Tubi Thursday: Stage Fright (1987)

A whole bunch of big names for fans of Italian Horror united for this Film!

Michele Soavi.
George Eastman.
Joe D'amato.
Simon Boswell.

This is...

A local Theater is finishing up their preparation for a bizarre Stage Musical based on a fictional Character known as the Night Owl.

It's like if Dario Argento made Fame...off-Broadway.
The Plot hinges upon a pair of massive coincidences, so bear with me...

One of the Dancers hurt her ankle, so she sneaks out to a Hospital.
A Mental Hospital, that is.
No, really.

While getting aid, a famous killer escapes and hides out in their car.
Back at the Studio, he kills the friend and sneaks in...
The Director (who puts the DICk in Director) fires the lady, but then keeps her around later.

The Police stake out the building when the body is found, while he locks everyone inside to practice!

The Show must go on...and is now about the real Killer!
Said Killer eventually kills and takes the place of Brett, the guy in the killer's outfit.

Brett is Giovanni Lombardo Radice, by the way, which either means lots to you...or nothing whatsoever.
The killer manages to take out the new Lead Actress under the guise of rehearsal, before being chased off.

He somehow knows the Building better than everyone and picks them off one at a time.
Meanwhile, two Cops sit outside uselessly.

The Cast is whittled down to- and this will shock you- a Final Girl and the Killer.

Can she survive?
Stream it to find out.
A fun, stylish Film that feels both very '80s and very Italian.

From me, that's a compliment btw.

As mentioned, the Plot hinges upon our stupid Leads going to a Mental Hospital for a sprained ankle.  That and the Cast watching him literally kill someone before they go '...wait a second.'

The kills are very creative and the gore is effective without being too over-the-top mostly.

I'd prefer to see it Subbed, but whatever.

It's such a weird, but simple premise and I kind of love it.  Given that this guy would go on to make The Church, I was happy to see how well this turned out.

It's not Soavi's greatest Film, but it is possibly the dawning of the age of...

A very strange and ridiculous Film in all of the right ways.  If you like '80s Italian Horror, check it out.

Rare Flix: Fatal Frames (1996)

A Film about death that was sadly affected by it!

This is Fatal Frames, a 1996 Italian Film that attempts to be a (then) modern day Giallo.  Does it succeed?

The Plot involves a handsome photographer with a dark past who goes to Italy to Direct a Music Video.  It doesn't seem like its Director (Al Festa) was one himself, but IMDB is not always exact.

Two of his 4 Films as a Director do involve Musical Performers, so...maybe.

When a strange set of killings...that turn up no bodies happen upon his arrival, he's obviously a suspect.  How does this relate to other crimes?
Is he guilty?

To find out (and I can't discuss the Film without its bonkers Ending), read on...

In the long, drawn-out Credit Sequence, we see an old guy watching a Snuff Film!

When some kid (his Son...I guess) walks in, he makes the kid watch!
Enough of that now.

In the Present (of either 1993 or 1996), this guy (who I've seen a few times) is hired by his buddy to Direct a Music Video for an Italian Pop Star.

She's actually a real one, which makes me question all reality, since this is Fiction...but also she's using her real name and identity!
Two main things happen in the first Hour or so.

Random women around our Hero are killed in front of him, but then the bodies aren't found.  The Killer only leaves behind video tapes.

Stefania- the Pop Star- sings Songs for her Music Video.
Such lovely filler.
The Cops work the case and even bring in an outside man from the FBI- Donald Pleasence.
This Casting will be important later, so take notes.

He says that similar killings happened recently in the US, including that of our Hero's Wife!

In a weird bit, the Subtitle Track and the English Dub don't agree on key details.

This lady is stated to be a Hooker in the Audio, but the Subtitles say otherwise!
Our Hero is going a little bit crazy, not helped by the fact that he seems to be haunted by a ghost who calls him a murderer.

He thinks the killings might be connected a Painter, so he goes to his barely marked grave and is confronted by...Angus Scrimm?!?

He acts crazy for a minute and that's it.
(They later imply he's a Ghost...or something, by showing his face on a Painting)
So, here's where the Pleasence thing comes in.

He shot his Scenes in 1993 during the bulk of Production.  A funder of the Film suddenly dropped out and it took until 1995 to get the Film back on track.

By that point, Pleasence had died (right after filming Halloween 6).

To write him out, a Voice Double says that he's leaving to work on a case that popped back up.
In case you didn't get it, they literally PLAY THE HALLOWEEN THEME and a Body Double walks away from the Phone.

Note the Poster visible on the left side of the (non-fatal) Frame.
Back in the Plot, our Hero tries to solve the case, using the only clue they have- the Killer's silhouette caught in one video.

Sidenote: The Killer's Silhouette is a great name for a Mystery Film!

Can he go full Blow Out (Google it) and solve the case.
From here to the wrap up is SPOILERS, so skip if you want.
Ready?

He's confronted in the Studio by Stella and then...the previous Italian Victims (which includes Linea Quigley).

Huh?!?
Well, all of the Italian killings were fake- staged by the ladies and the Father of our Hero's dead Wife.

They knew that he was guilty (as they were all related to or dating the victims) and did ALL OF THIS to get him to confess.

I...I can't even be mad at a Plot Twist this ridiculous and silly!
The End.
A Film that is quite literally Style over Substance.

The Film is about a Music Video Director and is also shot with all of the bells and whistles.
It sure helps to distract from how generic the Plot, Setting and Killer are.

A masked killer who taunts Police with voice recordings- how innovative.
All of the Camera Tricks- Zooms, Tilts and Crane Shots- can only do so much.

The Film sure did appear to be cursed too, as the delay meant that Pleasence couldn't finish it.  He wasn't alone, as another Actor- Rossano Brazzi (of Final Justice fame)- died in 1994 during the pause!
Throw in the fact that the 'Inspector' (from The Beyond) died in 1997 and, well, yikes!

Is the Film notable outside of its weird historical notoriety?  Not so much.

I don't regret watching this insane and silly Film, even if it did drag quite a bit to get to 2 hours.
Was this a better send-off for Pleasence than just dying immediately off-screen in Halloween 6?

You decide!
Next up, another Film that I only own digitally (and 100% legally).  Is this infamous 1960s Sci-Fi Film as dumb as promised?  Stay tuned...

Shudder Day: The Found Footage Phenomenon (2021)

 A Genre that I have a real love/hate relationship.

All bad Movies are bad (obviously), but the Found Footage ones always find more ways to be annoying.

Here are all of them I've covered so far (the List will, of course, include this one too).

The Documentary talks about the Origin of the Horror Subgenre, talking about early Films and how they were influenced.

They thankfully credit such Films as Peeping Tom (below) and others that I'd genuinely not heard of.
Throughout the Film, you hear from various Directors and a few people that study Films.

This means that you hear plenty from guys like this before you eventually learn what Film he made.
They obviously spend lots of time talking about The Blair Witch Project.

If you're not familiar with it, this is informative.
They eventually talk about later ones in the Genre- like REC- and how they were made.

If you like this kind of Behind the Scenes talk, it is nice.
If you don't need every Found Footage Film Director to tell you how clever they are, it is less nice.
No disrespect to Andre Ovredal, of course.

Trollhunter rules.
We hear many times from this lady, who is pretty informative.

She has a French Poster for The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh (and no, I didn't need to Google that), so I do like her.

In closing, if you don't know all of the minutia and history of these Films, this is a good watch.
The End.
A pretty enjoyable Documentary, even if it repeats itself a bit.
In fairness, the Film is made up of a couple dozen interviews taken at completely different times.

I guess they couldn't be bothered to cut out the THIRD Director make the same point.

Joking aside, they got a great number of interesting people to talk about their Films, from Ovredal to Ruggero Deodato to Eduardo Sanchez.

More love for Ghostwatch- yes, please!

I love that they cover the History of the Genre (going back to the 1960s) and the realities of the World that inspired it.  Again- a very informative Film.

My final gripe- they gloss over all of the bad Found Footage Films, somehow not mentioning Area 407 (which this picture appears on if you Google it)...

A very enjoyable and fact-filled Documentary.  Just know that it makes the same points a few times too many throughout the runtime.

Tubi Thursday: Beyond the Living Dead aka The Hanging Woman (1973)

Have you ever watched a Film just to make it go away?

Every time I would go onto Tubi, this would pop up and start its random preview clip.

Well, now I've seen it and it's...

A rich guy dies and a big ceremony happens.

Why does one woman lurk in the shadows afterwards?
A woman goes down to the Crypt to take something from the man's body.

A strange person/creature stalks her, however, and she shoots at it unsuccessfully.
That night, a man- Serge Chekov- shows up in Town.

He wanders around for a bit when he hears a noise and then sees the woman from earlier hanging from a tree (hence the alternate Title).

He would turn out to be the new Heir to the dead man's Estate.
He's caught up in the middle of a bunch of family intrigue.

The guy's business partner has a Laboratory in the House and his Daughter is a Maid.
The Daughter is sneaky and into black magic.
The Butler is creepy and violent.
Notably the Film features Paul Naschy as a Gravedigger named Igor.
He was apparently filming another Movie nearby at the time.

He is vague about some evil and threatening, before the Police kill him.
As it turns out, the evil lady and the Scientist were bringing corpses back to life (hence the more regular title).

A big, prolonged scuffle between the Police, Chekov and the Zombies occurs.

The Scientist dies and his body is taken away by his Daughter, but we get the usual 'They don't really win' Ending because '70s.
A pretty good Film, even if the Plot is kind of a weird mess.

So, there's a Scientist and also a wannabe-Witch in the same House.  There's also a murderous Grave Digger.  Could you pick a Plot?

Other than that, it is pretty good.
The Acting is fine.  Mind you, it is all dubbed, so I can only judge so much.

It is mostly a tale of interpersonal Drama with the whole 'killer on the loose' thing and the 'Reviving the dead' Plot kind of lingering in the background.

Our Lead is kind of a jerk.  The Cops aren't much better.

In the End, the Film has a few good moments throughout it, looks nice and lingers more than you'd expect something like this to.
Also who is Bracula?

A decent enough Film, but the dubbing makes it pretty so-so.  The Plot is a bizarre mishmash to boot.

Tubi Thursday: Maya (1989)

There it is- the only other Horror Film by Marcello Avalone.

I'm done after this- yea!

A man in Mexico is scared by a dream of his death.

Five minutes later, he walks to a Temple (after seeing a weird kid) and it actually happens.
Don't get too excited- not much happens for quite a while after this.

An ex-pat is down there and he was working with the guy.
He meets up with his Daughter, but is no help whatsoever.
Eventually, the kid starts showing up again before random kills.

Between those moments, lots of random Scenes.

Want to see a guy's finger get ripped off?
You do?!?
The apparent revival of a Mexican God of Death (possibly the one from V/H/S 85) causes random murders to happen.

This includes a killer truck trunk, an invisible spirit killing a lady in the bathtub and a lady killed by hooks in her earlobes.

That last one would suck, but you'd live.
By the way, this Poster below features that last Scene, but she's apparently topless here?  Huh?!?

Will the sudden revelation that people can slip in and out of reality wake you up for the finish?
To find out, stream it now.
I was expecting something more, but should I have?

In hindsight, I expected too much.  This is just the kind of Film that Avalone made.
If that's your kind of Film, more power to you.

For all his faults, Lucio Fulci's strange Films were almost never boring.  The crazy stuff was enough to keep you alert during the walking dreams that his Films were.

The Film has a few standout moments.  It would make a great Clip Reel.

If only the rest of the Film were interesting.  It all relates to Peter, who's kind of a dick.  You don't relate to him (I hope) and it makes the Film hard to care about.

This would be a harder one to re-cut/edit into a more interesting Film.  I guess don't be so vague about things until the last Act, write nicer/more interesting Characters and focus.

Oh well- at least nobody marketed it like a Sequel to Gods of Egypt...

Like his other Film, this one has a solid bit of potential.  Sadly, it is just unfocused and only gets interesting near the end.

Tubi Thursday: Specters (1987)

Just for fun, let's look at the only two Horror Films Directed by a Director.

First up, a Film that I constantly try to re-spell the Title of...

It is 'Specters' in English, in case you didn't read the Header.

I'm immediately hit by Italian Horror Deja Vu as a bunch of folks- including Donald Pleasance, naturally- dig up some secrets in the Catacombs.

This isn't just the fake Movie from inside Demons, is it?
The Film is an interesting exercise in a start-stop narrative and full of time-wasting.

They spend 5 whole minutes on a Surprise, It's Actually a Movie They're Shooting bit.
My joke about Demons seems more apt now, eh?
While they're working there, a group of 'teenagers' go on a Tour.  The Horny Guy and Gullible Girl break away from the group- led by a Blind guy- to make out.

It goes horribly awry as wind and rocks fly...but they don't actually die and never factor into the Plot again.
This kind of happens alot here.  That and the woman having dreams of Copywritten Universal Monsters (and Nosferatu, in shadow).

Skipping way ahead, they keep working and investigating before a mostly-off-screen monster kills this lady and a few others.
On the plus side, the tunnels look neat.  I'm getting real Alien vibes and I'm not just saying that to trigger any algoritihm.

Why not just make the Film set down here?
Her dreams and reality eventually come together as she's sucked down to the Catacombs for the big finale.

Will the creature finally show its face?
Will you be awake still?

To find out, stream it now.
A Film that has good moments...spread out over 90 minutes.  It just wastes so much time.

So much walking.  So much staring.  Again- 5 minutes wasted on the fake-out!

The Story had promise.  It wasn't that original- even in 1987- but it could have been good.

Easy pitch- they take some artifacts from the Tomb.  While most of them are down there (with Pleasance and someone else topside), all hell breaks loose.

Now they are trapped and exploring AND trying to escape the Monster.
It's better than what we get, which includes a prolonged Scene of a Waiter being scared, running away and then dying for no good reason.

Good people were at least partly involved here.  Dardano Sacchetti is one of the Writers!  Pleasance was better off being killed by an evil Violin!

Sadly, the Film is overshadowed by stuff like Demons.  Hell, it is overshadowed by Demons III: The Ogre.

Now about that Creature from The Black Lagoon Remake in the news now....

A Film that should have at least been a crazy, breezy Horror Film.  It's like picking apart a tiny chicken wing for 3 scraps of dark meat though.
