After a long hiatus, I have sat down again with the GEMVIS package and have
gotten further than I've ever gotten before at the last compile step
however, I've gotten a few seemingly intractable errors:
For the record I'm working with gempak/nawips-5.6A and vis5d+-1.2.1

Has anyone made it past this hurdle?

Hi all, I'm wondering if there is any way of using a function simmilar to time(U,-1) (used in the typed-in funtions) in the external functions. That would be very useful when programming complex functions using fields from different timesteps. Thanks to all, Victor. |

Emanuele You may want to check out Ferret at http://ferret.wrc.noaa.gov/Ferret/Documentation/ferret_documentation.html Ferret is able to convert netCDF files to v5d format quite easily with one command. I frequently use ferret to do just that, and to manipulate netcdf files. And it works pretty well. But ferret can be a little hard to use since it is mainly command prompt driven, although an unsupported GUI exists. I think it's worthwhile if you do a lot of netcdf file manipulation. Hope this helps. -Kek > Bill Hibbard wrote: > > Hi Emanuele, > > > I have configured and "made" vis5d with netcdf support, but I am not > > > able to import any netcdf file. That warning always occurs, and is nothing to worry about. If you are using -DLITTLE in CFLAGS in your make file, then I don't know what the problem is. My only suggestion is to try Vis5d+, which is linked from the Vis5D web page. But I don't know how Vis5d+ handles the programs in the convert directory - I've been busy with VisAD during recent years and out-of-the-loop on Vis5D (and grateful to those who took it over). Hi,I'm marco antonioli from University of Brescia,Italy.
I have downloaded your lastest version of vis5d but I have some data conversion problems....My operating system is Linux (2.2.17) and I use -DLITTLE option while compiling.
I use "foo_to_v5d.c" to convert my input data file in v5d format file.I have modified this C-code file following your hints, but when I try to run vis5d executable file it says that input file is not in v5d format.... While compiling foo_to_v5d.c file appears a warning saying:
foo_to_v5d.c:139: warning passing arg 7 of "v5dCreateSimple" from incompatible pointer type
Now, arg 7 of v5dCreateSimple is variable "Varname" and in my foo_to_v5d.c I read it like string-type(%s in C_language)...is this the correct way??
Thank for your help
Sincerely,
marco

Hi Elizabeth, I also got the error that you are referring to in comment (2) below concerning the graupel field, and I know for sure my MMOUT_DOMAIN file does contain graupel based on the microphysics parameterization I chose. I edited the tovis5d.csh file to include GRAUPEL in the discard_fields line and I got my tovis5d code to work - I get the usual message at the end of the tovis5d.log file saying the program "normally ended". When I don't include GRAUPEL in the discard_fields line I get the error you describe below. It sounds like you have already done this - you say you have taken graupel out - so not sure what the problem might be. I was wondering if anyone else has ran into the graupel problem - and what the bug fix is if they have encountered it? I am working with the tovis5d code available from the NCAR MM5 homepage. I am trying to view 1km horizontal resolution output (using the 30sec terrain data, 23 levels, 3sec time period on a Sun Ultra 10 workstation) over a region in California/Nevada. Just FYI.
I've since managed a workaround to the reported problem with v5dedit re
changing variable names: I provide a name with exactly 8 characters.
That way, there are no unexpected invisible trailing whitespace in the
var name.
Cheers

Hi Elizabeth, It looks like you are trying to visualize a large data set. You can increase the row and column maxima by editing src/v5d.h, then recompile everything (run 'make clean' then make for your compile). Also, you may need more memory (either buy more, or increase your swap space). Good luck, Bill ---------------------------------------------------------- Bill Hibbard, SSEC, 1225 W. Thank you very much for the helpful solution.
However, there appears to be a problem with v5dedit.
Using v5dedit to change the variable names seems to add some sort of
carriage-return character (or some whitespace char) at the end of the
new variable name. This shows up in the variable list in the vis5d
control panel. This is okay, but I cannot specify the new variable
names as 'wind' or 'wind2' vectors (either at the cmd line or by using
the "UVW" button on the vis5d control panel). After specifying the wind
vectors and clicking 'ok', I don't see the wind vector vars when I press
the "UVW" button again.
Even changing the wind var names to U, V, U2, V2, (via v5dedit) does not
help.
Any way to get around this apart from regenerating the v5d file from
scratch with new variable names?
Thanks for any answers.

The way to do this is to make a copy mydata2 of your file. The use v5dedit to change the name of the variables in mydata2. Then run 'vis5d mydata mydata2' and you can enable graphics for variables from one file without enabling them for the other. James, Has anyone responded to you yet? I'm sorry I did not respond earlier. Can you tell me what messages were written to your screen when you ran your program? The reason I ask, is that usually, the word "stop" tells the program (and all subsequent subroutines) to do just that - stop. I noticed your "convert" subroutine has "stop" instead of "return", and although you have a line with the label "20", nothing refers to it, so your subroutine will never skip the "stop" statement, and thus will never return to the main program. As a result, the v5dclose function is never called. This particular function does more than just close the file, and calling it is necessary for the file to be in the proper format. Let me know if this helps. Regards, Dan McCormick James Lamm wrote: >Hi, I am using vis5d and tried to create a very simple vis5d file >with your foo_to_v5d.f program. Hi I'm using vis5d 5.2 on SGI Irix 6.5 and vis5d+ 1.2 on Solaris 8. - How do I animate (in sync) 2 different variables from the same dataset in 2 different "display"s in the same vis5d session? I tried doing something like "vis5d mydata mydata" and grouped the 2 displays (for syncing the time steps) but was unable to get each display 2 different vars separately. I.e. display 0 should animate wind, and display 1 should animate contours of wave heights. I also tried to set the displays independently and then grouping them later, but grouping wipes out what I set. Any ideas? Thanks for any hints. -Kek Physical Oceanography Singapore |

Hello, I have Linux RH 7.2 on the box where I am trying to run vis5d. That what it gives me: $ vis5d LAMPS.v5d Setting visual to 24 bit truecolor with default color map Setting visual to 24 bit truecolor with default color map Unable to load font: 10x20 Unable to load font: 6x12 adding dtx to ctx 0 0 0x40e2c008 Cache size: 190 grids 19 10 Reading all grids. Unable to load font: 6x12 warning: couldn't load font "6x12" failed to load font "6x12"Segmentation fault $ I did't do anything to fonts configuration and on other boxes (I have it running on alpha station as well) everything is just fine. Please, where to look to fix this problem? Again, so far everything looks right to me with my fonts. Why vis5d can't use whatever default fonts are in the system? Thanks. - Oleg Uvarov |

I send you a patch for vis5d+-1.2.1. related to userfunction extension. I am using dual processor linux Redhat and this patch resolve some compiling problem, a segmentation fault in run time and realy activate the -funcpath pathname options. in the vis5d home patch -p1 < userfunc.diff if you use MCIdas you have to enable it in src/extmain.c I configure with: ./configure --with-memory=300 --enable-threads --enable-fortran (make) in userfuncs you can find some additional examples; you need a very little library in dir termo. You can compile it with f77 -c -o termo.o termo.f and after: externf_all termo/termo.o return in the home make install and copy cp -a userfunc /usr/local/share/vis5d+/ That's all Good luck, Paolo Patruno and Davide Cesari |
