Hope this isn't top posted, if it is, sorry comcast's webmail then is something less desireable. RTFM @ http://gatos.sourceforge.net/supported_cards.php. I could be wrong though. :) Haven't checked to see what chipset is used and all that but since I didn't do the research before getting the card I'm stuck using XP. Should have used my first instinct; that was to go to an nVidia card then get something from Hauppauge for my TV viewing pleasure and use *nix as my OS of choice. > All, > > I have an All In Wonder 9800 Pro, and I'm having a problem that was > brought up in this list before- KM doesn't load with the "init_module: > Operation not permitted" message. That just what I'd like to do. I'm having a tough time figuring out exactly how to get these drivers to work. Could you give a detailed description of how you did this? Exact commands would be really useful. sean _________________________________________________________________ What are the 5 hot job markets for 2004? Well, I'm still trying. I've found that you need to build the XFree86 tree,
not just point to the source. A number of includes ( for instance date.def
and version.def in config/cf are only created during the build). You'll see
they don't exist in the tarball.
So I built it. Then I did:
xmkmf /usr/src/redhat/BUILD/XFree86-4.3.0/xc/
imake -I/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/XFree86-4.3.0/xc//config/cf
-DTOPDIR=/usr/src/redh at/BUILD/XFree86-4.3.0/xc/ -DCURDIR=.
[root@amd3000 ati.2]# make
..............
which worked pretty well until:
rm -f radeon_probe.o
gcc -m32 -march=athlon-xp -m3dnow -msse -mmmx -mfpmath=sse -Os
-fno-strict-alia sing -pipe -ansi -pedantic -Wall -Wpointer-arith -Wundef

You're a better man than I. I'll just use the 2.4 kernel.

Use ffmpeg-0.4.8 to compile avview. FFmpeg CVS changes very rapidly..

For what it's worth, my Radeon VE QY does Xinerama with the standard=20 (non-gatos) radeon driver, on two monitors. All, I have an All In Wonder 9800 Pro, and I'm having a problem that was brought up in this list before- KM doesn't load with the "init_module: Operation not permitted" message. The videodev module loads fine. I read here that there was a possibility that the newer chips were undocumented and therefore not supported by Gatos- is that true for me? Or do If need to do some more RTFM (though I think I followed everything very carefully), let me know as your efforts are appreciated and I don't want to be a bother. Thanks, Daniel |

Hi Paul, yes, I know that tv output module is not working correctly with regard to Clone* options. I'm planning to fix it soon. For the time being, consider that the output module is doing a sort of clone mode of its own: because of this no Clone* option should be given or things will mess up (as you observed). HTH. OK I just thought you should know, its not a big deal for me (once I figured out I had to back off that version for the second monitor to work). I have a setup now where I can switch back and forth with a minimal amount of hacking. BTW, just as an aside, do you know if the clone mode stuff can be used for xinerama type stuff? if not is there a way to make ATI dual output cards do xinerama? As someone else posted here it would be awesome to have the tv as a second display in xinerama. Thanks! This sounds like it would be genuinely useful, if application authors
could be persuaded to use the new interface.

I won't try :-) My objection isn't about resources. An idle X server
isn't that expensive. It just seems archtecturally unclean.

This is a bit outdated - you simply need source for XFree86 4.3.0.

There are headers that are only needed to compile XFree86 but that are not
needed for client programs (like xterm). These headers are not installed
in /usr/X11, but are needed for compiling drivers like ati.2.
So you have to point it to the source tree. In my case the path is
/nfs/node2-storage/xf86/XFree86-2/xc - it usually ends in xc as xc is
what you get when you unpack the sources or checkout from CVS. (module
name is xc).

Actually, for now, there is no version of km for 2.6.x at all.
You could instruct kernel to load km automatically, but I would advise
against it for now, or you might get a chance to feel firsthand what it is
like to fix Spirit (MER-A - mars rover).
If something goes wrong (say you got a stray DRM module) kernel will
load km during boot and lock up hard - all before you get a chance to
do anything with your keyboard.
Of course, here you can always put in boot CD and reboot..
The way I wiggle out of it is that I put km on a remotely mounted NFS
partition and load it from there. If things go wrong all I have to do is
pull ethernet cable, reboot, replug the cable and fix the things manually.

Well, I don't know what "broken PAL" is.
If you have a signal that was corrupted somehow that you basically have
two options:
1. Reprogram the video decoder (chip that converts analog signal into
YUV frames) to compensate for the corruption or make it less
sensitive to it.
2. Make a hardware gadget that filters the signal ("normalizes" it) so
it looks like a regular signal to the video decoder.
You are unlikely to get good results from processing YUV data alone as,
for once, it is optimized for bandwidth - there is just enough to
represent the video stream faithfully (more or less) - so when you try
to reprocess it you cannot reconstruct the actual signal that arrived at
the decoder.
The other reason is that video decoder is a non-linear device, which is
supposed to produce good results with a clean signal - and which produces
unpredictable results with a corrupted one.

It manages the video RAM and programs=20 the card's tuner and other video-related features (overlay,=20 scaling, etc.) DRM deals with the 3D parts of the card, texture=20 uploading, vertex processing, etc. Since ati.2 differs from the=20 standard ati driver in the way it sets up the card's video memory=20 (it needs room for video buffers and things), using the standard=20 DRM is going to crash the machine, because it makes assumptions=20 about the card's settings that are no longer true when using ati.2. So, if you have ati.2, you can watch TV (including changing=20 channels, etc.). If you have DRM to go with it (the gatos version=20 ofcourse) you can also run hardware accelerated 3D. Now, if you also want to record the video you're watching, you need=20 km. km is a kernel module that creates /dev/videoX, and sets up DMA=20 transfers from the card to kernel memory, after which you can get=20 the data from /dev/videoX. km does not know anything about tuners=20 or setting up the display, all it knows is how to get data out of a=20 card that is already displaying the stream. So you need the ati.2=20 driver to set up the card for display, and then you use km to=20 actually get it to disk. Now, since you don't want to do this by hand, there is AVview, which=20 does all this for you, and provides a nice GUI to change channels=20 and record things. AVview requires ALSA to capture sound; since=20 you're using 2.6.1 you most likely already have that set up. So, to wrap it all up into some concrete advice: get the ati.2=20 binaries (or source, you need an XFree86 source tree to compile=20 them though), and install them. Get AVview, and run it. See if you=20 can watch TV. If that works, add km, and see if you can capture.=20 Leave DRM well alone, if you don't need hardware 3D acceleration,=20 it can do more harm than good. So, if I'm just interested in video capture, I can just use the 2.6 kernel
DRM?
Will the 2.6 kernel module conflict with avview or km?

Here is a snip from the km README. As I read this, all I need is AVview. I
also don't see how km becomes a kernel module. There is no copying of a
*.o file to /lib/modules/2.6.*. Also, what creates /dev/videoXXX? ati.2
or km?
...snip>
* edit Makefile
* compile
* become root and issue "make test"
* start X
* get AVview, compile it
* run AVview
* enjoy
* tweak
kmultimedia websites: http://gatos.sf.net
Additional notes:
1) I guess I should have put this into README:
the way km works is this:
* you setup TV-in using AVview and Xserver - which means
you see TV in a window.
* now you can use km to see video data. When an application
opens /dev/videoXXX created by km the code check to see
whether AIW card is receiving data from the decoder.
If this is true km sets up DMA transfers to deliver data
into main RAM. If not it reports -ENODATA.
...end snip.

Hello! I noticed from gatos.sf.net that there are tv-out drivers now available supporting clone-mode.. I'm interested using the tv-out as another head (not clone mode). Is this possible currently? There has been some discussion on dri-devel about accelerated 3D (opengl) on both heads using mergedfb code.. does this help? I was suggested at dri-devel to contact gatos list. I'd like to run my VJ software in my laptop (which has radeon mobility M6). The display of the laptop being the first head (for the control gui of vj app), and the tv-out being another head for the visualization thingy (running opengl). why can't broken PAL to YUV4MPEG2 work ATI cards I am trying to understand why we can't do stuff like translating broken PAL to YUV4MPEG2. Is this because the signal is already converted and is not a raw signal? see this site for more info http://www.phys.uu.nl/~snel/cc2y4m/ |

I'm just now installing a 8500dv on a box running kernel 2.6, and xfree86-4.3. I want to do video capture from a vcr running old video tapes. I've dl'd ati.2 , drm-kernel , avview and km. In the 2.6 kernel I have: CONFIG_DRM_RADEON=y Do I still need drm-kernel? ati.2 is a patch to xfree86. Do I need this with 4.3.0? 4.4? cvs? avview is userspace. Is it comparable - a replacement for - Xawtv? What about km? Is this similar to xawtv? xine? Sorry for all the questions, but I've found this somewhat confusing. sean _________________________________________________________________ High-speed usersbe more efficient online with the new MSN Premium Internet Software. http://join.msn.com/?pgmarket=en-us&page=byoa/prem&ST=1 |

With arecord I can use any sampling rate I like, so I don't think it's
got s.th. to do with that.
I compared arecord and avview/alsa.c and found that everything was the
same except for the access method which is RW_INTERLEAVED in avview and
MMAP_INTERLEAVED in arecord. I'd like to produce the same error in
arecord, but I'm not able to change the access method by commandline,
but I guess it's related with that.
Perhaps it's a bug of alsa and my soundcard (Terratec DMX 1024 ->
cs46xx). I try to get more infos on the alsa-list...
Here is the output of arecord:
