Bill, I'm guessing you're using Mac OS 10.12?  If so then the above error
is due to Apple's new security "feature" known as app translocation
which is performed on applications that are downloaded in zip files.
Just before Golly.app is executed it is copied to a temporary directory,
but none of Golly's supporting folders (like Scripts) are copied, so the
various search paths Golly creates are all broken.

There is an easy way to turn off app translocation.  Quit Golly, start up Terminal.app and enter this command (using your path to Golly.app):

xattr -d com.apple.quarantine path/to/golly-2.9b1-mac/Golly.app

A nicer way to avoid app translocation is to distribute Golly in a
signed dmg file.  I've already done that for the Golly 2.8 distribution
on sourceforge, but I forgot about the 2.9b1 distribution on my website
so I'll create the necessary dmg later today.

PS. If my diagnosis is wrong and the xattr fix doesn't work then
please edit FredkinModN-gen.py and add these lines just before
the first "from glife ... " line:

import sys
golly.note(str(sys.path))

Then send me a screenshot of the result.
