At any rate, blacks across the board generally did much better in their own schools but that was due to a combination of factors.

Whether they did better or not is hard to say, but they couldn’t blame the whites in the school for their deficiencies, could they? And they couldn’t cry racism over discipline. So even if the black schools were substandard, they would be superior to the black majority schools today, because discipline was enforced.

When the integrationists claimed that black schools were inherently inferior, it can only be because they view blacks to be inferior. Being separate can’t be inherently lesser unless the educational potential of the schools are lesser. If they are believed to be lesser, we can say that the real reason, as everyone knows, is the lesser potential of the students.

The clinics became fortresses around the time Oxy became a currency, and pill heads started switching to heroin because it was cheaper. Spending a few days or weeks in those places makes me appreciate my job, and gives me some insight into what those places are like, and the mentality of a person who can work day after day in that type of environment.

Older White friend, a Navy lifer and a great guy, told me that in the ’70s, his carrier group docked at Sasebo, in southern Japan. Crew had a couple days off after being cooped up at sea for months-plenty of young guys who had been deprived of booze and women and with lots of saved up $.

You’re right about Boogie Nights. Anderson made a short film about “Dirk Diggler” before Boogie Nights, starring a non-professional actor. In it, Dirk was born in 1960 or 1961. consistent w/ Boogie Nights’ timeline. So the Marky Mark version was a kid, washed up and making a comeback at 22-23.

The real John Homes in that same period was mid 30s, an Army veteran, etc. As you said, he was a much harder (no pun intended) and sleazier character.

I just like Boogie Nights b/c it’s entertaining. Great soundtrack, too. Vince Gym, speaking of which, is name checked in it.

It was an especially interesting comment by Gironda as Vince trained many famous pro athletes. He also said the best actual pro athlete he trained (as you mentioned, Weathers wasn’t really a pro athlete of any duration), who was also the most coordinated man he ever trained, was OJ Simpson.

Interestingly enough, Robert Blake trained at Vince’s Gym at the same time as OJ.

I also thought that the reissue of Apocalypse Now with the deleted scenes put in was a big improvement to an already very good movie.

Concur that the Redux added welcomed new dimensions to a Masterpiece.

First time I saw Apocalypse Now was on a Double Bill with Patton at a rep moviehouse. I remember being blown away by the mind staggering scenes when Col. Kilgore descended on the VC Hamlet with his AirCav gunships and unleashed hell.

It was also the first time I recall any movie which depicted daily life on a USN Riverine Patrol Boat in that conflict as well as how things kept getting more surreal as they made their way to Kurtz’ private fiefdom.

The Montagnards base camp looked like pictures of Pol Pot’s Killing Fields which gave it an authentic feel.

The ending when the scene of the Water Buffalo being hacked apart by the Kurki wielding Indig juxtaposed with Willard carrying out his “assignment” was brilliant.

Truth be told, a lot of our Soldiers and Marines who were volunteers that fought in the early months following Tonkin hated both AN and Platoon because of their negative portrayal of U.S. troops. My father and his Army pals especially hated Stone’s film because that was their division that was depicted as squabbling, drug abusing, fratricidal war criminals.

To be fair, they had completed their tours and returned home before VN had devolved into an open ended shit sandwich and even though they knew that puff pieces about that war like John Wayne’s Green Berets was pure propaganda they refused to believe things ever got that bad in Vietnam except for a few highly publicized incidences like My Lai.

I eventually met another Vietnam Vet who was a draftee. He was in the thick of that dumpster fire later in the war when morale was spiraling downward, casualties were mounting while at home much of the public had turned against both the war and those who were fighting in it.

That draftee, my friend, was a projectionist at several large theaters and often used a slide projector to show pictures him and other members his unit had taken in Vietnam. It was way worse than anything in the movies.

That said, my friend could never sit through the final 20 minutes in Platoon where the firebase was being under attack by the NVA without his PTSD kicking in.

We later went and caught We Were Soldiers on it’s opening night because he was in the 1st Air Cavalry several years after the Battle of Ia Drang. Gibson’s portrayal of Col. Moore was both motivating and memorable.

My buddy committed suicide some years ago but I often wondered how he would have felt about the deleted ending of the WWS.

Rewinding back to Platoon……….not sure how many casual viewers caught a few glaring technical errors but both Elias and Barnes were carrying knives made by Cold Steel. That company didn’t exist until the early ’80s. Also, during the napalm scene near the end, the silhouette of the plane appeared to be that of an F-16 which didn’t enter service until well into the ’70s. Hell, the prototype didn’t even appear until 1976, IIRC.

But I digress…………….

Weathers had a brief career in the NFL where he played linebacker for the Oakland Raiders before becoming an actor. The guy Stallone boxed in the opening scene in Rocky was Pedro Lovell (Spider Rico in the film) was actually a fringe contender. Ken Norton kayoed Lovell in a televised bout in 5 rounds.

The late great bodybuilding trainer Vince Gironda, AKA the Iron Guru, who helped train many many tv and film stars, said more than once that Carl Weathers was the most all-around athletic guy that he had ever trained.

Very good article/post–I haven’t had time to sit down and add my two cents until now.

The format, with the movie posters is nice in theory but it makes for kind of a disjointed read, as does the run-on listing of each year’s films-s/b one per line. Almost had a tonic-clonic seizure going through 70-some years of that.

Quibbles on that aside, here are my submissions over and above the ones listed:

1950: The Asphalt Jungle.

1957: Witness for the Prosecution. Great movie, and maybe the single greatest collection of talent, acting and otherwise, on one film other than maybe Grand Hotel or Dinner at Eight, IMHO.

1961: Can’t believe that you left out The Hustler–all three male leads and the single female nominated for Oscars, as was the pic (8 nominations total) The Brits gave it their Best Pic award.

1963: Soldier in the Rain.
This Sporting Life.

1966: Alfie. (maybe).

1978: The Boys in Company C. (A better ‘Nam film than Full Metal Jacket, although I love FMJ.)

1979: A nifty little Sherlock Holmes film called Murder by Decree. Maybe not the best film of the year, but still a fine job overall-Christopher Plummer and James Mason as Sherlock and the Doc? Count me in.

1997: This one boggles my mind. No L.A. Confidential? (Best film of the year–maybe of the 1990s).

No Boogie Nights? Hell, I would have included Titanic, if only for the special effects.

2006: The Painted Veil. Stellar cast. Great job.

2007: The Lookout. Nifty little film. Maybe not top film of the year, but a favorite of mine from that period.

To cite the title of a film on the list, there’s the good, the bad, and the ugly.

It’s nice to see Soviet cinema — often neglected on lists like this — gets its due. They produced many quality films, although most of them are still (under)seen, even those that might be of Western interest. For example, they adapted Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1973’s Hopelessly Lost), and Vasily Livanov’s portrayal of Sherlock Holmes was the late Queen Elizabeth’s favorite, so he was made an honorary member of the Order of the British Empire.

It’s also worth mentioning that the debut novel of Silence of the Lambs author Thomas Harris (and first to get a film adaptation), was Black Sunday, about American intelligence cooperating with Mossad to thwart a terrorist attack at the Super Bowl in New Orleans. Before that, he was working as a reporter for the Associated Press in New York City.

America is a commonly used term for the United States, and denying that is sort of like denying the ethnic and racial reality of America that prevailed fifty years ago in the overwhelming majority of the USA. It’s just trolling by scumbags who want to disrupt meaningful conversation.

And yes, it was founded as a nation for white European peoples, as the naturalization act of 1790 and the experience of anybody over 40 years old in this country knows.

The flood of non-whites is recent, and it is a deliberate population replacement scheme, just as in Europe.

Well, here goes nothing…

I grew up in Detroit, and personally witnessed the destruction of a once-great city. There are a number of reasons for Detroit’s decline that have never been explored or discussed.
1. “Blockbusting” by greedy real estate agents. Real estate agents would send out postcards with the following: “A new family is moving into your neighborhood. If you want to sell your house, please call me at xxx-xxxx”. A “new family” was a euphemism for black families, and was used to “encourage” whites to sell their homes.
2. HUD (Housing and Urban Development) speculators and real estate hustlers conspired to “buy up” and raze the best houses on every block, in certain sections of the city. Quite often, “shacks” were left standing while decent housing was purchased by HUD and razed. This was done purposely to depress property values, to make it easier for speculators to purchase properties at “bargain basement” prices.
I realize that items 1 and 2 are at cross purposes, but they were a reality in 1960s Detroit.
3. The 1967 riots did much to push whites out of Detroit. A little-known aspect of the Detroit riots was the application of spray-painted words on the exteriors of jew and black-owned businesses. The words “soul brother” was spray-painted on businesses owned by jews and blacks so that the “angels of death” (actually rioters) would spare them from destruction. Whole business districts around the city were destroyed, never to recover.
4. The election of Coleman Alexander Young, Detroit’s first black mayor, who was overtly racist to Detroit’s white citizens while “getting along just fine” with the “movers and shakers” (big business people) of the day (as long as the campaign contributions kept coming in)….
5. The abolition of the STRESS (Stop The Robberies, Enjoy Safe Streets) program. This anti-criminal program was put in by mayor Young’s predecessor and was quite successful in “cleaning up the streets” of criminals. In this program, police officers would disguise themselves as vulnerable old people and walk through neighborhoods as “decoys”. Predatory criminals would attempt to rob these elderly citizens and quite often, were dispatched to “the great hereafter”. One of Young’s campaign promises was the abolition of the STRESS program as too many of “his people” were being eliminated. Upon the election of Young, the program was disbanded.
These are 5 reasons for this once-great city’s demise.

It’d be much easier to name the universities not involved with DEI discriminatory practices. Even so called “Christian Conservative” colleges engage in the DEI programs to some degree. The thing is, unless a Trump-like candidate is elected again, all these new rules will be completely disregarded and the old guard will go twice as hard to resurrect these departments.

White Europeans and White Americans don’t have the will to do what needs to be done to regain what they built that I can see. They don’t even understand the game or the rules. They just don’t.
