Hi:
After download and install rpms from cacti site i have a stable cacti
server. I wanna backup every night the cacti server to DAT. As far has i
know this can be done in several ways. Shutting down
mysql-server/http-server and backing up to tape or for example, make a
mysql instance dump, and save the export file as part of the filesystem
backup.
Exists any type of instruction to say to cacti cmd.php process not to
be executed for a predefined time or untils i say it 'start again'. This
must be executed externally 'cause the idea is to launch the backup every
night from root crontab.
Any advice/tip will be appreciated :)

I just recently installed v0.8.6c on a SLES9 server. My problem is that I = know I'm going to need to use cactid just from the large number of things = that I'll be graphing. I have a number of data points collected from about 10 different hosts, I would like to combine these into a single graph inside of Cacti. How would I do this? -- -bk ---------------------------------------------------------------- This message was sent using IMP, the Internet Messaging Program. |

I've add a bunch of devices to my system, and slowly I'm adding more and more datapoints for gathering. I've found that new devices follow the Host Template I've made, but all the the existing devices, but now I want to add a Graph (which will automagically create the Data Source) for all the devices. Is there no way to mass add the Graph Templates and Data Sources to a bunch of Devices? The manual adding of the Graph to all the Devices is sooooo time consuming. Just because your views may differ from those of others, I really don't think it's appropriate to start bashing them. They could easily say the same about you, but they choose not to, because they're probably just better people. This is not a flame list, this is a discussion list. We discuss stuff related to Cacti - not our beliefs of other people based on what they might want to see in the future with this product. There's nothing wrong with someone inquiring about a new feature. I see no problem with making this feature modular so that people like you, who might cry themselves to sleep over the situation, don't have to install it. I'm just sorry to say that I don't believe I'm good enough with PHP to make a solid contribution. Sounds simple enough, doesn't it? Thanks -dant |

MySQL 4.x has a safe_mysqld file, but perhaps it was stored in a different location than what you're used to. If you're on a Redhat or Fedora system, the best thing to do would be to look for an init file inside a contrib folder of the source that you had downloaded. If you are using an RPM, suspect a bunk RPM, as this init file should land itself in /etc/rc.d/init.d, and possibly in /etc/rc.d/rcX.d. Before trying to spend your time on getting Cacti to work, spend time getting it's dependencies working, which include MySQL. That's my advice to you. Good luck -dant |

Hi all! I found a weird problem on my BSD box which is 4.11. I started to install the Cacti with all its default packages it needs such as Mysql4.0. But the problem is the Mysql is not working since I can't find the safe_mysqld file to run the Sql daemon. I have tried and test with Mysql 3 but it has the safe_mysqld. I tried to carry on with this version of Mysql but another problem came up. I have followed up all the procedures to start the cacti but when and I didn't find any error message at all during the setup procedures and creating a database for Cacti. But when I point my browser to http://mysite/cacti nothing is there to view. Can any one help me about these two problems? Thank you |

Martin, This all kinda depends. If you want to create graphs from many indexed objects (like interfaces for instance), you'll probably want to create a new xml file defining the objects you want to be able to graph, the index to use, etc. These files reside in <cacti-home-dir>/resource/snmp_queries. If you nose around a bit, I think the format is largely self explanatory, though its also described in the docs under "SNMP Query XML Syntax". Once you've created this, you'll need to add it under the "Data Queries" section of the GUI (again, fairly self explanatory, but also covered in the docs). If there are just a few objects and/or objects that are non-indexed, you probably will just want to create a "Get SNMP Data" data template. This is not quite so self evident, but covered in the docs (and you can always just duplicate one of the exsiting templates and modify what you need. As far as your actual MIB goes, you should be able to simply save it to a location that whatever poller you're going to use can find it. Hope this helps. -=A=- Martin Keding wrote: > I have a number of devices that have their own MIB files. I checked the permissions as follows.=20 ls -ld rra drwxr-xr-x 2 cactiuser users 4096 Jan 25 11:08 rra ls -al total 20 drwxr-xr-x 2 cactiuser users 4096 Jan 25 11:08 . drwxr-xr-x 11 mkeding users 4096 Dec 19 14:01 .. -rw-r--r-- 1 cactiuser users 0 Dec 19 14:01 .placeholder The only other strange thing was that in configuration / settings / = path, my Cactid poller path is blank. This was after the install. Should it be /www/htdocs/cacti ? Martin |

There's a different kind of alerting that can be useful: thresholds. If a given threshold is reached or surpassed (like 95% CPU, or bandwidth use, or high temperature etc.), some kind of warning would be a great help. With a well analyzed baseline and conservatively configured, even with the five min. lag, it would be better to be warned about it than not, IMHO. Alex |

I'll chime in an 'aye' for the opposition. Nagios does monitoring quite well. Big Brother also does it fine (I hear). This isn't a Microsoft product (or emacs) - it doesn't have to do every freaking thing in the universe. It already does what it does quite well. In general, it seems to me that people who wish for one program to also do some completely unrelated thing as well come from a Windoze background. We in Unixland (in general) hate "feature creep"/bloat. Just do one thing well. I have already written a wonderful script to do exactly this in Nagios. My script happens to pull info from mrtg to do bandwidth percentage thresholds, but it would be trivial to hack it to instead take arbitrary values as warning/critical thresholds. (I hacked some tight MRTG integration into our cacti setup here, so it is related closely to that. Still, the method by which values are pulled from .rrd files is the same no matter what's generating them.) > I'm up to my eyeballs in other projects at the moment, but if there > are PHP coders on this list who are interested in this (or have > already done it!!), please share. I've seen a lot of people who don't want it, but also, a lot of people that do. And I understand their concerns over with this being implemented, Cacti becoming another piece of bloated software, which no one wants. However... I'm sure a modular system could be worked out - so if you don't want it, don't install it. Another thing to think about, however, is that a 5 minute polling time to see if a host is down is, in my oppinion, way too long. So if this is made, it should be used carefully, and people need to understand that the host will only be checked every 5 minutes. I'm sure people have (and can) modified this in the past, but most of the people using Cacti wouldn't know how to make this change. Just my $0.02, hope it helps! -dant |

I'm using Fedora Core 2 and apt-get. Seems that some builds of latest rrdtool and php-rrdtool packages prevents to rrdtool to be used with php. If your cacti environment seems to not graph any more, and your GNU/Linux distro is based on apt-get/rpm package manager, check the versions of both packets rrdtool and php-rrdtool. I had latest version at Jan-2005 "[root@CACTI root]# rpm -qa | grep rrdtool php-rrdtool-1.0.49-1.1.fc2.fr rrdtool-1.0.49-1.1.fc2.fr " At least this versions may be the problem. When this occurs, login as cacti owner execute the poller, exactly as defined in root crontab "[cactiuser@CACTI cacti]$ /usr/bin/php /var/www/cacti/poller.php PHP Warning: Unknown(): Invalid library (maybe not a PHP library) 'rrdtool.so' in Unknown on line 0 Content-type: text/html X-Powered-By: PHP/4.3.10 (...) " This happened to me some days before. Googling and reading a lot i saw some people with same problem in the past http://lists.freshrpms.net/pipermail/freshrpms-list/2004-July/010146.html Thinking about it ( trust it, sometimes i think ;) ), i decided to install previous rrdtool and php-rrdtool from a known repository " [root@CACTI root]# wget http://dag.wieers.com/packages/rrdtool/rrdtool-1.0.48-1.1.fc2.dag.i386.rpm [root@CACTI root]# wget http://dag.wieers.com/packages/rrdtool/php-rrdtool-1.0.48-1.1.fc2.dag.i386.rpm " Then installed them "[root@CACTI root]# rpm -i --replacepkgs --replacefiles --oldpackage rrdtool-1.0.48-1.1.fc2.dag.i386.rpm php-rrdtool-1.0.48-1.1.fc2.dag.i386.rpm warning: rrdtool-1.0.48-1.1.fc2.dag.i386.rpm: V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 6b8d79e6 [root@CACTI root]# rpm -qa | grep rrdtool php-rrdtool-1.0.49-1.1.fc2.fr php-rrdtool-1.0.48-1.1.fc2.dag rrdtool-1.0.49-1.1.fc2.fr rrdtool-1.0.48-1.1.fc2.dag [root@CACTI root]# rpm -e php-rrdtool-1.0.49-1.1.fc2.fr [root@CACTI root]# rpm -e rrdtool-1.0.49-1.1.fc2.fr [root@CACTI root]# rpm -qa | grep rrdtool php-rrdtool-1.0.48-1.1.fc2.dag rrdtool-1.0.48-1.1.fc2.dag " And then executing again the poller script "[cactiuser@CACTI cacti]$ /usr/bin/php /var/www/cacti/poller.php Content-type: text/html X-Powered-By: PHP/4.3.10 #!/usr/bin/php -q " At least no more error mesages, and rrdtool check in cacti says : OK. Martin,
Here's a response to this same question I got a while back from Ian
Berry (main author of Cacti):
"The intended fix behind the changes in lib/snmp.php between 0.8.6 and
0.8.6b were intended to correct a problem similar to what you are
experiencing. The problem occurred for cactid users that relied on
PHP-SNMP for SNMP support from the web interface which does not support
SNMP v2. When one of these users created an SNMP v2 device it would
result in the same problem that you are experiencing."
Hope that helps explain it.
