Subject: ISO9660 loopback mounted filesystems I've got a couple of servers (OEL5.7 and RHEL5.7) that customarily have some read-only filesystems mounted from .iso files through loop-back. /usr/sbin/mindi complains during execution about not being able to find their size, and ends up prompting for use my kernel y/n. Ultimately, what I'd to end up with is for these entries to be preserved in /etc/fstab, yet ignored during the mindi run. I've been poking around in /usr/sbin/mindi, and haven't really managed to come up with a clean, simple way to achieve this. The useless_dev code doesn't seem to apply, as that's inspecting the source mount point. If I modify the ListAllPartitions code, then it doesn't appear that the ISO9660 filesystems are preserved (correct me if I'm wrong.) I have a number of work-arounds, ranging from commenting out the lines in /etc/fstab, to actually unpacking the contents into local r/o lvols. None of these require mondo/mindi mods, but all have some drawbacks in my environment. Am I missing something obvious? Suggestions? Jeff Kalchik Systems Engineering Land O'Lakes |

Personally, as a long time HP-UX administrator (20+ years, all the way back 7.0. Yes, I remember disk sectioning,) I'd recommend sticking with Ignite-UX for HP-UX recoveries. I also have a dual environment, with HP-UX 11.00, 11i, 11iV2 and 11iV3 services along with Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.7+ and RedHat Enterprise Linux 5.7+ servers. The Mondo archives are stored on my Ignite servers in an NFS volume, and can successfully be used during a disaster recovery (tested twice a year for the last 2 years.)
While Mondo works very well for Linux, Ignite-UX works even better IMO for HP-UX.

Subject: [Mondo-devel] vxfs and hpux
Hi,
I know that it may be unlikely, but are there any chances to support HP-UX 11.31 or VXFS with Mondo?
I have an ignite server for (re)installs, but would also be interested in consolidating everything in one place along with our many versions of Linux.
Cheers, S

Looks like all the data was not restored. There are some omitted directories from root, such as /bin, which I had expected to have seen in /mnt/RESTORING, which mean it cannot chroot as there is no /bin/sh to call. Did I miss something out here? Hi Simon, It sits in a loop during grub install ? Alt-F8 allows to switch to a "tail -f mondorestore.log". Alt-F2 (Alt-F3... Alt-F6) allow to switch to a busybox shell. Alt-F1 allows to return to mondorestore screen. The file mondorestore.log could be useful, you can save it to a USB key (or disk) or to a tftp server through tftp command. I tried fiddling with the BIOS, and it wouldn't boot into anything. It kept saying that Windows can't start without reinstalling hal.dll. Optimised Defaults wouldn't work, only failsafe defaults, or whatever. When I have my new setup, I will walk through all those suggestions. Doug. In Mondoarchive, I changed the discs from sda1|2|3 to vda1|2|3, and
mondo added these partitions.
You also have to change /tmp/i-want-my-lvm for now.
Bruno.
Thank-you. LVMs were recognised and restore part completed.
Failed when it tried to install grub. Tried /dev/vda /dev/hda and /dev/sda for good measure. Always the same message.
Minusculy sized screen-shot attached.

Sandro is right, it should be checked too. I get "Legacy USB Support" through "USB Keyboard Function" in the BIOS of one computer (I get also a "USB Mouse Function"). For example, only when I enable "USB Keyboard Function" in that BIOS I can use a "USB Keyboard" at boot, when grub menu is displayed (on a multi-boot computer). Doing a quick test reinstall from a set of ISOs made using this command: # mondoarchive -O -3 -N -p example.com -d /backup/ISO -i (/backup/ISO is an sshfs mounted partition) ** The restoration process ** I booted of ISO image 1. The disc in the archive was /dev/sda with LVM. The target restore server has /dev/vda - It is a KVM managed by virsh The partitioning part of the restore spits out the message: /dev/vda contains no partition layout and formatting fails, so I ran in expert mode and added a default partition to the disc. In Mondoarchive, I changed the discs from sda1|2|3 to vda1|2|3, and mondo added these partitions. However, Mondo is ill when it tries to set-up the LVM partitions. Hi Doug, What kind of keyboard is it? An USB keyboard? You could check the modules (through lsmod, modinfo) on the machine on which that keyboard is connected to find the module(s) used for it, and add that (or these) module(s) to the backup by adding the names in /usr/sbin/mindi (in the USB_MODS list). After I connect an USB keyboard to my computer and I compare lsmod results (before and after), I see that usbhid and hid modules are added in lsmod result; anyway, for me, these two modules are already listed in /usr/sbin/mindi USB_MODS list. A backup I saved as an archive copy will restore successfully. The relevant
part of message.txt reads:
Welcome to Mindi v2.1.1-r2957, a cousin of MondoRescue
Creation date: Mon Apr 16 22:01:22 EST 2012
These disks were generated on the following system:-
dougshost.douglaidlaw.net
Mageia 1
Kernel 2.6.38.8-server-10.mga
on a i686 architecture
I took that as far as seeing the mountlist for editing, but the current one
still behaves as before. I have no idea what has changed in the meantime.
is it feasible to boot from that mindi and tell it to restore from the
current DVD?
I am about to make significant changes to my system, and I will start a new
thread after that, with all these clues in perspective.
Doug.

I tried the -z option and it works well. I am able to log in directly
after restore to a selinux-enabled VM.
Although the restore process finished with errors (see attached
screenshot and archive/restore logs in zipped file), I just rebooted and
everything ran smoothly: the system was restored OK.
Perhaps you would like to check these errors and you might identify
something that would need to be fixed.
I didn't have to edit anything during the restore process (nor I was
asked to).
Note that the whole restore process was done through a web-based virtual
console ("screen") running as a java-applet.
Restore was done on a virtual machine (under a KVM host). The backup was
loaded in a virtual DVD Drive as an ISO image over http (as supported by
the Web-based VM admin application we are using).
The backup was taken using the command:
mondoarchive -O -V -z -i -s 4480m -d /path/of/backup/dir -I / -E
/path/of/backup/ -9
Thanks,
Nick

When selecting "nuke", and entering the "mondo blue screen environment", it gives us x (I think 15 secs) to press Ctrl-Alt-Del to stop the procedure, otherwise to continues on. I would propose at that point to have two normal buttons: "Nuke" (to continue) and "Abort" (to stop the process), without a time counter. This approach gives time to the operator to decide and, if (s)he wants to abort, (s)he can do it with a normal click/enter; Typing Ctrl-Alt-Del can be a challenge in virtual consoles and it is a real problem to not be able to readily break the procedure at that point. Thanks, Nick |

And just a minor update. ahdoul011.cnxlol.com:<jkalc>:(/etc/mindi/deplist.d) $ cat oel5.conf # # LOL: OEL5 dependencies for mindi # # bnx2x support /sbin/firmware_helper /sbin/firmware_helper.static ahdoul011.cnxlol.com:<jkalc>:(/etc/mindi/deplist.d) $ Rerunning mondoarchive with this file in place now allows a UEK based Mondo image to successfully boot, and run a network based recovery. Time to figure out how to force it into the image. Jeff Kalchik Systems Engineering Land O'Lakes |

A further clue: it can't find /tmp/CDROM-LIVES-HERE. I saw a thread where Victor advised to create that file, but I need a keyboard first. Can I put it on the backup CD, somewhere? Doug.
