Apologies for injecting religion into the discussion, but I feel that it is necessary. The “robber barons” were primarily Protestant. Under Protestant doctrine, anyone who cannot be successful in business is considered to have a moral failing–not unlike the “prosperity gospel” which is preached in Protestant circles to this day.

These Protestant “robber barons” didn’t give a damn about their employees, constantly cutting employees’ wages while amassing profits only for themselves. These Protestant “robber barons” attempted to redeem themselves by establishing “foundations”, building libraries and the like. Of course, this shielded their money from the tax man.

Contrast that with Catholic teachings which requires employers to pay their employees a decent wage. You see, under Protestant doctrine, “good works” have no bearing on salvation whereas Catholic doctrine requires “good works” as a part of achieving salvation.

One exception was Henry Ford, who pretty much created the modern-day middle class. Ford realized that in order to sell his product, he needed a “customer base” who could afford to purchase his product, among other things.

Today’s capitalist “mantra” is that labor costs must be as cheap as possible while the “value” (profit) to the stockholder must be as great as possible. Sacrificing labor on the altar of “maximum profits” NEVER works in the long term.

Presently, labor is looked upon as a “necessary evil” to be minimized at all costs. The problem arises-without labor there are no consumers. As I previously stated, a “balance” must be maintained. Labor is not evil, but a necessary component of capitalism.

Pre-WW2 Germany’s economic successes and the rapid rise of the pre-WW2 German economy was predicated on labor being assigned “value” and monetized-something that is (and has been) missing in capitalist societies today. Germany recovered from the “great depression” much faster than the USA or other countries. In fact, it took WW2 to break the USA out of the “great depression”.

If labor costs need to be trimmed to assure “profit” at the top, something is seriously wrong. In fact, in the well-paid American automobile industry, labor costs account only for approximately 10% of total costs.

Offshoring production results in consumers (customers) being “lost”.
That being said, it is long overdue for a “realignment” and recognition that “those at the top” have a lot to answer for.
