We could really use that in Linux -- and this is getting to be a pretty big market. So far none of the graphics manufacturers (to my knowledge) have developed either open or closed tv capture drivers for Linux. That means the GATOS drivers are an important sales factor for ATI cards. When contacting them, we should point out that lots of people want to build PVRs using Linux, and they won't buy ATI cards unless there's a driver. Dave |

In the case of microcode we have a way of locating similar file within ATI drivers, this is the best we can do right now. There should be a way to extract this file from ATI Windows installer directly under Linux, I expect the installer has some sort of ZIP or LZH archive inside. > How the X.org persons communicate > with ATI in order to get documentation for the next > processors? You ask them nicely, just like I do :) Also, the 2d core has not changed much over the years, so often the existing code needs little modifications. If, on the other hand, there is nothing to refer to and ATI is not responding you are stuck. This has been the case with 3d acceleration until Precision Insight people persuaded ATI to provide the specs. The way I heard it there was much, much hard work from Precision Insight just to get the register specs (and note that back then ATI cards 3d performance was not the best) I would expect this to be even more problematic with chips that have analog circuitry inside, as simple bit-banging will not yield optimal values easily. best Vladimir Dergachev |

Try doing:
export LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose
glxinfo
This should print some extra messages telling you what failed.
Most likely there is some sort of device or permission problem.

I installed CVS X.Org and after a brief test everything seems to be OK, actually the above comments apply; TV-in works, video capture doesn't. The only downside is that 3D acceleration isn't enabled. Xorg.log does say that direct rendering is enabled when initializing the server, but when I run glxinfo it returns "direct rendering: No". This can be ofcourse be some kind of misconfiguration at my end, as I said I only tested very briefly. Direct rendering did work before when I had X.Org installed in a 32-bit box. (And it has ofcourse never worked with XFree on 2.6.x kernels, neither on 32 bit nor 64 bit machines) My card in Radeon 7500 AIW. -- Antti Ajanki |

Hi, - I could find a patch on the list but that one was only partial. - I tried the new Imakefile which still left me with compilation problems. Attached you will find a patch that can be applied to ati.4.4.0 from CVS. This will adjust the Imakefile and solve the compilation problems. Works like a charm for my r128. The patch does some renaming of structures (mostly drmContext to drm_context_t, drmHandle to drm_handle_t). Hope that helps, Bram Verweij On Thu, 24 Feb 2005, Marc Michalewicz wrote: > Hi, > > the compilation of the r200_branch aborts with following error compiling r128_accel.c: > > " > In file included from /usr/src/packages/SOURCES/build/programs/Xserver/GL/dri/xf86dri.h:43, > from /usr/src/packages/SOURCES/build/programs/Xserver/GL/dri/dri.h:40, > from r128.h:60, > from r128_accel.c:83: > /usr/src/packages/SOURCES/build/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/os-support/xf86drm.h:39:17: drm.h: Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden > " > > So apparently drm.h is missing - do I have to install some other package to get this away ? > > Thanks in advance, > > Marc > > > > ------------------------------------------------------- > SF email is sponsored by - The IT Product Guide > Read honest & candid reviews on hundreds of IT Products from real users. > Discover which products truly live up to the hype. Hi Antti,
Could you try X.org from CVS ? Since you are using ati.2 I assume you
have an older Radeon card, so it would be useful to know whether I screwed
up anything when doing the merge.
thank you !

One question, though: what Theatre chip is on the AiW 9000 pro? Does TV-Out work with current X.org and its radeon driver? I am somewhat against going with the fglrx driver (same with fiddling with ati.2). HS |

Hi, after getting avview to work now I get greedy and want km to work as well, but as aready described in the thread "km module not being probed => no /dev/video" (I included the "patch" as published there), upon loading km_drv and starting avview, a system freeze (kernel oops, see below) respectively a segfault happens. - AIW 9000 pro, - kernel 2.6.8, - current cvs- r200_branch, - Xorg 6.8.2 Is there any other solution to the "no /dev/video"-problem apart from this "patch" I used ? Hi all,
I had some spare time to look at the mailing list archive and wanted
to comment on the current GATOS status, what things are and why they are
that way.
First of all what works:
* Radeon support for Rage Theatre (plain one) TV-in has been
merged into X.org CVS.
* I had made some patches with similar Rage 128 support, however
there is a major bug - they lockup when DRI is enabled. I have
not had time to work on this since
* Bogdan Diaconescu has made much progress with Rage Theatre 200
support that in r200_branch branch of ati.4.4.0 module in
GATOS CVS. Unfortunately this code is still against X.org
6.7.0, which is an impedement to people who want to test it,
though is likely a smart decision - there were lots of issues
with Rage Theatre 200 chip itself to be worrying about upgrade
bugs.
Note that while ATI has still not responded to the question of
which license applies to the large microcode file needed for
RT200, a similar file is being distributed as part of ATI
Windows driver which should be easy to use.
The last issues that I was aware of for this driver was audio
support. AFAIK (Bogdan please correct me !) this has been
solved, at least partially.
* TV-out support has been written by Federico Ulivi a while back
for Rage Theatre chips (AFAIK). I think Federico is busy now.
* km is being worked on by Antti Ajanki. The code he started with
was at best experimental - I used it to work out how to do DMA
with ATI cards in a stable manner (it was not trivial, despite
having register reference).
Antti has fixed several bugs, apparently more remain.
Also, being a kernel module km is sensitive to kernel
revisions, so it is recommend you use it with some of the stock
kernels from www.kernel.org.
As always patches *are* welcome !
* Avview has also been worked on by Antti, I see there were a few
fixes, especially for 64-bit archs.
* ati_remote has been long merged into linux kernel and LIRC
(AFAIK there are separate drivers..)
And a few more general comments:
* if you are looking for have fun with interesting hardware, GATOS
code is a good place to start. TV-in and TV-out requires
understanding of low-level aspects of both digital and analog
hardware and there is much to experiment with. Have fun !
* Much of the unsatisfaction with the current state of GATOS
is due to overdue Rage Theatre 200 support. This is mostly (totally ?)
the fault of ATI, or, perhaps, the faults of communication
channels with ATI.
The one and sure way to get your hardware supported by Open Source
driver is to publish documentation. Barring that to provide access
to documentation for sufficient number of interested developers.
More than a year has passed since the release of RT200 before ATI
provided documentation - by which time I became very busy. When
Bogdan expressed desire to work on RT200 code it took a while to
get him "cleared" for access to documentation.
We are still waiting for response on whether we can bundle
microcode with current drivers (this question was asked last
autumn)
I have not asked about Rage Theatre 550...
ATI is not unsupportive - we would not have Open Source drivers
for both 2d and 3d (and TV-in) if they did not provide us with
documentation and sample code.
But, recently, it takes them "forever" to decide what to answer
to a request.
* There have been questions of what card to buy. There are many
factors to consider, in particular:
o the major advantage of AIW-style cards (versus capture adaptors
like bt848) is that the data only travels from video card to
the system RAM once. This was particularly important as PCI
and memory busses on older systems could be overloaded with
data being passed back and force for display, compression,
capture, etc.
Note that even sporadic overloads (say listing a large
directory) might result in drop outs.
Newer, high-end cards and systems are plenty fast for that.
Also, none of Rage Theatres (AFAIK) support HDTV, which
involves much higher data throughput.
So for a modern system you would have to buy a standalone HDTV
card anyway. Which renders any concerns about bandwidth
consumption by analog NTSC capture mostly irrelevant.
o the major disadvantage of AIW cards is that they are not easily
factorizable as separate capture and display devices. Which
demands that programs like MythTV would need special handling
to play nicely with Xv overlays and capture devices. This have
not happened yet and I am not aware of anyone working on these
issues.
o another disadvantage is that multimedia connectors often take
up space on the card's bracket. For example I am not aware of
any AIW cards with dual DVI ports.
Therefore, if you are looking for a high-end ATI card, I would
suggest getting dual-port version. If you need 3d now get one of
R200 derivatives. If you want to tinker with 3d you can get a newer
R300/R400 derivative and try drivers from http://r300.sf.net/
For TV-in I would recommend a standalone HDTV and/or TV-in card.
If you are not looking for a high-end card, but rather something
less expensive and stable, I would suggest an older AIW Radeon 7500
card - the one with plain Rage Theatre and FI1236 tuner (big metal
box), not the small square one that some AIW 8500 variants used.
Take care - variants not produced by ATI might employ different
chips.
If you are looking for some close-to-working code to tinker with
get a card with Rage Theatre 200.
This is just my 5-min opinion, the reality might vary a bit.
* I guess I should remark on my involvement with the project:
I am busy with my studies and my research and (occasionally)
helping with http://r300.sf.net .
Last time I had a sizable chunk of time to work on GATOS
was during December, when I made the long-promised merge of Radeon
TV-in code into X.org. As mentioned above the Rage 128 merge
is incomplete due to unresolved DRI stability issues - I am not
certain TV-in + DRI has ever worked.
I am very thankful to all the people that took over various
components - this code has gotten too big for one person to
handle a good while ago.

Gatos is really, really broken and currently of absolutely no use: Loading the km module with linux-2.6.10 and then starting XFree86-4.3.0, the system completely locks up. Loading it after X started, it does nothing. The SF.net frontend is not really suitable for searching patches (actually, it sucks pretty much :-( ). HS |

Brett: Personally, I gave up on Gatos about a year ago, about the time FC2 was release. Xorg support was just not there for a long time, and may still not be available in binary format. I decided during this period to NEVER buy an ATI AIW card again. In fact I pulled my AIW adapter out of my machine and bought a generic 9600PRO card and an Asus TV card. I will continue to buy an ATI video adapter but without the TV IN support. There are several TV cards available for less than $50 that are well supported on Linux and V4L compatible. It is encourgaging to see that ATI has taken the ball and is at least developing current video drivers for Xorg and Linux. I have 3D working on both FC3 and Ubuntu with ATI's drivers. Hi there, tried really hard to find the problem I hav in the list without success, So hopefully someone else reading this here knows about: After doing the xmkmf <XORG-6.8.2-BUILD-DIR> in the ati.4.4.0 directory and starting make, compiling stops during building r128_accel.c, with following error: " In file included from /usr/src/packages/SOURCES/build/programs/Xserver/GL/dri/xf86dri.h:43, from /usr/src/packages/SOURCES/build/programs/Xserver/GL/dri/dri.h:40, from r128.h:60, from r128_accel.c:83: /usr/src/packages/SOURCES/build/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/os-support/xf86drm.h:39:17: drm.h: Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden In file included from /usr/src/packages/SOURCES/build/programs/Xserver/GL/dri/xf86dri.h:43, from /usr/src/packages/SOURCES/build/programs/Xserver/GL/dri/dri.h:40, from r128.h:60, from r128_accel.c:83: /usr/src/packages/SOURCES/build/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/os-support/xf86drm.h:222: error: parse error before "drm_context_t " ... (lots of errors follow) Apparently, something is missing on my SuSE 9.2-system, but what ? I searched for the missing "drm.h" and found files with this name at several places, (/usr/src/packages/SOURCES/build is the X-Server build-shadowdirectory): " /usr/src/kernel-modules/drm/drm.h /usr/src/kernel-modules/fglrx/drm.h /usr/src/packages/SOURCES/xc/extras/drm/shared/drm.h /usr/src/packages/SOURCES/build/lib/GL/dri/drm/drm.h /usr/src/packages/SOURCES/build/extras/drm/shared/drm.h /usr/src/linux-2.6.8-24/include/config/drm.h /usr/src/linux-2.6.8-24.11/drivers/char/drm/drm.h /usr/src/linux-2.6.8-24.11/include/config/drm.h /usr/X11R6/lib/Server/include/drm.h " What is wrong with my settings ? It cannot be so bad, the x-server build was quite seamless. Thanks a lot for any help - it is really appreciated, Marc |

Hi,
the compilation of the r200_branch aborts with following error compiling r128_accel.c:
"
In file included from /usr/src/packages/SOURCES/build/programs/Xserver/GL/dri/xf86dri.h:43,
from /usr/src/packages/SOURCES/build/programs/Xserver/GL/dri/dri.h:40,
from r128.h:60,
from r128_accel.c:83:
/usr/src/packages/SOURCES/build/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/os-support/xf86drm.h:39:17: drm.h: Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden
"
So apparently drm.h is missing - do I have to install some other package to get this away ?
Thanks in advance,
Marc
