I think the plan is to rig the next 2 elections and bring in so many people between 2021-2032 that the 8 elections after the two rigged ones can be won without unusual hijinks.

I posted this once before but it is relevant again because of the essay so here goes. Yale’s Denise Ho wrote a book a few years ago called Curating Revolution. The book documents how museum exhibits, and informal exhibits elsewhere, were important in propagating Mao’s ideas. The concept is that many or most people, and children especially, have difficulty grasping ways of thinking in the abstract, but are often amenable to being convinced by tangible exhibits. In fact, a single artifact was sometimes deemed to constitute “ironclad evidence” there is a Chinese word for that but I can’t remember what it is. Anyway this assault on museums is straight out of the cultural revolution.

You are quite right that they’re “explicitly jettisoning the icky white people”. But it’s precisely those icky white people like the docents quoted who made that possible. I feel zero sympathy for them.

The letter from museum management—subject line: “Future Directions”—explained that the museum was doing away with the approximately 40-year-old docent council structure and bringing in paid “learning guides” recruited from local colleges.

As I’ve noted before, there is a shocking inability in modern America to distinguish between exploitation and volunteerism. These museums are institutions. There is no owner siphoning profits making themselves rich. (Though donors seeking tax exemptions certainly often do) These institutions reinvest their profits into the institution.

So neither the docents nor the college students would be being exploited by not being paid. (Though one does question why the directors of these museums are paid such high salaries)

But I wonder if the mere idea of a black person being asked to do something for free makes these people deeply uncomfortable. (As, indeed, seems to be the background sentiment driving professionalism in the NCAA despite there not actually being the money for it)

The same issue could be seen in the whole “Liv Golf” situation.

When you change something from a volunteer or unpaid role into a paid role you profoundly change it. Is golf a sport, a public institution or is it mere entertainment and a business? It seems like a lot of people in America couldn’t comprehend the former and assumed somebody was being exploited.

Not everything is an unpaid internship with a money that makes money off your efforts and could afford to pay.

This is an American Cultural Revolution. 15 years back I read about 10 books on the Chinese version of this – mid-1960s to mid-’70s. I thought that Americans would never put up with this type of thing. I was sadly too optimistic about Americans’ understanding of who we are up against and Americans; will to get off their asses with a will to fight this.

This is not a fad! It’s not something that will go away because they’ve had their fun, realize it’s gotten pretty stupid, run out of money … The idea of Wokeness is to upend traditional mostly-White/straight/male-led society. The following is an inquiry into the origins and rise of the word “Woke” (not the concept itself, or the ideology behind it, or the Regime that manages and enforces it. Those things are much-discussed hereabouts, and clearly have many decades under their belts; just the word, which did not really exist in English as of 2015 or so).

(I would reject the idea there was something called “The Great Awokening” in the 2010s, if by that it is meant wild new trends or political-views not seen before ca. 2012/13 were introduced; the real Great Awokening would have to be pinned to the mid-1960s to mid-1970s, or so, of course… For those who believe a Great Awokening of the 2010s was a sharp break with the 1980s, 1990s, or 2000s [rather than just an extension of the ideology that had emerged by the early 1970s, see this from 1973: “George Gilder’s essay ‘Sexual Suicide’.”)

It may be of interest or value to take a look at the Google-Trends monthly-data for queries in the USA involving the words “Wokeness“and “Wokeism.”

(I note that “Woke” itself cannot be reliably used because by those who seek the origin-period of the new meaning. The old meaning of “woke,” involving the act of emerging from sleep, obfuscates results of interest. But we are interested in the new meaning, i.e., political-cultural “Wokeness,” i.e., systematic anti-White, anti-Male, anti-Christian attitudes that are so total as to divert the purpose of the State and reshape the meaning of a well-lived life to revolve around fighting Whiteness, which is to say, fighting Evil.)

Google-Trends data for “Wokeism“:

— At zero before June 2020.

— First long peak: April-August 2021

— Second peak: April 2022 (all-time peak)

— Third peak: February to June 2023

(I am arbitrarily defining “peak” here by any months when total-searches were at “50” or above when the all-time-peak month of April 2022 is pegged to “100.”)

What this data means is subject to interpretation. Google-Trends is based on search-quantities.

But in summer and fall 2023, Google-Trends data suggests “Wokeness” as terms are registering at around the low-points seen over the past 2.5 years.

The trends for “Wokeness” are all similar for “Wokeism,” except for two things: (1.) the volume of queries for “Wokeness” is higher across the board, and (2.) the up-trend for “Wokeness” starts distinctly earlier.

The earlier-start for “Wokeness” gives good insights into when this term entered the language, and Steve Sailer fans will not be disappointed to know Sailer was there at the start,

“Wokeness” starts entering the waters in the Google-Trends data in 2016, although the volume of searches is quite low up through late 2018.

As so often happens, Steve Sailer identified the trend at its very cusp, in 2016. The first time the Google-Trends data registers “Wokeness” above the level of “1” on the “peak=100” scale (and “1” can also be noise), is May 2016. The second time was not until March 2017, and it is not consistently at “2” or above until mid-2018. But back in mid-2016, Sailer was doing what he does best in mid-2016 and picked up on the word, although the original meaning was unsettled as yet.

Here are some of Sailer’s earliest uses of the word “Woke”:

(1.) July 2016: “Implicit prejudice is original sin. Everybody is guilty (if they are a cishet white male Republican. But due to intersectionality, you can catch Pokemon Points to stop being guilty by, say, becoming woke and voting for Hillary, who is a woman.)”

(2.) August 2016: Steve Sailer wrote: “David Epstein, the HBD-woke author of The Sports Gene, writes…” (commenter iffen replied: “…’HBD-woke’: Excellent, Steve, way to let the brain snatchers know that you remain unconquered.”)

“HBD-woke” was a nascent Sailerism later totally overwhelmed by the evolution of the word and concept of Wokeness. That Mr. S would use the word in such a way is indicative of how early the word “Woke” was in its growth cycle.

Sailer-in-2016 was using “Woke” there to mean “someone who has insider info and knows the real story of something.” But the Regime and its ideologues have appropriated it to solely mean “people who know the secret truth that White-Christians are ultra-satanically evil and the world’s foremost problem, to be always struggled against, all their many victim-groups should be supported.”

(3.) In early September 2016, Steve Sailer linked to an article by Michael Stutz, titled: “The Alt-Right Is Woke ,” published by right-wing shock-jock Charles Johnson.

Quote, from Michael Stutz, August 25, 2016:

“The alt-right is being demonized massively by a mainstream that doesn’t want it to exist. And that’s exactly the point — so the more that they do it, the more it just helps the cause. The alt-right 2016 is like punk rock 1977: it’s daring, new, socially unacceptable, inevitable, and scaring the crap out of everyone. That a huge chunk of those mainstreamers are utterly stereotypical tatted-up “punks” just ups the irony ante, and increases the troll factor.”

Steve Sailer endorsed this view (“Alt-Right as Alt-Rock,” Sept. 9, 2016). The interesting thing is the title, which included the word “Woke.” The word was still evolving, but Steve Sailer was, by Labor Day 2016, definitely on the wavelength of the new-word “Woke,” which lame-mainstreamers didn’t pick up on for another four years or more.

(4.) October 2016: Sailer title a blog-post “NPR: Information Is Racist, Ignorance Is Woke.”

Some of the Sailer-commenters there, in that October 2016 thread, discussed what “Woke” is supposed to mean. Kyle McKenna wrote: “[‘Woke’ is] an adjective now, of sorts. Implies you wit it.” Opinionator wrote: “[‘Woke’] is an adjective describing a person of color who perceives systemic racism in U.S. institutions, economy, commerce, standards, testing, social arrangements, and sexual relations, and implicit bias in persons of no color.

Sailer used “Woke” many more times in late 2016, 2017, and 2018. But Google-Trends shows that very few general-population Americans were searching queries involving the word “Wokeness” in these years.

Sailer and his readers were ahead of the pack, as usual, and were so far ahead as for the feeling to be a little isolating.

Another case of Sailer being too-far ahead of the pack was when, beginning in mid-late 2013, Sailer began donning his Paul Revere costume to ride through town and yell warnings to loyal townspeople, through many-a night, to the effect that “The Trannies Are Coming.” He was going this by mid-late 2013. He was right, but everyone laughed back then. By the tail-end of the strange decade that was the 2010s, no one was laughing anymore.

Starting in early 2019, Google-Trends data for “Wokeness” begins to show a sustained ascent. This stupid word, Woke(ness) — formerly a niche jargon, akin to “gamer-slang” or something, or the particularly-stupid slang used by Western K-pop fan-communities — was digging in, just as Sailer had implicitly predicted in mid-2016. From its place in the mid-2010s, when it occupied a grimy linguistic-ghetto, to the cusp of major success by 2019.

Yes, the breakout period for “Wokeness” in the Google-Trends data is distinctly 2019, when it finally lifts off the ground-level on the graph, where it had spent all of 2016, 2017, and 2017.

“Wokeness” then broke into the big-leagues, per the Google-Trends dataset, in February 2020, making a leap up from its now-strong late-2019 base. The 2019 consolidation and the sudden February-2020 rise were all pre-George Floyd, of course.

The big spike in February 2020 was also just as the Corona-Panic was coming together. A few months later, the anti-White pogrom of 2020 began in which lockdown-addled pro-Wokeness masses in the USA smashed up the place a bit, egged on by the Regime and in furtherance of Regime goals and ideology.

The exact relationship between the Corona-Panic of early 2020 to early 2022 or so, and the rise of a mutant form of aggressive-Wokeness in 2020 that dug deep and ramped-up existing anti-White discrimination, remains an unsettled question. The two forces seemed to coexist with each other, generally symbiotically. And to see the Google-Trends data showing that the term “Wokeness” broke through (Feb. 2020) in the very-same few-week period that the Corona-Panic broke through (ca. mid-Feb.? to mid-March 2020) seems to corroborate the hypothesis.

What’s tragicomic about the whole thing is, that aspirational nonsense aside, the museum goers will remain, as they ever were, largely White and Asian women. You hear optimists saying all the time that Woke is past its peak. But it sure looks like the Great Awokening still has a ton of institutional momentum as big, slow-moving organizations continue to implement ridiculous policies emanating from the 2020-21 “racial reckoning.”

Level of feminization–how much an institution is full of “the girls with BAs”–will have a strong correlation with institutions just motoring on with woke.

Male institutions, like the NFL have done this as well–the ethnic component (a lot of Jewish owners, majority black players), arrogance and being a monopoly, playing a big role. But in general, I think the more male the institution, the more engaged in producing real goods and the more subject to market forces, the greater the tendency to ease up on the crazy. No one wants to get “Bud Lit”.

My non lawyer take: One way to avoid violating Fair Labor Standards is to normalize volunteers as employees. But if you are going to actually pay these people, I suspect 20 somethings cost less in terms of workers comp and other costs. If you coordinate with their college, the guides will pay for their own training by taking ‘relevant’ college courses. 20 something guides are a more stylish look than ‘little old ladies’, and a stylish look will attract nouveau riche types that have money to donate.

Well, it’s certainly past its stage of novelty and naivete. We are no longer in Faust, Part One where it looks like the deal with the devil may not be so bad after all. The masks are off and the ugly face of Woke is apparent for all to see.

But it is not relevant in this case. There are values attached, i.e., “0” vs. “100” (all-time peak), wherein “1” is a number roundable to 1% of the all-time peak. And these numbers match up well with what is known of the political-history of the word Woke(ness).

The jump in the Google-Trends data for “Wokeness” in February 2020, specifically, is no illusion. It jumps from “6” to “23” in the version I saw. No previous month-on-month jump exceeds such a magnitude, down to the 1%-of-peak resolution scale.

We are left asking which is the more important ascent-period to the success of "Wokeness":

— The rise from 0 to something in the 2016-2017 period;

But if we move there it will be somewhere far from Portland.

I remember visiting the Getty Museum eons ago and being guided by a nice old lady who was a volunteer. I don’t know if it’s still like that.

In Germany apparently one museum even banned white visitors on certain days for a certain exhibition (I think they had to backtrack afterwards).

I also saw a museum in France, or maybe it was also Germany, I forget, where they put new notes in classic art explaining that “this work is racist because…” or “This painting is a dated view of exploration and colonization because…”. It was pretty annoying.

What these idiots don’t seem to understand is that museums are a thing that White People Like (and well, East Asians, and Jews). No Black or Mexican or Arab goes to museums, unless forced by the schools, or exceptionally. But usually they don’t really care.

My late husband took me to Oregon, his home state, in 2003, back when I was clueless politically. (I just assumed after 9/11, Americans would all pull together and Bush would close the borders.) Though I love well-ordered public spaces, I hated Portland on sight. Something about its welcoming greenness was so smug, so off-putting. By the 1990s a form of Wokeness exists and is in power. We are always looking at a moving-target, though, and developments of the 1980s and 1970s also seem important. Wokeness as known/called in the late 2010s and early 2020s is a continuation-ideology, not a suddenly-new ideology.

I think you’re on target with tying Wokeness to the decline of traditional Marxism. But as for the 1990s collapse of Marxism, you refer to the geopolitical collapses of the Marxist states, I think, led by the USSR. But the same process — exiting traditional-Marxism or pro-worker Socialism and moving towards the anti-White hate-ideology of Wokeness — can be traced to the mid-20th century generally. It was being commented upon by puzzled observers as it was ongoing.

It seems the rise of proto-Wokeness was observable enough by “Steve Sailer types” already by about 1970 (though not Sailer himself, then just a boy concerned with toys, comic-books, or baseball-cards). I am sure many of them were hoping what they observed was a fad that would pass.

Meanwhile, political scientists have been puzzled by the supposed mystery of the decline of the long-powerful, long-prestigious Social Democratic parties in Europe. This topic has been debated a lot by academics, who are usually a little hamstrung.

Yep, I know. I’ve traveled around it a bit. I was always told outstate Oregon is conservative but I’m not so sure. Toledo, my husband’s hometown, has a population of only 3000+, is overwhelmingly white, and his family is woke as hell (can’t blame academia, neither parent attended college).

Intellectuals were fervent Marxists but traditional Marxism never captured the emotions and hearts of the middle class. By switching to race and sex issues Marxism can appeal to those emotions, especially among middle class women, and become a faith-based belief system.
People aren’t Christian anymore. That doesn’t mean we’ve entered a post-religion era. Women are leading the way, as they did with Christianity, filling in the blanks with an alternate religion. The need for or appeal of religious faith belief and conformity is very strong. That is another reason this Woke stupidity is not going away.

I suspect you are right. Wokeness does not stop until it is stopped by the people. And Americans are far from getting it at this point.

Protestantism, being unconstrained by traditional creedal or liturgical forms, is dependent on the power of individual personalities to shape the message. The great Protestant clergyman is above all a good speaker and/or a good writer and is able to captivate with his presence. The Protestant ministers of the past were the social media influencers of their day.

Now we have other influencers, but the spirit of old, mainline Protestantism has transferred itself to the new media without missing a beat. This explains both why contemporary Americans prefer to get their theology from TV hostesses, movie stars, and crooners, and why the clergymen of the past embraced the proto-Wokeness of abolitionism and suffrage.

It’s all the same thing, and it points to a Flaw in the American national character and the Enlightenment attitude that wants its religion personal, entertaining, and reformed.

From this heresy have sprung forth numerous ‘world saving’ myths — e.g. from the ‘Social Gospel’ of the late 19th century, to the Wilsonian League of Nations, to neocons ‘spreading democracy’, to today’s Woke ‘saviors’ of the racially and culturally oppressed. It’s all one people assuming they are sufficiently good and powerful to take responsibility for saving other, lesser people from their own fates.

In 1973, I was attending Grant High in Van Nuys, which had a sizable Jewish cohort. The only significant cohort of Jews who switched parties (becoming Republicans, but not conservatives or patriots) were the neo-cons, who as a group are not people who make desirable or trustworthy allies. There are of course individuals like Stephen Miller who do not fit the stereotype. But I remember listening to the Larry Elder show back when Steve Miller was a student at Santa Monica High, and he would call in to describe what he was doing to fight what we would now call wokeism. Many would say there are always alternating relatively-liberal and relatively-conservative movements ongoing in any “religion,” however defined. If all it takes is a sustained period of relatively-liberal religion, and if it be true that we Europeans (or specifically Northwest-Europeans) are particularly vulnerable, we should wonder why aggressive-and-metastatic Wokeness did not emerge a lot earlier.

The biggest single difference, or at least a very-large difference, many would say, is arrival of the emancipated members of a non-European ethnic-group and religion, from Eastern Europe, primarily between the mid-1880s and mid-1910s but also topped-off several times thereafter, and now existing partly as a para-national elite. This group arrived with an aggrieved mentality, with (crucially) a separate intellectual tradition, and armed with elite-diasporic ethics, whereas we White-Protestants were simply who we’ve always been.

Many of the leading Protestants of the late-19th and early 20th century were strongly against that group. The curious person on this point should consult some of the works of Henry Adams, a bonafide member of the elite. He was of age to see the pre- and post-periods of the arrival of the group to which I allude. He and others came to envision that that group would hijack the country. Meanwhile, these same Protestant-elite observers viewed various protean, proto-leftist movements among their own kind with some disdain, sometimes whimsical disdain, and usually a lot less alarm.

I share your views on the Unitarian movement of the 19th century and what it became by the mid-20th century and since, but there were also right-wing unitarians (and right-wing Quakers) and it’s far from clear that they would have forced Wokeness onto White-America without many other changes. I would also note that the Unitarian-Universalist Church of our time is actually heavily composed of people born into that other, above-alluded-to religion.

As I think I noted the last time this came up, this is utter nonsense. “Tikkun Olam” in the modern sense was completely foreign to Jewish Burghers of the Netherlands in the 17th century. The Tikkun Olam that was familiar to those Jews was the mystical concept associated with the Kabbalistic system of Rabbi Isaac Luria which revolved around having the proper intent in prayer and the performance of the commandments. For that matter, I would bet that if one drew a Venn diagram of adherents of Lurianic Kabbala and the investors of the Dutch Indies companies who presumably had close connections with the Puritans, there would be little overlap.

This is a really good point. There is Jewish mythmaking, but they tend to have a much livelier ongoing, intercommunal dialogue and arguments about their past compared to Protestants.

During a college football game last Saturday, I watched a long commercial break of about five commercials. The first four were all exclusively featuring blacks or other people of color. The last ad surprised me because the first ten seconds showed a happy white family engaging in some domestic activity. “What is this?” I thought. And then they introduced the subject of the ad: a bucket of KFC chicken. Of course! It would be racist to have black people in that.

Maybe it could be compared to the witch burnings of Salem. These took place in 1692 so in that sense the Chinese were 3 centuries behind the West. OTOH, only 200 witches were tried in Salem and only 20 witches were executed vs. millions purged in China and a minimum of 1/2 million dead.

There is a book called Red-Color News Soldier which is a chilling photographic record of that time. The author was a news photographer. The book starts out with relatively mild photos of people being humiliated with dunce caps and such and by the end they are executing people. The photographer at some point realized that he would get caught up in the conflagration so he took pains to hide his negatives and at some point years later smuggled them out to the West. I highly recommend this book as a chilling and authentic historical document of what humans are capable of. If humans think they are doing something for a higher cause they are capable of anything.

The typical individual that’s hired to be the manager of American museums these days are so smug and proud because they’re the holders of degrees in black and soap opera studies. The only problem is that they’re too dumb to realize that the demographic that they dream about going to their museums (negroes) don’t go to museums, have no desire to go to museums, and will never be enticed to go to museums, short of having a gun held to their heads.

Getting rid of white docents and putting in displays that don’t appeal to whites is basically the museum committing suicide, because the only people that go to museums are white and maybe orientals to a lesser extent.

Even the most hard core, left-wing politicians aren’t going to continue to fund museums that nobody attends.

They weren’t witch burnings. Witch burnings were related to religious currents. These were political purges of the kind that have recurred throughout Chinese history. Where persecution is concerned, it is better to give than to receive, so many acted before they were acted upon. Ivan the Terrible wants traitors to be put on the pyre, you hand over your local rivals before they give you up. You could strike at Ivan himself, but that would result in almost certain death for you and yours even if you succeeded, and it’s not exactly easy to get close enough – he *is* the Tsar, and well-protected.

Partly it was generational – these kids had missed out on the actual Revolution and all the actual capitalists were gone so they picked the next best thing. Chinese society had ossified a little in the time since the Revolution and unless they shook things up they had little room for advancement otherwise.

Of course, when you roll the dice like this it doesn’t always go well, even for the dice rollers. Eventually the different student groups were fighting each other and in the end they sent most of them to the “countryside” for re-eeducation through labor also.

He was also partial to China’s ethnic minorities in the early days– because they would have an additional reason to hate the establishment, and thus make even better revolutionaries. It helped that those minorities constituted four percent of the population at the time (it’s eight now) and were largely limited to the emptier fringe of the land. No threat to the Han.

On one level it makes sense – you see that your museum is mostly visited by old (white) people and you figure that they are going to die soon, so you had better find a new customer base.

First of all, this is a fallacy. I once spoke to a guy who was an orchestra musician and we had this discussion and he said that he had been a musician for 20 years and the audience was always old people but it wasn’t THE SAME old people. The previous old people would die and be replaced by NEW old people. The 70 year olds from 20 years ago are (mostly) dead but the 50 year olds from 20 years ago are now 70.

2nd, you have the Bud Light problem. If you recall, the white liberal marketing genius lady they had running the brand said that the brand was in decline due to its fratty image so she was going to revitalize it by making the brand appealing to the large and growing transexual customer base (or at least the type of people who admire trannie “influencers”). OK, fair enough (not really) but what if the things that you do to your brand to make it appealing to trannies burn your bridges and ALIENATE your existing frat boy customer base and your new trannie base is not quite in place yet, what happens to your brand then?

The worst aspect of it is that while there may have been one or two authentically significant and talented black artists among the rather small number of blacks who have ever lived in Oregon — it’s perfectly possible — it’s very doubtful that there were sixty nine of them.

I would guess the museum has simply swept up every black artist it could find, regardless of how derivative, amateurish, or just plain mediocre his work.

The result will be that anyone who goes to the exhibit and has eyeballs in his head will be driven inexorably to conclude that black artists are derivative, amateurish, or just plain mediocre.
