This is strictly an OGL question - you need to find a version of OpenGL that supports stereo with a given hardware/OS combination. I am attaching a very simple OGL program that you can compile and run to test if you have come up with a winning combination. I just used the following line to compile, but you will have to adjust to compile with the right versions of the includes/libraries for your system: cc -I/usr/local/include -L/usr/local/lib stereotest.c -lX11 -lGL -lm jeff -- Jeff W. Hello, That what we see on the home page : The Vis5d+ Release Notes This document summarizes the changes for new releases of Vis5d+. Vis5d+ 1.2.0 November 1, 2001. The NCAR modifications to vis5d 5.2 have been added. Support for stereo display mode (requires hardware support and proper configuration) Please, can someone tell what does it mean "proper configuration"? Where to read about it? I think the description of the required hardware support also would be very helpful. Please, any ideas about where to read about this? I already posted questions similar to the above ones. This was an answer: It simply means that the OGL libraries on the system recognize that stereo is available. And that vis5d+ is compiled with that version of the OGL libraries. I am still confused. Are 'OGL' libraries Mesa libraries? Well I have Linux box (2.4.7-10) with Mesa package and vis5d+ v1.2.1. The video card is nVidia GeForce2 MX which supports stereo according to the info from nVidia site. I don't have stereo effect. Please, help. Thank you. Oleg Uvarov |

All: We are currently preparing to work with some colleagues who have a Geowall-like setup (URL is below) which is using a rear-projected passive screen system and Redhat. We are hoping to get Vis5D+, Cave 5D or descendant package up and running in that environment in stereo viewing mode. Has anyone else had luck with a similar environment? We suspect, given some previous email's we've read here, that it V5D+ goes to active, but what would be required for it to be a viable passive viewing applications. http://www.geo.lsa.umich.edu/geowall/indexmain.html <http://www.geo.lsa.umich.edu/geowall/indexmain.html> ================================================================ Bill Capehart <Wil...@sd...> Assistant Professor Institute of Atmospheric Sciences Land Surface Processes 213 Mineral Industries Building Hydrometeorology South Dakota School of Mines and Technology Ph: +1-605-394-1994 Rapid City, SD 57701-3995 Fax: +1-605-394-6061 ==== http://www.hpcnet.org/sdsmt/personnel/wcapehart/about ===== |

Hello. Please, I need help to identify what video card supporting stereographics mode to buy in order to deploy stereo capabilities of vis5d+ (RH Linux 7.2 v. 2.4.7-10). Actually, how to deploy such vis5d+ features? Does it know by itself that I have hardware supporting stereo or I should configure it somehow? On one of my boxes for example i686, RH 7.2 (2.4.7-10) I have GeForce 2 MX video card. nVidia says that it supports stereo (OpenGL API). I've heard that I shoud run vis5d+ like this: vis5d -stereo blah.v5d It does exactly the same as it would do without any stereo. So I assume that I do (or expect) something wrong. I see in vis5d control window 3 empty buttons wich seem to be doing nothing. I guess might be some of them should have something when vis5d+ will recognize hardware supporting stereo? Please, help. Thank you. Oleg Uvarov |

Yes, as a matter of fact. I was getting the same error on Mac OS X. The solution for me was in the file analysis.c, where it turned out that OS X had the same behavior as IBM RS/6000. Using -Dibm in CFLAGS uses the alternate code (which looks for a truncated socket name). Maybe that will work for you, too. (What is your system?) By the way, this was with vis5d.4.3, but it probably carries over to vis5d+. -- Ted At 2:33 PM +0100 2/20/02, Victor Homar wrote: >Hi all, > >Has anyone found the error: > >"External Function Error: Couldn't bind socket to name:: Address already in use" ? > >It appears (in console, not graphically), when calculating any external function. >We are using vis5d+-1.1 under Linux Red Hat 7.1 >We are not able to determine what is the origin of the error and how to solve it. Hi all, Has anyone found the error: "External Function Error: Couldn't bind socket to name:: Address already in use" ? It appears (in console, not graphically), when calculating any external function. We are using vis5d+-1.1 under Linux Red Hat 7.1 We are not able to determine what is the origin of the error and how to solve it. We cannot determine now when it appears and how is it solved. Thanks in advance, Victor Homar |

I have been playing around with the geographical-outline databases that we use here at NCAR and have extended my map database editor to enable writing map files for Vis5D. In particular, I have created two map files; the first contains international boundaries (not totally up-to-date and not very high resolution, but not too bad), plus state and provincial boundaries in Canada, the US, and Mexico; the second contains all that and, in addition, county boundaries for the US. As far as I know, we (NCAR) would be glad to contribute this to the Vis5D community. How do I go about that? (I looked at "http://vis5d.sf.net" and it wasn't clear to me how to proceed.) Hello,
I have OSF1 V5.1 732 alpha with vis5d+ installed (v. 1.2.1, all default
dirs).
I have installed grib libraries as well (/usr/local/lib).
Now I am trying to build and use grib2v5d.
When I have VIS5D not set the configure script asks me to set it up
(although it is said in docs to unset it if there is correctly installed
vis5d+, another questions is what does it mean 'correctly installed', my
installation went smoothly and I am able to use vis5d+ as it described
in its docs).
I set up VSI5D in Configure.set.
Then the configure script seems to be working well (although there is
still scary 'f90: Severe: Failed while trying to link.' at the end):
bash-2.04# ./configure

Jim, Jeff, Thank you for your reply. I realize that there are no automatic converters from VRML2 to VRML1 due to the absence of backward compatibility. Also, I checked a few of interactive visual systems capable to import/export different formats - they are not convenient and the results of exporting are not correct for some Vis5d scenes. But, I have to visualize the output results of Vis5D with a specific tool which can read only VRML1 data. So, I will try to re-write this "graphics.vrml.c" module for my purposes. I don't believe we ever created a version for VRML1.0 output. At least, the earliest version of the code I could find in our CVS repository used the "#VRML 2.0" header in the file. (I didn't look close enough to determine if it was VRML2.0 or VRML97.) The VRML97 standard was standardized in December of 97, and VRML2.0 was in use for a year or more before that. So, are you really using that old of a VRML reader? What are you using that needs VRML1.0? (The VRML output from vis5d+ conforms to the VRML97 standard.) I don't believe you will have much luck editing things out to make it conform to VRML1.0 - if I remember correctly 1.0 was pretty limited, and you would probably end up commenting out most of the VRML file. But, I suppose you could try... jeff Jim Edwards wrote: > > Igor, > > I don't think there is but you may be able to go into the (text) vrml output > file and hand edit any 2.0 specific stuff out? Estel, I suggest a simple test, just type: od -c yourfile.v5d or, if you dare, more yourfile.v5d If the first characters of the file are not V5D but something like D5V then you probably didn't apply correctly Bill's suggestion, otherwise som= e more information about your program or the output file is needed. best wishes, Davide On Fri, 1 Feb 2002, Estel Cardellach wrote: > =A0 > Thank you for you quick answer. > I've just tried it but it does not work... >=20 > some more ideas? >=20 > Estel --=20 __________________________________________________________ Davide Cesari Servizio Meteorologico Regionale __ tel. Hi Estel, If you are running on Linux or DEC/Compaq Alpha, then you need to add '-DLITTLE to CFLAGS' in foo2_to_v5d.f.m, the make file for foo2_to_v5d.f. Good luck, Bill Estel Cardellach wrote: > > Dear colleague, > > I'm trying to convert text files into v5d format by using the foo2_to_v5d. f > I've inserted my own code to read the header and the body of my txt files. Hello, I am looking for Vis5d+ source codes similar to "graphics.vrml.c" for VRML 1.0 output instead of VRML2.0. Is the code for VRML1 exporting available?
