A quick note that I "downgraded" my video driver from the latest "experimental" one that was offered and had been installed ( and was supposed to offer new features ) to the previous one and everything has been working perfectly since no matter what I do with down arrows or tooltips. That will teach me to use a video driver which is labeled "experimental" for an old video card <g> ! Again thanks for your patience and sorry for the bother. > >> >> >> On Tue, Oct 25, 2016 at 8:04 AM, Edward Diener >> <eld...@tr... <mailto:eld...@tr...>> >> wrote: >> >> On 10/25/2016 10:08 AM, Dale Anson wrote: >> > If the docking area is collapsed when you click the down arrow, it >> > should show the list of docked items rather than docking options, so >> > that is proper behavior. The look and feel is Metal and the Icon theme is Tango. I tried this on a more modern laptop I have and everything worked OK. So I strongly suspect it is my video adapter and driver on an older machine. At this point, since it is obviously a hardware problem, I can only thank you for the time you have spent responding to this e-mail. I will be building a newer computer and putting this old desktop aside. But you know how it is with any desktop; even if it is old you fall in love with it because you are used to it and its quirks. But as soon as my cursor hovers over the right dock arrow so that the tooltip shows, or if I click on the right dock arrow so that the tooltip shows, JEdit screen drawing subsequently goes berserk and gets completely scrambled in all JEdit windows including menu items. The only way to get out of this is to click the 'x' close button in the upper right hand corner of JEdit; even trying to use File | Exit does not work since all menus go berserk also. If I just click on a right dock tab and expand it, and subsequently contract it I am fine. It's the tooltip coming from the right dock arrow that triggers the mess, whether I am exapnded or not. There is no problem at all with the left dock arrow tooltip. If I move my cursor over the right dock arrow quickly enough and the tooltip never occurs I am also fine. But if I move my cursor slowly enough over the right dock arrow so that the tooltip shows up, then the problem occurs no matter what I do afterward in JEdit. I will try downloading/installing a Java jdk to match the latest version of the jre which I have. Will JEdit automatically pick up this jdk when I next open it ? If not how do I get JEdit to pick it up ? > > I tried to reproduce, but I don't see the problem at all. If the docking area is collapsed when you click the down arrow, it should show the list of docked items rather than docking options, so that is proper behavior. If the docking area is expanded, then clicking the down arrow should show the docking options for the visible item in the docking area. I tried to reproduce, but I don't see the problem at all. I tested on Windows 7 with Oracle java 1.8.0_102, so my java version is a little ahead of yours. I don't have any plugins installed on this machine, so I docked the File Browser on the left and Activity Log on the right. The scrambled screens that I am seeing has nothing to do with sidekick or ctags sidekick. I have finally been able to reproduce the problem at will but I have no idea why it is happening. Let me describe it here, just in case anyone else has seen it and can help me solve the reason why it is happening. First off the problem is occurring in the official 5.3 distribution version of jedit as well as the latest daily build and my own build from source. The problem manifests itself in this sequence: 1) I dock anything on the right. 2) I go to the right dock and I click the down arrow just above the first docked window. Or I just hover over the down arrow above the first docked window for a short time. 3) All mouse movement after that produces scrambled screens all over the place as if nothing in jedit is being drawn properly anymore. I have disabled all plugins when reproducing this. I am running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. This could be a video adapter problem but I have seen nothing like this on any other windows under Windows 7, so this seems doubtful. This could be a Java problem. I am running 1.8.0_91. Java jre has been updated on my computer with later version versions. I am not sure how I get JEdit to pick up those versions. I probably need to install the jdk of a later version to have JEdit pick it up. Other interesting things: 1) The problem does not occur with the left dock. 2) When I hover over the arrow on the left dock it says "Docking Options" but clicking the area does not show docking options but rather a list of the docked windows. 3) When I hover over the arrow on the right dock it also says "Docking Options" but clicking the arrow does not show docking options but rather a list of the docked windows and then everything gets messed up very quickly after that. I realize I can avoid the problem by not docking anything on the right. I have not tried docking above or below to see if this causes any problems also. Any insight or help would be great. I apologize for thinking it had to do with sidekick or ctags sidekick. > > Dale > > > > On Sun, Oct 23, 2016 at 7:02 PM, Edward Diener > <eld...@tr... <mailto:eld...@tr...>> > wrote: > > On 10/23/2016 1:40 PM, Dale Anson wrote: > > After further review, it's probably not the read locks I mentioned. The printing works fine on Windows 10. Alan, do you see any reason not to go ahead and release? Yeah, I'll try to find time in the next few days to dig deeper into this. It's really frustrating when this happens. I think it was 6 or 7 years ago this problem plagued a lot of people. I think part of it is a timing/threading issue, so if you have a fast (or maybe slow) processor, it appears more often. I haven't done any serious C coding in quite a few years now, but I'll dig up some code and see if I can reproduce. Just curious, the ctags sidekick also parses java files, have you tried that and seen the same problem? After further review, it's probably not the read locks I mentioned. That fix was put into the SideKick plugin, so it should apply to all of the sidekick plugins, including ctags. That issue has cropped up before. If I recall, it was due to a plugin not using buffer read and write locks correctly during buffer parsing. I'm not where I can check the code for ctags right now, but have you tried just removing the ctags sidekick? That would be my guess as to where the problem is. I have been using the Sidekick and CTags Sidekick plugins with JEdit 5.3 on Windows. I am using one of the latest 5.3.1 builds to run JEdit as well as a build from source to run JEdit occasionally when I am testing. Recently I ran into problems where the screen was being scrambled and all sorts of portions of the screen were showing up multiple times and in multiple places. Also menu items for some menus were being repeated and JEdit would essentially stop working to the point that I had to exit the application from the x close button in the right hand corner button. While no work was lost something was causing this mess. The scrambled items and screen problems seemed to be coming from clicking on portions of jEdit outside of the current edit window with my mouse. Finally, based on an intuitive guess, I unloaded the Sidekick plugin and the CTags Sidekick plugin and now everything is back to normal. Thankfully I have not seen the problems I was previously seeing at all no matter what I do and where I click in JEdit with my mouse. I am pretty sure either Sidekick or CTags Sidekick was causing these problems, although the how and why of it is beyond me. I am using what the plugin manager is seeing as the latest versions of these plugins, 1.8 for Sidekick and 1.5 for Ctags Sidekick. I liked these plugins but considering the disturbing problems I encountered just trying to use them with the latest versions of JEdit I can do without them and the problems they caused me. But I felt I should report it here in case others have encountered them or in case the problems of using these plugins with the latest JEdit, rather than the latest 5.3 officially released, were already known. |

Awesome, thanks! I want to do a little more testing to see why the page breaks are not showing on the Windows 7 machine I have access to, it seems odd that it doesn't just work. I think I'll have the Windows 10 machine tomorrow to test with. I checked the "Page breaks" and gave it a color, and it successfully showed the page break line in the file I am editing in the color I selected. I then went to print the file, first doing a preview, and it successfully showed that it was using the page breaks to create individual pages to print. Edward, I've checked in a change in revision 24562 that turns on a bunch of log messages and fixed and off by one error that probably caused the printing to not work. I've tested on Windows 7 and do get pages out of my printer. What I don't see is the page break markers. Those are turned on by going to Utilities - Global Options - jEdit - Text Area, then checking "Page breaks". This is working on my Linux laptop, but not on Windows 7 for some reason. I'll try to find time to look into that tomorrow. I'd appreciate it if you could try again on your Windows. I think I have access to a Windows 10 machine, if so, I'll test on that too. Thanks for letting me know. I'll look around and see if I can find a Windows computer. The print dialog comes up and everything looks good. Unfortunately when I try to print nothing comes out. I do get a message from my print driver software "Job sent to the printer" but nothing is printed and when I look in the print queue for my printer there is nothing there. Under normal JEdit 5.3 printing works fine. > > > > On Fri, Oct 7, 2016 at 6:12 PM, Edward Diener > <eld...@tr... <mailto:eld...@tr...>> > wrote: > > On 10/7/2016 3:21 PM, Dale Anson wrote: > > Makarius, any chance you've tested the new printing system? Edward, that would be awesome! Really, just make sure the print dialog displays properly, the settings are usable, and your printer prints the right thing based on those settings. Thanks! Makarius, any chance you've tested the new printing system? I basically gutted the old printing and replaced it with Java 7 compatible printing. It's working well for me on Linux, but it would be nice to get some feedback from Windows and Mac users. Other than that, I think it's looking pretty good also.
