Just delete your ~/.avview_state file. Make sure to restart your
x-server ( reboot is easiest ). Restart avview and go through the setup.
If it doesn't want to start, look for error messages in your XF86
config.log and /usr/X11R6/bin/xvinfo.

Thank you for replying Spence. I think meet your requirements.
$ rpm -qa | grep -E '(avv|ati.2|ffm)'
avview-0.12.0-1mdk
ati.2-4.3.20030708-1mdk
ffmpeg-0.4.6-2mdk
libffmpeg0.4.6-0.4.6-2mdk
libffmpeg0.4.6-devel-0.4.6-2mdk
I also looked through the source code a little. File avview.scp
reads the settings from file ~/.avview_state, or maybe ~/.avview.
This is line 514 of avview.scp:
if { $avview_version != $saved_avview_version } {
...
raise .setup
Whatever is happening in that block, it exits INSTEAD of letting
me edit data. There should be an option like --create-config-file
or similar.
Can you post a valid .avview_state configuration file for me to
experiment with? I'm guessing that if I have an initial version
of this file I can make it work.

Keep in mind that kernel accounting of time it spends is not perfect.
Also, I do not think cpu usage has to be 100%. Indeed, if the performance
of 3d application is limited by the graphics card then it stands to reason
that it will spend some time waiting for the card to finish drawing.
Of course, smart apps can use this time to do something useful, but
glxgears is just for testing.

Hello, When using hardware-accelerated 3D, should the system CPU be 100% utilized? On my system (Radeon AIW 7200 with gatos drivers), glxgears at the default size gets 940 FPS, and the CPU is 30% utilized. At full-screen, I get 85 FPS, and the CPU is 2% utilized. I had thought that hardware-accelerated 3D would not use the CPU fully, but over on this thread, Tim McCoy says otherwise: http://groups.google.com/groups?dq=&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&c2coff=1&safe=off&threadm=535ab17d.0312260330.7594fd24%40posting.google.com&rnum=1&prev=/groups%3Fdq%3D%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DUTF-8%26oe%3DUTF-8%26group%3Dcomp.os.linux.hardware%26c2coff%3D1%26safe%3Doff%26selm%3D535ab17d.0312260330.7594fd24%2540posting.google.com ...leading me to believe that I *should* in fact be getting better framerates out of my 7200, and if it were performing to its full potential, then my CPU would be spiked at 100%. What's the truth here? When you run glxgears, does it put your CPU at 100%? Thanks, Anthony http://nodivisions.com/ |

I installed avview-0.12.0-1mdk.i586.rpm from ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/Mandrake/9.2/contrib/i586. When I run start_avview, it pops up a message saying: It appears you have not run AVview 0.12.0 before. Please go through all settings and adjust them as appropriate. When I click OK it shuts down without giving me a chance to adjust anything. How can I set the initial settings? I'm using an ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon, which worked with a previous version of AVview. -Ken |

Hello, I have an ATI Rage Fury Pro VIVO (based on Rage 128 Pro, 32M, video in/out, no TV tuner). And a RH9-based distro. I want to use video input, and besides, to try and get 3d accel working (without GATOS, if I load DRI in the X config file, I get periodic lockups wih no apparent reason - not even in 3D apps, just at any moment in X; they don't appear if I don't load DRI). The video input is the more important task. And I live in Russia. Hence, question 1: will it support at least PAL, if not SECAM? (It does in Windows, although I'm not sure about SECAM). Question 2. Should I just untar the .tgz into the XFree86 dir, with no change to the config file, i.e. the driver name? Question 3. Should I install the drm-kernel module? The Web page speaks of Radeons, but my card is no Radeon. Thanks in advance for any answers! Yours, Mikhail Ramendik |

Well, I just run a test on my system (dual Athlon 1900+, Radeon AIW 7500)
and I get 1500 fps for glxgears in standard (small) window and 148 fps
when maximized to fullscreen.

The Matrox Parhelia even does 32-bit=20 with 10 bits per channel, which is nice. Ofcourse, if you're=20 playing an action game, you'll probably want more frames per second=20 rather than more bitdepth and less bandig, so 16-bit is probably a=20 better choice then. It all depends on the application. Unfortunately the RandR X=20 extension doesn't support depth switching. An alternative, if you=20 have enough (virtual) memory, is to run two X servers. You will=20 only get 3D acceleration on one though. That's what I do, I run 1024x768x16 accelerated server for games, and a second 1920x1440x32=20 unaccelerated server for the rest. Works fine, but ofcourse it's a=20 bit wasteful as you're only using one X server at the time. Then=20 again, the other can just be swapped out to disk when it's not in=20 use. Yeah, I've tried it at 16bit and then it goes from ~940 FPS to ~1220 FPS.
But since I see lots of people saying they're getting ~3500 FPS with other
cards, I thought maybe there was a problem with mine. But I guess my card
is getting pretty old ("old" in this industry is a year or two, after all...).
Anyway, I'm concerned about the color depth. I do some digital photography,
and had always thought that 16bit color was inadequate. Any thoughts on
that? Can anyone point me to some research/commentary stating otherwise?

It is true that I am not testing Rage 128 cards very often (takes time to
swap them, and I don't want to touch production system too often),
however, the incompatibility you mention is due to hardware - both km and
dri drm use the same registers on Rage128.. The easiest way to get around
this is to not load rage128 drm module at all.

Could you let me know which binaries posted on the page work for you ?
If something broke in Rage128 driver it would help to know when.

I think your system is working just fine.. Try reducing the resolution to
16 bit, the frame rate should go right up.

Hello, I'm running Radeon AIW (Radeon 7200) with Xfree86 4.3 and ati.2 experimen= tal 13. TV in is working fine. glxgears is accelerated fine. Now I have a problem with my open gl software: It seems the function glXSwapBuffers() doesn't work correct. It seems that everything is rendered directly to the frontbuffer. The program first clears the screen and then renders a scence. The scene = then flickers as you can see the black background for a short time. If I don't call glXSwapBuffers() the screen remains black and if I call i= t only once it flickers like above - and the scene is animated! So it seems the first call is necessary. May be the pointers to front and= back buffers are not adjusted correctly? The flickering is also visible in other open gl applications. My program works fine with other hardware or with Xfree86 4.2 (accelerated by dri). Any suggestions? Thanks, Thomas |

Thanks. I had the same problem (and happen to have an emu10k1 soundcard and a Radeon 7200, too), and it turned out that I wasn't actually using the Alsa sound drivers on my system. They weren't even installed properly, and I was using the OSS drivers instead. Run Xmms and go to the preferences section, set Output Plugin to Alsa, and see if it plays. And/or, try to run: aplay <some_file.wav> If those don't work, then you might not have Alsa installed; that was the problem in my case. -Anthony http://nodivisions.com/ |

Hi list, I'm using the tv_output branch of CVS without many problems. Still, I've got 2 of them (problems), even if small, but I would like to know some opinions. The first and most important is that, using mplayer or xine to watch movies, I get randomply some slowing down effect. Reading mplayer docs I understand that this should be caused by ati.2 vsync feature which is on by default; is there a simple way to disable this feat? The second one is less important, but annoying: the image on the TV set is quite shifted on the right side, and I did not find any way of moving it: is there any? Thanks in advance! ______________________________________________________________________ Yahoo! Hi all, I installed ati.2 and avview. I could run avview with no problem. But I didnot get the sound. I had two video cards in the box. I disabled the onboard one in bios. The RH9 will found them all but I only use the Creative one, it uses emu10k1. I could test the sound use redhat-config-soundcard. How cannot I get the sound in TV? btw, I use Radeon 7200. Thanks.
