Humans do not want to believe that when they die they die – so they invented elaborate theologies to convince themselves that when they die they don’t die. Since there is no proof that when you die you don’t, the theist insists you must have faith. This faith is held in high esteem and is considered superior to facts, evidence, logic, and reason. When a loved one dies, everyone says that person went to heaven. They say this because they do not want to think that when we die, we are dead, and didn’t matter at all in the big scheme of things. Mom went to heaven is a very comforting thought. Everyone says it because it is emotionally comforting, not because it is true.

Humans do not want to believe their existence is in vain, that they are just another animal which dies. Humans invented the ideas of god and afterlife in a desperate attempt to deny the cruel reality of existence: we live and die, and when we die we are dead. The Christian religion particularly, is big on denial of death. Christians believe we survive death, and they even borrowed the concept of the soul to make that belief work. Anyone can see when you die you are dead, thus the soul was invented as the part of self that survives death, and this soul concept was invented by necessity to make the afterlife belief work. If you don’t have a soul, the part that survives death, then the whole heaven and afterlife thing doesn’t work. Thus the soul is a necessity and was invented – and understand why – because of this need to beat death. The soul is only a literary invention of the priest. If you believe the soul to be real, or heaven, afterlife, sin, judgement, god, etc. then prove it. Not one primary concept holding up this religion can be proven. Not one miracle can be proven. Jesus existence can not be proven. Afterlife can not be proven. Sin, soul, heaven, and hell are not proven.
