I am finally getting back to this problem after travelling and holidays. Our story so far...when trying to do a mondo-restore on a machine with 2 scsi controllers, mondo is swapping the hardware configuration: the mirrored pair that was sda becomes sdb and the RAID 5 array that was sdb becomes sda, leading to the OS being installed on the wrong volume. Conor made some suggestions about why this was happening and offered possible workarounds relating to the module loading, which unfortunately did not work. Then... At 11:21 +0000 11/4/04, Conor Daly wrote: >If all of this fails, a possible method is to do a two-stage clone process. >It goes like this: > >1. Use mondoarchive to make a backup of everything except /dev/sdb (#0) >2. Use mondoarchive to make a backup of /dev/sdb (#1) >3. In the target machine, disconnect the extra scsi controller >4. Nuke from backup #0 >5. Reconnect the extra scsi and boot as normal >6. On the live machine, partition and make filesystems on /dev/sdb >7. Insert backup #1, run 'mondorestore' and choose all files Gave this a try. I skipped the steps related to the sdb backup since I am cloning servers and sdb contains data that will be different on all the machines. After disconnecting the extra controller, I did a mondo-restore. mondo reported that the mount list did not match the installed hardware (sdb was missing so that was to be expected). I removed the /dev/sdb line from the mount list and started the restore which seemed to run ok. Until: I got to the step about editing the mount list and grub.conf file. An editor window was brought up saying it was editing /mnt/RESTORE/etc/fstab but the file was empty. Shouldn't this have the contents of the original file? I hand entered the mount data. I made no changes to the grub.conf file. The mondo-restore.log is attached When I exited mondo, the machine started to boot off the hard drive but then got to: Freeing unused kernel memory: 228k freed Kernel panic: no init found. Try passing init= option to the kernel. The rest of the boot messages up to this point looked normal as did the grub.conf stanza that was used for the boot. Any ideas what may be going on here? Alas, the log is gone, and I'm sure it would have made a terrific bedtime story. Too bad. This, however, is on my only machine at the moment (my laptop - I'm on the road), and I've converted it to Ext2/3 for other reasons (not the least being an advanced kernel - Reiser FS handling has, in the past, sometimes been less than exemplary on a pristine kernel source). When I get back to my workshop at home, I'll run experiments with non-critical systems there - hopefully we'll be able to come up with guidelines all can use.. but please don't expect it soon, as I may not be able to see hearth and home (and dear wife) until June. I'm still using Mondo, by the way - I've found it very reliable from the direct backup and restore aspect, and I love it's small footprint. Cheers, Dave |

I would suggest replication before backups as you have discovered. I love mondo and what it does but am safe ahead of time. If you declare a Kernel for mindi it is out of mondos hands. If your version of Reiser FS is odd then there are problems. ( close to 40 versions ) Please submit your log to the list. Logs help and they are great ways of putting us to sleep every night infront of the monitor. On Tue, 30 Nov 2004 00:17:21 +0700, David A. I've had problems restoring to an altered disk geometry using reiserfs and a 2.6.9 kernel. A LOT of stuff got corrupted, and I had to start over from scratch. Fortunately, I had the important data secured in advance by other means, but the whole shebang (progs, settings, passwords, etc.) had to be rebuilt. I really feel that the fault was actually in the kernel's handling of reiserfs in the new partition, but I think perhaps the documentation should have a little more info on journalling fs relocation - I'd be more than willing to write the docs for peer review if I knew how to do the task itself... |

So maybe that submission to the local newspaper just before the stop request got through - :) OK back to work.......... Q and A time Does Mondo/Mindi rely on Fastservers for hosting or is it a paid account? If we rely on them lets look into other options. I have mirrored the PXE stuff at mirrors.warsawmail.com. This is not Rays work but the previous work. (pipe in here you know who.....) Does anyone need any PXE hardware to test with? (I have a nice supply of NC3121 cards) Anyone else going to Linux World 2005 in Boston? I have two very nice hotel rooms and a Van driving from Indiana to Boston. I have two friends coming and would be happy to further split costs. I have not had any problems with Mondo/Mindi in quite a while. Is there a section of the project that is harder to work with than others? (I stoped using tapes so I don't know what is going on over there.). Hello everyone! For those of you in the U.S I hope you had a pleasant holiday weekend. Just writing to let you all know FastServers has agreed in principle to cease any and all actions against me. Currently my attorney and I are waiting for something in writing. FastServers will not, however reimburse me for my legal fees, which amount to nearly $2,000.00 at this time. :-( I'm in the process of moving over the next two weeks, however, I should have a final update in the next few days. At this point I cannot forsee any "deal breakers" coming up. Once again, thank you all for your help and vigilance. I have done such a backup and restore. I am curious about the controlers and such. I would also like to look at the log. This is one of the selling points of Mondo to me so I find it important. If it is restorting and LILO is just lost that is an easy fix as that happens to me all the time. > Mark.... please translate .... even roughly if you will.....log file > would be nice Hi Andrew, Carlos's problem is he made a backup of a system using 3 SCSI hard disks and now he wants to restore this backup in a machine with 2 IDE hard disks. I think the whole problem is the change form SCSI HD to IDE HD. I explained him in this e-mail in portuguese what I did to successfully restore a backup of this type. But I admit in my test the both machines have only 1 HD each. I don't know what happens when you are diminishing the number of hard disks in the restore process - can mondorescue deal with it? bruno. Oi Carlos,
"hdc=ide-scsi". A linha inteira é assim:
kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.20-8 ro root=LABEL=/ hdc=ide-scsi
GRUB.
muda:
hda = IDE controler 0, Master;
hdb = IDE controler 0, Slave;
hdc = IDE controler 1, Master
hdd = IDE controler 1, Slave
Tomando estes cuidados, funciona perfeitamente.
Espero ter ajudado,

I am seeing the following message when attempting to do a mondo backup
to the local hard drive:
Fatal error... Your CD-ROM drive is mounted. Please unmount it.
The CD-ROM drive is not mounted. The only thing close are remote cdrom
drives shared via samba, but these are smbfs type devices, not iso
cdroms. It should not really matter whether or not the cdrom drive is
mounted when just doing a local hard drive backup.

For the english speaking mondo gurus: -When trying to take a backup from a system with 3 hard drives running RedHat 7.3, and restore to a system with 2 IDE drives, (booting from the first CD-ROM), and modifying the the partition table accordingly, everything is fine until mondo reports that it could not create the Lilo configuration. The logs say that it was unable to modify the files /mnt/RESTORING/etc/fstab, and ..lilo.conf Para Carlos: Esta usando la última versión de Mondo (creo que 2.04, y mindi 1.04)? Did you do a full backup already? Does this boot? Did you burn the '1.iso' and attempt to boot from that? mondorescue.iso and mindi.iso are the same immediatly after a backup but mindi.iso can change if you run mindi by itself. mondorescue.iso should be used where your backups are on an nfs server, a tape, or on a separate hard disk as ISOs. If you're burning the backups to CDR(W), you should boot with the CD burned from '1.iso'. Conor -- Conor Daly, Please avoid sending me Met Eireann, Glasnevin Hill, Word or PowerPoint attachments.
