As for growing up in the 60s I was scared of nuclear war as a child but eventually settled on the idea that it was hoax, nobody was stupid enough to start one. Now I’m not so sure.

It almost happened by accident and came down to one person in East Germany making the decision.

The concern was real just as it is today. In fact there is probably more risk today than in the 80s since the Communists then were mostly just trying to keep their jobs. A government bureaucracy that mostly exists for itself. The Communists by the 1970s didn’t at all believe in Communism. It just existed as an evil empire and the people at the top didn’t want to lose the benefits.
