Well, relatively cheap... See http://www.evl.uic.edu/cavern/agave/vis5d for a description of how to get vis5d to work with a GeoWall ( http://www.geowall.org ) which is sort of like an immersadesk only using off-the-shelf hardware. I will be building a GeoWall this summer at Central Michigan University and expect to use vis5d as a teaching tool in the classroom. Students get to weare nerdy goggles, that ought to be a plus. Seriously, this is something that I think some of you may find worth checking out. You can build a GeoWall, which consists of two data projectors, a computer with a certain kind of graphics card, and a special projection screen that preserves polarization, for around $10,000. I have not yet seen one of these in action but I am told the stereo effect is on line with the stereo IMAX movies, and uses the same basic technology. I think the source of the Vis5D map projections was a manual from the USGS. PoleRow and PoleCol are just what it says in the README, that you quoted below: the location of the north or south pole in your grid coordinates. These map projections are a mess. Don't expect any easy answers. Hello, In user's guide 3.2 Map Projection chapter you have an example of Lambert conformal projection for Wisconsin (http://vis5d.sourceforge.net/doc/ch03sec2.html). How PoleRow and PoleCol are calculated in your example, please refer me to corresponding source. Sincerely, Irene Lambert conformal This is a conic projection defined by the following six parameters. Lat1, Lat2: First and second standard latitudes in the range [-90S,90N]. Lat1 and Lat2 define where the imaginary cone intersects the sphere of the Earth. Lat1 and Lat2 must have the same sign, that is, they must both be positive or both negative. Also, Lat1 must be greater than or equal to Lat2. PoleRow, PoleCol: These parameters indicate the position of the north or south pole with respect to the 3-D grid coordinate system. These values may be outside the 3-D grid. If Lat1 and Lat2 are positive, the north pole is assumed, else, the south pole is assumed. CentLon: Central longitude: this parameter indicates which Earth longitude is to be parallel to the 3-D grid columns. ColInc: Increment (spacing) between grid columns at the central longitude and standard latitudes, in km. This parameter controls the scale of the projection. Example 1: Suppose your 3-D grid has 35 rows and 40 columns and you want a Lambert conformal projection of the United States centered over Wisconsin: Lat1 = 70.0 Lat2 = 20.0 PoleRow = -35.0 PoleCol = 20.0 Central Longitude = 90.0 ColInc = 100.0 Bill Hibbard wrote: > > Irene, > > > Irene Shumyatsky wrote: > > > Scott, > > > > > > Thank you so much for your quick response. Hi Jeff, Vis5D doesn't use a vertical grid where z spacing varies in x and y, except in generic coordinates where topography is wrong (the vertical levels are still displayed as flat). The irregular data are for point obs, not grids. Our VisAD system can handle vertical grids where z spacing varies with x and y. It doesn't have the same performance or nice GUI of VisAD, but is getting there via Unidata's IDV. Cheers, Bill ---------------------------------------------------------- Bill Hibbard, SSEC, 1225 W. Hello, I plan on using Vis5d to visualize model output from ARPS. The model incorporates a terrain following vertical coordinate, z, which is used as the vertical coordinate in Vis5d. However, this presents a problem since the terrain following surface is not flat, but it is plotted as such. Overlaying the terrain on top of the model output fields causes data to be plotted below ground is areas where the terrain height > 0 (because the terrain data file uses heights above MSL, zp, not a terrain following grid (z) ). I plan on fixing this problem by reading in the v5d file output by the model, then converting the vertical grid back to actual height and creating a new v5d file. Is this the easiest way to do this? Any suggestions on how to do this? Also, a related question: Can Vis5d use a vertical grid such that the spacing between vertical levels varies in x and y? (i.e. delta z = f(x,y) )? The vertical grid section in the readme file implies that I can't. However, the readme document also mentions an irregular data type called a "record." I'm wondering if I could possibly display these data that way. Thank you for any suggestions. Jeff Frame PSU Department of Meteorology Graduate Program |

Victor, About 1 year ago I changed jobs and much to my disappointment, I had to give up my continuation of development of vis5d+. vis5d+ really needs a champion to lead in continuing development. I am sure that what you see is a memory access to an unallocated array. If you could take that further step and find and correct the problem it would be a welcomed service to the entire vis5d community. Hi, I'm an old Vis5d user (nearly 7 years of use) and I'm now trying to migrate to the vis5d+ versions. I've downloaded the 1.2.1 and 1.3.0-beta packages and they "configures", and installs very well on my Linux RedHat8 with Nvidia OpenGL drivers (Linux 2.4.18-18.8.0smp). The thing is that I'm used to work with several (2 or 3) v5d files (contexts) and I use to "Group" them and put several contexts in the same DISPLAY. Now, I get a Segmentation fault when I try to "Group" displays (in particular when I click on the second display I want to group). It may be of interest that I don't get the error when I open the same file on the two displays (or contexts), only when I open different v5d files. I also get a segmentation fault when I try to put 2 contexts on 1 DISPLAY (through the DISPLAY buttonn at the main Vis5d+ GUI). In this case, even with the same v5d file opened in both DISPLAYs, I get the Segmentation fault. Another issue is the userfuncs/externf settings in vis5d+ on Linux machines. I know the libmain.a was used in the old Vis5d release but now it looks like the external functions need it but it is not built any more. How can we compile external functions under Linux? Last thing referrs to a DATE recognition problem of vis5d when loading a single-timestep files. When I open a file with only one timestep the vis5d (I've noticed it in versions vis5d-1.2, vis5d+1.1, vis5d+1.2.1) does not recognize the date and shows 000000 190000 instead of the correct time and date. The header of the file is correct because when I append it to another file (so building a multiple timesteps file), the time and date are well recognized by vis5d. Have you noticed the same? Have you got a patch for this bug? Sorry if these problems have already been reported to the Vis5d lists. I'm trying to access to the Vis5d+ users list to see if someone has also found that but I get a "permission denied" error from the Source Forge page. I'm registered to both (devel and user) lists and to Source Forge also. I can access the Vis5d+ devel list but I can't read the past messages of the Vis5d+ user list. Thanks a lot! We have a conversion program that convert our raw data files to v5d format. It works very well except for the date/time stamps which are messed up, I tried using v5dedit to fix the datestamp but it didn't work. The most it did was change to datestamp to "00000". probably that's why I am having trouble using vis5d_get_ctx_time_stamp. Funny thing is, on v5d display window the clock shows the right time. I appreciate any suggestion, I really need to get my script working thanks |

Has anyone ever tried to view, say, 6 different wind vector plots
simultaneously on multiple windows in one vis5d display?
e.g.:
vis5d a.v5d -wind2 u_a v_a \
b.v5d -wind2 u_b v_b \
c.v5d -wind2 u_c v_c \
d.v5d -wind2 u_d v_d \
e.v5d -wind2 u_e v_e \
f.v5d -wind2 u_f v_f
The manual seems to imply that the above should work, but
I can't seem to get what I want. Any ideas? Workarounds?
I'm using vis5d-5.2 on Irix 6.5.
Thanks for any suggestions or pointers.

Hi all, until recently I was running vis5d+-1.3.0-beta under OS X 10.2.3 with no problems (though I had some minor trouble with the build). I was using Xdarwin and Xfree86 installed via fink. All was well. I recently decided to give Apple's version of X11 a try. It's still in beta, so I expected possible problems, and I found them. After I installed Apple's X11 User and X11 SDK packages, I found that I could no longer view data with vis5d. I rebuilt it, but that made no difference. The program runs, and the control windows (with buttons, scales, etc) work fine, but the 3-D display window just shows garbage. This garbage appears to be thin lines grabbed from the main display, and it doesn't change, even when something is done which should change the view. I posted a question to Apple's X11 user's mailing list, and received a suggestion to try an unusual recipe of actions. It didn't work exactly the same for me, but I did find that when I use a 1x2 display matrix (chosen from the DISPLAY button in the control panel) then it clears up, and I can view things normally. If I switch back to 1x1, then I get garbage again. Any ideas? Configuration flags, etc? According to Apple's ReadMe.rtf, "OpenGL offscreen rendering is not yet supported." Could that be an issue here? It would be nice to figure this out, then I could submit a bug report to Apple to see about clearing it up. Other than this their X11 implementation is rather nice. Thanks, Mike -- Mike Zulauf maz...@me... |

Hi Bill, Follow your README Vis5D version 5.1 Customizing 2.4 to change topography file. 1. First way to edit src/vis5d.h. There is no file with such name, there are 2 files in src/ v5d.h and v5df.h, both files doesn't have a TOPOFILE entry. 2. Try the other way, press DISPLAY and OPTIONS buttons, the form OPTIONS shows up but to long to fit the screen, the bottom of the form is cut off, anyway, I try to change the file name for my topo file in corresponding text box but there is no way to save it, closing the form causes exit for vis5d application. Hi,
I have a problem when trying to use v5dwrite() function in C.
I have declare the following:
Numtimes = 10
Numvars = 3 { x, y, z }
etc.
And I have the following data
Time var x y z
1 1 10 10 10
1 2 20 20 20
1 3 30 30 30
1 4 40 40 40
.
.
.
1 n n*10 n*10 n*10
.
.
.
10 n n*10 n*10 n*10
So I have the following code that fails:
...
float data[3] { 10, 10, 10 };
int time = 1;
int var = 1;
v5dwrite( time, var, data ); ---> here I get a segmentation fault
...
Can you help me? Thanks in advance.

You need to make sure you have the GL headers, etcetera. If you are using Apple's new X11 implementation, I suspect that you have to install the "SDK" separately. BTW, I used the config.sub and config.guess files that come with the system. Thanks, Don Dunbar |
