I have been studying all things Russian for 37 years. Including the language. As a young undergrad, I spent the summer of 1990 in Moscow. I have been back five more times, most recently in May, 2019. Besides the capital, I have visited many other cities in European Russia, to include Petersburg, Pskov, Nizhni Novgorod, Vladimir, Great Rostov, Kaluga and Voronezh. I have spent time in country “backwaters” as well.

The transformation of Russia from the shabbiest place I had ever seen (that includes Peru and Bolivia in the mid-80’s) to what it is today is utterly astounding. Every city I have seen (with the exception of Great Rostov, which surprisingly, was still looking mighty Soviet) is full of new construction. Public parks are beautiful, restaurants (including fast food joints) are clean and busy. Streets are safe after dark, women are well dressed and men hold doors.

I spoke recently to a friend, who after 3 years in the States returned for a month to her hometown of Penza, a provincial city. I asked about her impressions. She told me that she could hardly recognize the place. “That bad, huh?” was my reply as I cannot name a single city which has not become a sh**hole in my OWN country during my lifetime. Well, one of the blank spots in the Holocaust narrative has always been any discussion of just why people were so upset with the Jews.

As it happens, the Soviet Union had occupied a whole band of territory around its Western border in 1939-40: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Eastern Poland, and Moldavia. I don't think it really owed much to past ties to Germany or the penetration of National Socialist ideology. Else Denmark, Belgium, Alsace and Lorraine, etc would have seen outbreaks of vigilante violence and the formation of auxiliary killing units as well. That's not the case; the vigilante violence seems to map almost perfectly with recent Soviet expansion.

If it's true that the average age of truck drivers is around 55, that is ominous for the industry, or for getting enough food to the stores. Obviously something must be done. 60 Minutes had a segment arguing that bot-trucks are safer than those with human drivers, plus they can operate 24/7. The problem is when one wrecks and kills people, which is bound to happen.

It seems that the romance of the road is over for most young people. Those living in cities don't need cars to get around. Many don't even have licenses. Is it even possible to recruit enough qualified young drivers who want to enter such a high stress, lonely occupation? Like many issues, it's complicated. I'll take a stab at that. I'm not Hispanic, but I have a degree in Spanish thus some history. In the broadest sense, "Hispanic" to me at least, is equivalent to "Latino." Spain is probably the historical equal of Great Britain in success of colonizing the Americas and thus dissemingating its culture and genes into those areas (same argument for colonies in other parts of the world, of course.) Yet to put all Spanish-speakers into one category would be as ludicrous as to equate the "Patwah"-speaking black Jamaican with a whitebread New England man, a direct descendant of the Puritans, merely because they spoke a version of English.

Hispanic will often, indeed usually I'd argue, mean that a person in fact has some traceable genetic ancestry to the Iberian Penninsula. Many people whose ancestors have lived in parts of Latin America, especially areas like Argentina, would be genetically indistinguishable from their ancestors in Italy, Germany or other nations. Yet they will typically have a culture solidly based on Spanish law and tradition. Now, the great majority of US Hispanics are what would be called Mestizo (mixed race) in Mexico and other lands. They are some mix of any number of indigenous (e.g. Inca, Maya, Aztec, and many more races) with white Spanish or other European mix, with lesser amounts of Negro, Asian or other races. So no, hispanic is not strictly speaking a race. It's more a cultural identity, even then with much diversity and often little more in common than speaking a bastard dialect of the mother tongue and a love for rice and beans.

Another fact (unless I'm mistaken) is that the "GPS" feature on modern mobile phones does not use the true GPS (satellite based system) at all. Instead it fixes on cellular towers. Obviously this system will only work in areas where there is cell signal. I don't know what the accuracy is, but the authorities are fine with it, since THEY know where you are at any given time.

Briefly stated, the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect works as follows. You open the newspaper to an article on some subject you know well. In Murray’s case, physics. In mine, show business. You read the article and see the journalist has absolutely no understanding of either the facts or the issues. Often, the article is so wrong it actually presents the story backward––reversing cause and effect. I call these the “wet streets cause rain” stories. Paper’s full of them.

In any case, you read with exasperation or amusement the multiple errors in a story-and then turn the page to national or international affairs, and read with renewed interest as if the rest of the newspaper was somehow more accurate about far-off Palestine than it was about the story you just read. You turn the page, and forget what you know.

That is the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect. I’d point out it does not operate in other arenas of life. In ordinary life, if somebody consistently exaggerates or lies to you, you soon discount everything they say. In court, there is the legal doctrine of falsus in uno, falsus in omnibus, which means untruthful in one part, untruthful in all.

But when it comes to the media, we believe against evidence that it is probably worth our time to read other parts of the paper. When, in fact, it almost certainly isn’t. The only possible explanation for our behavior is amnesia.
