If Spotlight works now, it probably won't in the future. Apple is trying to *hide* the ~/Library folder and its contents from users, so it's likely they'll modify Spotlight to hide it as well. To support this assertion, I point out that since the very beginning, Spotlight has not provided content indexing (search for text in content of files) for anything in any of the system directories, including (most stupidly) the entire /Developer hierarchy. Which means that if you want to use Spotlight to search the Apple APIs, you have to make a copy of all the header files and documentation in /Developer into another place, like ~/Developer-for-Spotlight. Totally daft. Tom: > Isn't there a "spotlight" way to do this that is faster? Hmm, maybe. If the goal is to open the folder containing GollyPrefs (so you can drag it somewhere else) then the fastest way I've found is to type GollyPrefs into the Spotlight search box, then select "Show All", then ctrl-click on GollyPrefs and select "Open Enclosing Folder". One problem with this is that Spotlight might find lots of GollyPrefs files (I have 6 in various places) so it might take a moment or two to find the one you really want. All things considered, I think Robert's method is the simplest (if not always the fastest). Andrew |

After four crazy years, I've stalled my cellular automata projects until I can get other demands on my notionally retired time under better control. However, this beta landed at the same moment as the final piece of my 6 yearly computing upgrade, so I figured it warranted some testing, minimal last night but hopefully more in the next few days. But there is already one thing that might deserve attention. By default Golly uses [username]/Library/Application Support/Golly to keep a bunch of things that survive version upgrades. Mountain Lion (at least) has decided to make [username]/Library invisible in Finder. It isn't a simple permissions issue at it has exactly the same permissions as [username]/Applications which is visible, and it is obviously visible through Terminal, but that doesn't make it accessible for various things that Finder has made second nature over many years. In contrast, you can get to [computername]/[drivename]/Library by making [computername] visible in Finer Preferences > Sidebar. [computername] too is invisible by default but I'm guessing that this is Apple's preferred location for such things into the future. Understand this argument may not be the best for computers with multiple users, but I'd expect within Golly users, that is likely a corner case. I just realized. I designed WWEJ3 on a CRT monitor, but on my TFT two of the colors look too much alike. It's about states 9 and 10. On my CRT: 9 = turqoise 10 = sky blue quite different On my TFT: 9 = pastel turqoise 10 = water blue almost the same unless largish areas have a uniform color Do you guys have trouble too in discerning the colors at zoom 1:4? This extra data doesn't hurt performance, but it can be large in filesize, and since end-users don't really have a use for it, it's best to remove it. The easiest way to make sure the binaries are stripped is probably to use "install -s" instead of "cp" when copying them to the temp directory for the bindist target. ("install" is a tool that copies files and marks them executable; the "-s" option tells it to strip them too.) - Maks. |

The GUI in the 64-bit version is really sluggish (to the point of being uncomfortable to use) on my system. The 32-bit version runs smoothly (as does my locally-compiled 64-bit version). Maybe there is something peculiar about the wxWidgets library used on Fedora? What versions did you use? 2. On the other hand, the 32-bit version and my locally compiled version seem to have a bug, where if I draw some garbage, then press "Enter" to start generating, the Stop button doesn't respond at all! In your 64-bit version this is slow (takes about a second to respond) but at least it works. 3. Small detail: the binaries aren't stripped. That's not really a problem, but it makes the distribution about one megabyte larger than it needs to be. - Maks. |

The folder does NOT exist. As I said, the error only appears on first run. Another problem: Most of the included rules have comments in the wrong place. Instead of the comment being in the @RULE section, it's in the @TABLE section and prefixed with hashes. This isn't wrong per se, but doesn't set a good example for future rule makers. Regards, Mark |

That error message is coming from the high-level wxDir code I use to enumerate all files in your rules folder. I can't reproduce the error on my WinXP system using C:\Documents and Settings\Andy\Application Data\Golly\Rules\ as my rules folder, so I'm struggling to see what's going wrong. Some questions: I assume that folder really does exist? I don't know much about Windows but I wonder if it's a permissions problem. Anything unusual about the folder's permission settings? Were you logged in as Administrator or as some other type of user? The only other thing I can think of is if the folder contains an unusual file (maybe a hidden file?). If you have a backup of the original folder could you zip it up and email it to me (or put it on some website if it's really big)? > When I load an old rule (eg. WWEJ3), enable icons and zoom beyond 1:4, > all icons turn white. The color of the state isn't assumed anymore. Yep, I also see that bug (only on Windows -- no such prob on my Mac). I should be able to fix that. > After converting the rules, the icons are still white. I have to > reload the converted rule to make the icons colorful. That's not really a bug. The conversion code doesn't attempt to reload the rule because it shouldn't have to if everything is working correctly. Andrew |

Three (and a half) bugs in >http://www.trevorrow.com/golly/golly-2.5b1-win.zip (for Windows, 32-bit) After running Golly for the first time, when hitting "Convert Old Rules" and confirming delete, I get the error: 11:13:35: Can not enumerate files in directory 'C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Golly\Rules\' (error 3: the system cannot find the path specified.) 11:13:40: Can not enumerate files in directory 'C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Golly\Rules\' (error 3: the system cannot find the path specified.) When I do the same but don't confirm delete, I get the above error once, and no option to save it as a log (no "Details >>" button). When I load an old rule (*eg.* WWEJ3), enable icons and zoom beyond 1:4, all icons turn white. The color of the state isn't assumed anymore. I checked the icons, and there are only grayscale pixels. The color mode of the icons file is 16 color (oops), but after converting to b&w color there was no change. After converting the rules, the icons are still white. I have to reload the converted rule to make the icons colorful. Regards, Mark |

Heh. Now that I've moved on to the Mac, I haven't touched my Windows box in months. I'll boot it and let it update itself this weekend and then do a build if everything still works. It should. -tom On Mon, Mar 25, 2013 at 8:06 PM, Andrew Trevorrow <an...@tr...>wrote: > Golly 2.5b1 builds are available for testing: > > http://www.trevorrow.com/golly/golly-2.5b1-win.zip (for Windows, > 32-bit) > http://www.trevorrow.com/golly/golly-2.5b1-gtk.tar.gz (for Linux, > 32-bit) > http://www.trevorrow.com/golly/golly-2.5b1-gtk64.tar.gz (for Linux, > 64-bit) > http://www.trevorrow.com/golly/golly-2.5b1-mac.zip (for Mac OS 10.6+) > http://www.trevorrow.com/golly/golly-2.5b1-mac104.zip (for Mac OS > 10.4/5) > > I can't build a 64-bit Windows version so could someone (Tom?
