Hi, Very short: I was trying to run vis5 (at my HP machine) from a Silicon Graphics and I get funny error messages. Could anyone helpe with that? At least to understand what is complaining for. Thanks and Happy New Year -- Gustavo A. Olivares P. Universidad de Chile Departamento de Ing. Quimica |

Hi Gustavo, Without knowing what the error messages were, I would have to guess that your remote display setting was not set correctly on the Silicon Graphics machine. I hope this helps. Gustavo, It still seems to me to be a configuration problem with the DISPLAY environment variable. I could be wrong, though. Can you run Vis5d locally (from the SG machine)? If so, do you get the same error messages? Hi Gustavo, I suspect that your vis5d on the SGI is compiled to use OpenGL, and is talking to an HP with PEX. Try recompiling vis5d with 'make irix6-x'. It'll be a lot slower this way, but the root of your problem may be incompatible 3-D graphics libraries. Good luck, Bill ---------------------------------------------------------- Bill Hibbard, SSEC, 1225 W. No, sea level is 0.0 and underwater topo has negative values. People do produce bathymetry files for Vis5D, so I don't know the cause of your problem. About a month ago there was an inquiry on this list for a vis5d animation of Antarctica from a non-hydrostatic model. It has taken me awhile, but I have been able to put my vis5d animations from the Ross Island region, Antarctica on an anonymous ftp site. The files were created from a high resolution wind flow study using the University of Wisconsin Non-hydrostatic Modeling System (UW-NMS). Additional information is included in the README file. I have also included a high resolution map file for Antarctica at the site. (OUTLANT) ftp://uwamrc.ssec.wisc.edu/pub/seefeldt Happy Holidays Mark Seefeldt |

Hi
I tried the modifications suggested.
however the topo layer is still at the 0.0 level (sea level)
I still cannot have the underwater relief shown
(I only see the 2-d colored image at the top)
does it mean that I had to code my underwater topo data's baselevel as level
0.0???
and the various depth converted to "height" from this baselevel???
Thank You
GT

Hi NG,
My guess is that you still have the follwoing code in
your maketopo.c:
for (r=0;r<ROWS;r++) {
for (c=0;c<COLUMNS;c++) {
if (Topo[r][c] <= 0.0) {
Water[r][c] = 1;
}
else {
Water[r][c] = 0;
}
}
}
This sets the "Water" flag wherever the topo is below sea
level. Change it to:
for (r=0;r<ROWS;r++) {
for (c=0;c<COLUMNS;c++) {
Water[r][c] = 0;
}
}
Good luck and happy holidays,
Bill

Hi to all out there
I am using Vis5d to visualise some oceanography data.
I tried the Maketopo utility.
However the topo map appears at the 0.0 level
how do I get the underwater topo shown and not just see a blue layer at the
top
does it mean that I had to code the data as 0.0 level being the base of my
underwater topo?
Anyone can help???
ps: by the way, enjoy the holidays
Merry Christmas !!!

Do you *need* to use Solaris? If you do need, try to get the latest
version of XFree86 and install in your system, but be warned that free
operating systems like {Free,Net,Open}BSD and (yup!) Linux have much
better support for PC architectures.

AFAIK, Sun only offers OpenGL for SPARC systems. XFree86 4.x comes with
GLX (code donated by SGI) and Mesa (code donated by Brian Paul).
NRS> 3. What video card(s) on intel does Vis5D 'like'.
As any other X program, Vis5D depends on the quality of the X server, and
the later on the graphics hardware. For up-to-date information on hardware
support in XFree86, take a look at
http://www.xfree86.org/4.0.1/Status.html
NRS> 4. Is 64MB of VRAM pretty much essential for 3D rendering in

It depends on the amount of data you need to manage.
NRS> 5. Any other words of wisdom on this subject?
"There will be an answer: `Let it be'". :-)

Hello, there, I have trouble to compile the v5dimport. Does anyone know if there are precompiled executables 'v5dimport' for DEC Alpha and for lunux ? Thank you in advance, Akira |

I'm planning for computers in our meteorology instruction lab and am looking at intel boxes running Solaris x86. Vis5D will be an integral teaching tool. Can you help with some questions I've got and also provide any helpful hints or heads-up's? 1. What version of Solaris-for-intel is recommended for Vis5D? 2.
