insert-all-my-modules breaks when there are no modules to install. It creates an empty for loop, which sh does not like. |

After digging into this, I found that the busybox mount command is failing when trying to mount the cdrom. It does not like the 'owner' option for the /dev/cdrom entry in /etc/fstab. I removed the option, and now my mindi dvd will boot properly. Has anyone else run across this? It seems like it would be a show stopper. Perhaps busybox has changed for mindi-0.95? Easy to fix. And it is a know problem with SuSE..
ln -s /sbin/mkdosfs /sbin/mkfs.vfat
Although it seems to be a bit strange as I didn't have to do this on
mine. I'll have to take a look.

A SUSE 8.2 how-to in the Mondo doc mentioned using a symlink to add the mkfs.vfat entry solved part of the problem. Then I had to scrap the mindi command I had saved because the perl version and the options are different when you switch back to the original version. In any case, my mindi test CD works now. Again, sorry for the wasted bandwidth. -- Les Hazelton Registered Linux user # 272996 |

I realize that you have covered most popular FS that cover 99 percent of the users. There is one that I didn't see in your list, IBM's OS/2's HPFS. I realize that the use of this OS is very limited, but there are still a number of businesses that do run this as an app server and even still run the desktop version, since it isn't really broken like Windows and not virus prone. The European banking systems really like this OS because of the last two items. Too bad IBM didn't know how to market this wonderful OS to the rest of the world. I still have it sitting on a partion on my old desktop and do find need of it from time to time. I downloaded and installed mindi-0.95-1 and the related mondo-1.75-1. My system runs SUSE 9.0 Pro. When I tried to run mindi to create a test CD I received the error below. I have attached the requested mindi error file. The path looks OK, but the dosfstools package does not appear to contain the mkfs.vfat you are looking for. Farpoint:~ # mindi -l /root/mindi.log -k /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.21-166-default -t /root Fatal error. mkfs.vfat missing from your filesystem - please install your dosfstools RPM or DEB package. This message is for Joshus Oreman, I received this reply from Hugo. Would you be able to submit these changes to cvs?? I'm pretty new to Mondo and cvs for that matter so I'm not sure I would know where to start... I have been struggling, trying to get Mondo 1.75 and Minidi 0.95 to create a bootable dvd for Linux 2.6. Mondoarchive happily creates an iso, which I can burn to the DVD with growisofs. The dvd mounts fine, and I see everything there. When I boot the dvd however, the first boot step succeeds, and I get to the boot: prompt. After I enter a command (i.e. interactive, expert, etc.), the next boot sequence seems to find the linux kernel and starts to boot it. A lot of diagnostics go flying by. I can see that the scsi disks are found. Eventually it halts though, complaining that it can't mount the cdrom, and telling me to use floppies. Unfortunatly, since it is a video monitor, I can't see all of the diagnostics that are produced during the boot sequence. At this point the screen is full of verbiage relating to creating boot floppies, so I don't have info on why the boot failed. There nmay be some previous useful info, but I don't know how to capture it. I did have a working, bootable DVD mondoarchive for a Linux 2.4.23 system, produced on the exact same hardware. This was with the stable versions of Mondo and Mindi. I'd be happy to contribute to the testing and debugging for 2.6, if there is anything I can do. Thanks, Charlie From: Hugo Rabson <hugo@mo...> 2.6 kernel 2004-01-22 20:33 Would all interested users please try Mondo 1.7x and Mindi 0.9x snapshots with their 2.6 kernel-based distros and send relevant feedback to the mailing list? -Hugo |

Hugo, I have a question about a design choice of yours: why do you break the file sets into small pieces (it looks like each *.afio.gz is about 15-20MB)? I am about to use afio for some storage and am wondering if there is a reason I should do the same thing, instead of packing them up into the 50-200MB files they would be otherwise. Enquiring minds want to know. andy -- Andy Davidson ph...@he... If you know what you're doing, you're not learning anything. |

Well, after trying an assortment of things, what I've done is switched to DAR, which doesn't give me the bare metal restore I wanted, but is a lot faster than Mondo, for reasons I partly understand. With the addition of some perl code (Released GPL probably next week), I have the DVD burner process running parallel to the backup process, which speeds things up even more. Boy, it sounded like a good idea, but Mondo doesn't like that: [root@GOOBER SNMP-PP]# /usr/local/sbin/mondoarchive -OVr -gf -s4380m -1 -d dev=0,0,0 -I /home/dradick -S /home/35graid/VIDEO/mondo-temp -T /home/35graid/VIDEO/mondo-temp Initializing... log file = /var/log/mondo-archive.log See /var/log/mondo-archive.log for details of backup run. root is mounted at /dev/hda Checking sanity of your Linux distribution Done. Fatal error... Please don't give a SCSI node. Give a _device_, preferably a /dev entry, for the parameter of the -d flag. mindi: no process killed ---FATALERROR--- Please don't give a SCSI node. Give a _device_, preferably a /dev entry, for the parameter of the -d flag. If you require technical support, please contact the mailing list. But all is not lost, I managed to use Mondo 1.75_cvs to backup to an ISO, and use command-line dvdrecord to burn it to a DVD-R. Mondo does all these things. You might need to change one thing for your point 1 above. The mondo CD boots by default into 'interactive' mode. If you want it to automatically boot to 'nuke' mode (ie. if you boot from this CD your system gets restored, no questions asked) you need to edit /usr/local/share/mindi/isolinux.cfg or /usr/local/share/mindi/syslinux.cfg (Which one is it?) and change the 'default interactive' line to 'default nuke'. DON'T DO THIS! Not unless you are definite that this is what you need. It should be no problem to educate those in charge of the backup CDs to type 'nuke' at the boot prompt... What are you doing, backing up gigs over dial up modem or backing up terabits/googlebits? Any back up strategy is going to require a snap shot of some kind of your data. If it's a slow connection, then off load data onto a seperate backup device (hard drives) then back that up and repeat as needed. Now if your backing up terabites/googlebits, well then you should have enough $ for some additional hardware to handle this kind of back up. Mirrored redunant scsi towers / mirrored servers, backup libraries, etc. It sounds like you need a different bu strategy. Can't what to here more on this. |

I don't know about the cvs version you're working with, but I found that Mondo v.1.75-1 didn't like the "/dev/*" device specification - the old cdrecord method (like "0,1,2") worked.
