotepadPlugin.author=John Gellene >> >> # version number == jEdit version number >> plugin.QuickNotepadPlugin.version=4.5 >> >> # online help >> plugin.QuickNotepadPlugin.docs=index.html >> >> # we only have one dependency, jEdit 4.5 >> # See jEdit.getBuild() to understand version numbering scheme. >> plugin.QuickNotepadPlugin.depend.0=jedit 4.05.99.00 >> >> # quicknotepad's plugin menu - a list of actions or separators >> plugin.QuickNotepadPlugin.menu=quicknotepad \ >> >> The rest should be okay. Hi Dale, Ah, thanks. Maybe that could be detailed in the tutorial since it doesn't mention that requirement? Also, it's not clear to me which are the package names in that file. There are lines such as plugin.QuickNotepadPlugin.activate=defer options.quicknotepad.code=new QuickNotepadOptionPane(); and quicknotepad.label=QuickNotepad Should I assume that the first examples would be unchanged and that the second becomes com.articulate.sigma.quicknotepad.label=QuickNotepad I'm grateful for your guidance. all the best, Adam On 9/24/19 5:47 PM, Dale Anson wrote: > "All I've done is change the package names and build script." > There's the problem. No, the other way around, so, for example: plugin.QuickNotepadPlugin.activate=defer should be, in your case, plugin.com.articulate.sigma.jedit.QuickNotepadPlugin.activate=defer I think you need to change all of these: # jEdit only needs to load the plugin the first time the user accesses it # the presence of this property also tells jEdit the plugin is using the new API plugin.QuickNotepadPlugin.activate=defer # Even if you don't store additional files, this is a good idea to set: plugin.QuickNotepadPlugin.usePluginHome=true # Required for all plugins: plugin.QuickNotepadPlugin.name=QuickNotepad plugin.QuickNotepadPlugin.author=John Gellene # version number == jEdit version number plugin.QuickNotepadPlugin.version=4.5 # online help plugin.QuickNotepadPlugin.docs=index.html # we only have one dependency, jEdit 4.5 # See jEdit.getBuild() to understand version numbering scheme. plugin.QuickNotepadPlugin.depend.0=jedit 4.05.99.00 # quicknotepad's plugin menu - a list of actions or separators plugin.QuickNotepadPlugin.menu=quicknotepad \ The rest should be okay. I didn't compile or test any of this, just looking at the properties file. Let me know if you need more help, I know I struggled with my first plugin with exactly the same issues you're having. Hello everyone!, I have been working as software developer for many years, but, since las 4 years ago I was trying to learn and put in practice Java. I would like to join the Jedit project and give a hand. I am passionate for Java and would like contribute with you any form. I don't have experience working in online projects but I can start with little things if you don't mind. Best Regards, Fernando |

Hi Eric, So sorry to hear this, you've been a great asset to the project, and sorry I didn't reply sooner, I've been camping in the backwoods of Canada for the past couple of weeks. It really seems interest in the project, at least from a development side, has dropped off considerably in the past few years, so I understand where you're coming from. I've been struggling to find time to help out myself -- being retired now, I do find a bit of time here and there, but there seems to be less and less to do. Maybe that just means that jEdit has matured and is that that stage of life where it just needs a little updating now and then rather than major upgrades and changes. Anyway, keep in touch! Thanks again for all your help, Dale PS I'm pretty sure you've been on the project since at least 2005, so it's at least 14+ years... just saying, in case anyone is counting :) On Wed, Aug 21, 2019 at 12:10 PM Alan Ezust <ala...@gm...> wrote: > Hi Eric, > > Thank you very much for all your assistance over the years.
