I've installed lots of drivers. Many result in windows crashing with gnarly errors and then I revert back to the default Windows drivers. Go ATI. I'll see if I can dig up some OpenGL stuff. I don't have many games, I just play F1 2002 and have been itching to see what torcs did to rars :-) -Bob On 9/19/05 4:50 PM, "Bernhard Wymann" <be...@bl...> wrote: > Hi Bob > >> F1 2002 plays fine and at the highest res it will let me configure. > > Yo, but that uses Direct3D, so the OpenGL driver can still be broken. For me this sounds like a problem with your system (driver, BIOS setup, overclocked, too weak or broken power supply, forgotten to plug in additional power connector to your graphics board, ...). What you can try is to edit "screen.xml" in the "config" directory, set the frequency lower (the funny thing is that it does not matter if you do not use full screen), but it should NOT help. I had tried to get torcs to work several months ago under Linux (the distro is rather un important at this point). I could never get it to work. The system would always go into some sort of video failure mode and I would have to power off my machine to get it back to normal. I gave up, figuring it was something wrong with my setup. Now I'm running Windows XP. I grabbed the Torcs binary installer late last week. The install went smooth. I then tried to run torcs. The little ~640x480 window popped up with the penguin in the car. Then it tried to do something to my display and it just turned off the display instead. Same as what was happening in Linux. So the common factor here is my hardware. I have an AMD XP 2800+ and an ATI Radeon 9600 XT video card. My sound card is one of the original SB Live cards. Note that in neither of these cases did I screw with the configuration. It's out of the box. -Bob |

Hi, Just two remarks: You should follow exactly the instructions when using tools and when there are instructions of course ;-) The additional tools have been done for the developpers by the developpers so not for a use by a large public, I think that now every one is aware of that ;-) that's why the robustness was not a target for the tools. For your problem, may be the free.xml is out of date, this category is no more in use currently. Bye, Eric. Tolis Christomanos wrote: > Hi all!! Thanks for all the comments - very helpful. Any documentation on track
creation is good!
I have managed to get the relief file to work and that seems to solve
the most pressing problems on the inside of the map.
I've been trying to add more "lines" to the outside of the map to give a
more "realistic" appearance and I've hit a SIGSEGV in easymesh.cpp.
Previously I've hit issues at the realloc() line but this one looks a
little more concrete. Here's some of the output along with some quick
poking around with gdb. I do wonder whether there is some dodgy casting
of int->pointer somewhere which might only be visible in 64bit.

Hi Christos > The track how to is currently at > http://www.idiap.ch/~dimitrak/torcs/track-howto.html > > maybe I should put it somewhere on the CVS tree. I think the goal would be in the end a "track tutorial", so I think the right place would be in doc/tutorials/track/ . Please do add a license header before you commit (I would suggest FDL without front and back cover text, the same as the robot tutorial). If all the terrain is done in one object, it will never be culled and the performances will be awful. This is done after the mesh generation and don't participate in the mesh geometry. You can use additional ac3d files (see e-track-6-relief.ac in the sources) initially for setting altitude on the terrain but as the points are used in the generated mesh, it can be useful to give better mesh. If a <track>-relief.ac file exists in the directory it will be used for the terrain generation by trackgen. The mesh generator stops on closed polys, so if you want a hole in the mesh, you can draw closed polys, else you draw lines and they participate to the mesh. If you supply the external border in the "relief" file, you can used the trackgen option "-B" to use it as external border instead of generating the default rectangular border. last note, you have to set properties to your lines and polys in the "relief" files : "internal" for the inner mesh and "external" for outer mesh. May be a file containing the commands and parameters used to generate the track should be present in the track sources to help understanding the tools. Bye, Eric. |

There are a couple of fields inside the track .xml that could help. I
think the one you want is:
<section name="Terrain Generation">
<attnum name="group size" val="200"/>
</section>
The problem with the inner mesh being triangulated badly probably
appears on tracks where there is a very large empty inner
area. If the above does not work, then the only other thing you could
do is to modify trackgen to generate meshes differently (perhaps a
grid-based generation in the inner terrain)

With the track I've been building using Trackeditor, I've noticed that while the landscape mesh outside the circuit looks good and is well triangulated into fairly regular triangles, the landscape inside the circuit is a horror of very long, very thin triangles often stretching from the track edge on one side of the map all the way to the track edge on the other side of the map. While I can use a knife tool and a lot of vertex merging to reform the landscape inside the circuit into something more reasonable, I'm wondering if I'm missing something. I've noticed there are plenty of options in trackgen that I don't understand! I've also noticed that some of the tracks I've downloaded seem to have better triangulation inside the track than I've acheived. So - this is what I've been using to get the AC3D mesh. /usr/local/lib/torcs/trackgen-bin -L /usr/local/lib/torcs -a -c road -n trackname Should I be adding anything else? Thanks, Toby Haynes |

E.g. the > "non-free" cars are a tragedy, because we cannot maintain/improve it > over time. > That seems fair enough. Any material (maps/graphics) I've released in the past (and there isn't a lot of it!) has been under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share-Alike license but I don't have any problems with the FAL. Is there an effort underway to provide a central repository of graphics/models for Torcs? Obviously there are the data files currently in CVS. It would be good to build up a well structured library of logos, signs(like the distance markers), photographic textures and models for track builders to use. I've done some graphic design in my time and could easily produce some new logos with motoring/racing themes which could be placed around the tracks and on buildings. My background is more in image processing than image production but I taught Graphic Design to adults for a while so I'm not completely hopeless :-) Getting good textures isn't particularly easy, especially for trees which tend to be difficult to find in an isolated context and which are difficult to create really good alpha maps. On the other hand, Arbaro seems to make realistic tree models and could be used to create good trees by rendering them in Blender. That said, I do have a digital camera :-) A lot of the textures in TORCS have been around for a long time. It would be possible to go through and update a lot of the textures with photographic replacements (although it would be a TON of work). Perspective and lens distortion can be taken out of photos using Hugin (http://hugin.sf.net/). Perfectly tiling natural textures can be produced using the Homogenizer and Resynthesizer GIMP plugins (http://www.logarithmic.net/pfh/resynthesizer) if such a makeover is needed. It looks to me as though the AC3D format used for the models looks to be resolution insensitive, so if I replaced a texture with a higher resolution replacement it would still work. Anyway, enough rambling. I make no promises of any variety for producing any of this stuff but it does look like an interesting project. And with the TORCS 1.2.4 release driving really nicely, it's tempting to spend some more time adding bits to it ;-) Cheers, Toby Haynes |
