I did exactly that and it works great! I can now record both video and
audio from all three inputs (cable, S-video, composite) while watching the
output on my TV. Fixing ati.2 was actually easier than I thought it would
be -- I only had to copy the body of one function in radeon_driver.c from
the devel branch to the main branch (the only one that changed
significantly), then comment out the line in radeon_video.c that explicitly=
disables the TV-OUT. Can I get this incorporated into the main branch so
it'll be in future versions? I can send a diff if you'd like but it'd
probably be just as easy for someone with CVS commit access to cut'n'paste
like I did. Please let me know -- either way is fine with me.
I have another question and I can't find an answer in the archives -- is it=
possible to start, configure and command AVview from the command line?
Specifically, I would like to be able use crond to schedule unattended
recordings. I read a few posts about running ffmpeg from the command line,=
but that seems to require that AVview is already running and is tuned to th=
e
correct channel. On my machine, X will always be running but not
necessarily AVview and it certainly won't be on the right channel. Any
thoughts? I don't know Tcl/Tk but if someone could loan me a clue within
the AVview source I may be able to add command-line parsing myself.
Lastly, my TV and video console are still very strange when I exit X. Is
there a simple explanation for that? As I said before I don't plan to exit=
X except to reboot but if there's an easy way to fix it I'd rather see it
normal. :)
Thanks in advance!

You can make a diff between current devel branch and when it was created
and apply it to the main branch. You'll need to cleanup a little - mostly
rejects from early attempts to support 8500DV that are in the devel
branch.
To get TV-out (via BIOS) working you need only two pieces: the chunk of
code in radeon_driver.c that switches BIOS and the few statements in
radeon_video.c that reinitialize Rage Theatre regs that are clobbered
during regular TV-in initialization (as it is assumes that TV-out is off).
The first should work with 8500 as well, however the second does not.

I was hoping that something similar to DXR3 project could be done. They have the SP/DIF- output working on DXR3/Hollywood cards but I don't know any details. Maybe they had a good luck with the chipset and the specifications were available. SPDIF is only for audio output - used during playback of DVDs.
There are some register locations, but I am not certain whether this is
enough - I am not that familiar with audio drivers.
I would expect, however, that a resonable efficiency in transferring
audio data requires DMA or AGP support.

Hello list, Maybe a bit off-topic but do anyone have any information about the SP/DIF output of the AIW (7500) cards. I would be very interested to use it to pass through the AC-3 stream (or stereo). As this kind of information should not suffer any macrovision issues the specifications might be available. Then something completely different: I know this is related to the tv-out, which is not actively developed but anyhow, is there "theater mode" equivalent in gatos drivers. Thanks for the "making ATI work in XFree86" effort. -- Petri Rehtonen There's never time to do it right, but always time to do it twice |

It looks like it is missing a drm library.
How did you generate XF86Config ? Is it loading dri support ?
Try using one produced by XFree86 -configure

Did you try using ChipId statement in XF86Config ?

I'm trying to get the flight simulator Flightgear working with a MDK 9.0 distro and an ATI ALL IN WONDER PRO 128 card. All modules agpgart, drm, r128 are loaded by the kernel (I have added them in the modules file ) but DRI fails to initiate. I get in XFree86.0.log the massages: DRI disabled drmFreebufs unresoved symbol in r128_drv.o drmR128TextureBlits unresoved symbol in r128_drv.o In the distro the r128 drivers seems to be at quite the last ati.2 level. What is the driver either missing or at the wrong level ? Are there some special options to add/tweak in the XFree conf file ? As I had to choose the AIW at linux install time instead of the generic r128, I suspect also all ATI support is not well installed, even if all drivers are in the right places. The special buttons (I.e. play and record) are not tied to anything by
default - to read these you need to put console into raw mode.
Be sure to return it to translate before exiting your application. (Or/and
enable Magic SysRq keys in your kernel compile).

Mplayer expects a bt8x8 card which AIW is not.
I suggest you use AVview for TV viewing and recording.

So after a few false starts (and a download/compile of the standard kernel.org kernel) I was finally able to get the km modules to properly compile and load. I was also able to compile and run avview (although the volume could not be controlled through the app - I needed to modify the settings in the mixer). After getting all this to work I then tried to get MPlayer to run and received the following error: Playing TV channel 4 Detected TV! ;-) Selected driver: v4l name: Video 4 Linux input author: Alex Beregszaszi <al...@na...> comment: under development Selected device: Km Capabilites: capture Device type: 1 Supported sizes: 640x240 => 640x240 Inputs: 1 ioctl get channel failed: Invalid argument ioctl get mbuf failed: Invalid argument Exiting... (Exit) Has anyone seen or experienced this error? Is this expected? Is this an MPlayer bug? I am using an AIW PCI 128 card with the km and ati.2 modules. Hello, yes, I know I'm cross-posting between 2 semirelated projects; but I am experiencing the exact same problem with both drivers. For dri, I use binary snapshots from 20 september; for gatos I use=20 the "advanced" setup. I can use xv with gatos but it takes a lot of cpu = time=20 (about 50 percent watching a 720 by so-many divX movie on an athlon 800);= =20 dri doesn't give any opengl acceleration.=20 The reason is that both the kernel modules included in these drivers will= =20 absolutely give no problems if I try "modprobe radeon" but when doing 'ls= mod"=20 the radeon driver isn't listed.=20 This is most likely a problem with my kernel configuration, but to the be= st of=20 my will I can not find what. Kernel config is in attachment as well as lo= gs=20 from X starting up (using the gatos drivers; for dri I get about te same=20 error, dri screeninit failed that is); both of which is caused by the ker= nel=20 module failing to load).=20 system info:=20 debian, mostly stuff from testing and unstable ati radeon 8500 retail kernel 2.4.19=20 xfree86 v. 4.2.0-0pre1v1 (from sid) So if anyone has an idea of what generally prevents video drivers from=20 inserting properly, give a mail ;) . I can't try with a "distribution" ke= rnel=20 because I need features from my selfcompiled thing to get the system star= ted=20 (eg lvm).=20 Frank |

Not yet. There is much work to be done and, also, 2.6 is not close to
feature freeze yet.

30% up ?? Which driver are you using ?

You can't. AVview is not using an external ffmpeg command, rather it links
with ffmpeg library as this way it can provide its own read/write
framework. (And display nice things like audio progress bars or make
snapshots during recording).

i've got fairly good success thus far recording video with the km kernel module\avview. i think there's a slight audio out of sync, but i'll have to play around a little. the picture is very clear, and the audio is as well. i have a gentoo 1.4 system with an ati aiw 128 pro card. is there an ebuild for avview/km somewhere? any plans on getting km into the next kernel release (2.6/3.0)? one issue i noticed is that avview doesnt start with sound on. i have to bring up the on screen volume bar, and adjust it up (it's already about 30%, so i don't know why there's no sound), then it comes on. i only have to move it a little for it to get audio. another thing that would be really nice (forgive me if i've missed this somewhere) would be to be able to see the ffmpeg command that's used for recording (if any). i would like to be able to script the recording, but ffmpeg and its many many options are quite overwhelming. if i could see what avview is using when i get a good record, that would be MOST helpfull. |

Thanks -- Got it working! I'm using port 2, BTW. The *Crystal option was not needed, but the *CompsitePort option was not correctly detected -- setting it to "2" fixed the problem. Two other things I notice... If I try and freely resize the output avview video window, the *window* switches to an odd fixed aspect ratio (looks like about 1:2) -- i.e., resizing it will keep that same ratio. The picture inside remains 4:3, but is centered vertically in the window. Any way to get around this? This isn't a big deal, as I can "size->double" and "size->half" the window with no problems... Also -- I notice If I try and select "Size->Unconstrained Aspect Ratio". -------------------------------------------------------------------------- can't set "aspect_ratio": syntax error in expression "(NONE*1280*1.0)/433" while executing ".video_menu.size_menu invoke active" ("uplevel" body line 1) invoked from within "uplevel #0 [list $w invoke active]" (procedure "tkMenuInvoke" line 47) invoked from within "tkMenuInvoke .video_menu.size_menu 1 " (command bound to event) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- BTW, Good luck in the further development of the Gatos project. I'm very impressed with what you all have done so far! /db |

If you do have a video-in port (and not only a video-out port) try checking rage theatre input using instructions at the very end of http://gatos.sf.net/ati.2.php best Vladimir Dergachev On Sun, 27 Oct 2002, David Britton wrote: > This should be a simple thing to find out, but I haven't been able to. > I see a lot of refrences about Video Input not working on the 64MB > Radeon becuase they dont have a tuner or a video in.
