It should be supported by the iforce module but something isn't working quite right somewhere. I must say I haven't had loads of time to fiddle around with it so when I have a bit more freetime I might get it working. Mike. |

If there's a reasonable chance a wheel of any description (and moderate
cost) will work with TORCS, I'll rush out and buy one and try to help out.
Anything in particular I should look for?

I'm interested too, some people asked me if their XXX wheel
works with TORCS... so if you have positive or negative
experience with wheels and TORCS (or Linux in general)
I'd be glad to ear about it.

Yeah, I understand.

Sure, I don't anticipate problems with having multiple versions coexisting
at once. I'm a novice at packaging libraries, though, so it might take me
some figuring out to get my plib 1.4.2 package to build properly.

Yup, doing that. Btw, is the smoothing patch integrated into plib 1.6?
It's always easier to justify patching a library if you can demonstrate:
a) it is a backport of a patch included in a later rev
b) it in no way breaks compatibility with upstream
My problem is I expect resistance to an ITP ("Intent to Package" bug) for
plib 1.4.2. I asked around Debian, and the preferred route to take is to
fix the upstream app to use recent libraries.

If I do meet resistance to getting plib 1.4.2 into Debian, I may have to
resort to dredging up evidence to back up the ITP, but for now, I'll just
take your word for it. Still, if you could at all get it to work with 1.6
that would be the best possible solution as it keeps things moving forward.
> BTW, it is really a great idea to make Debian packages for

It's something I have wanted to do for quite a while, but I always had
problems with building/running it in the past. I have a better system now,
and the build system looks cleaner than in the pre-1.0 releases, so I am
hopeful that it will work out.
Regards,
Ben

PLIB team doesn't care that much in backward compatibility, they are
more focused on new features, and it's a lot of work to follow the
different versions of PLIB...
We have inherited C++ classes from PLIB for TORCS and it's
not compiling anymore in the later versions...
As PLIB is a static library it should be possible to
build using the 1.4.2 version of PLIB for the binary package
despite another version of PLIB is present on the system.
For a source package I don't see another solution than including
the 1.4.2 version of PLIB with TORCS, *BUT* the bad effect is
that compiling the 1.4.2 will replace other versions of PLIB
on the system as it is installed in /usr/... in an hardcoded manner.
Don't forget to apply the plib-smoothing.dif patch to PLIB
the look is really better...
Well, if there are no other solution... I'll try to
have TORCS working with more recent versions of PLIB
but I think it won't be that simple. From the activity
of PLIB mailing list I really doubt that TORCS will work
fine in a couple of minutes...
You can search for the FlightGear problems in the mailing
list to have an idea of the probable problems, but nothing's
impossible.
BTW, it is really a great idea to make Debian packages for
TORCS :-)
Eric.

Ugh. The versions I have available to me in Debian testing/unstable are
only 1.6.x and 1.7.x.
Even Debian's stable release has only plib 1.4.1 and 1.5.0. If I am to
include my package in Debian I'll have to include a version of plib that is
a candidate for release. Neither of these versions are currently release
candidates.
Is there a compelling reason for TORCS to continue to use 1.4.2?
Ben

Hi, I am reviewing TORCS to see if it is suitable for me to package for inclusion in Debian[1]. Unfortunately, I cannot even get it to build.
