Time is always a problem, but all "pet projects" face the same thing, so
it's just a fact of life. I assume I'll have a lot more time this year, as
I think our company is going *puff*. :)

We won't get any kind of users before the thing is playable, that's
absolutely sure. It's a bit of a Catch-22.
What's up with the map editor? I *think* you can get PyQt in woody now,
just apt-get python-pyqt. Seems to be a new version too, so it should
work. After that I think the bang-path may be fubar, but that's just
because the Debian folks can never decide what the python binary should be
called. Apart from that the rest should be pure bugs... The editor does
suck pretty badly, and it's not yet finished (read: usable for a full
scenario), but that kind of work is just so boring to do. Filling in
huge amounts of callbacks for a non-trivial GUI app is simply boring. And
the design sucks too, but I think it can eventually be raw-hacked to do
what needs to be done. Sure, I hate it too.

[this was forwarded on behalf of Mike, who seems to have ISP problems.] Just got back from Christmas, which was good, excepting air travel hassles... :p Well, I'm still very interested, but my time has been very limited over the last six months. It should be better over the next few... My short-term project goal was to harden the turn-control system a bit (to handle various lag and error conditions smoothly), but I don't expect to manage significant work before next week at earliest. Beyond that, what I think is mostly needed now is driven by playtesting/ers. I haven't gotten the map editor working on my box yet, real playable maps would be a key thing now... and users... But yes, things have been quiet, and I can't guarentee I'll have too much more time in the near future than recently. :/ - mikee |

Hi all,
I hope you had a nice Christmas and got lots of nice presents. I had and I
did, so all is well on that front. :)
As for Civil, I see that there has been no CVS commit for about a month
now. Is anybody still interested in developing?

Hi all... Ok, first the news: I'm picking up the keys to my new house on Monday! This means I'll be = offline from this Friday until mid-jan (except the odd "work hours" = IRCing and email collection) so don't expect much to get done by me in = the near future... Secondly, since I'll be offline, I'd like to wish all Civil and EoM = developers and very happy Xmas and New Year. Of course, if you don't = subscribe to Xmas, just enjoy the days off! :-) If you want to get in touch, feel free to send emails as I'm likely to = be hitting cyber-cafes daily until DSL/Phones get installed, it's just a = bit of an arse being Xmas. I doubt an engineer will be out for a while! = ;-) So, here's looking forward to an exciting and productive new year! C U in 2002! G |

Properties.py thinks civil is .50. Are we actually at .60 now? Ooh, and I see we're in Linux Weekly News again! I've been engaged in some Deep Thought about the networking/turn control, and I think the current code is robust (might see some jerkiness on the client on unreliable links?), but am preparing a fashionable paper bag just in case. I have a slightly more complex and smoother scheme in mind, but my first attempt to write it up (before coding) was, ah, incoherent. Time to break out the scratch paper... - mikee |
