With Ta-Nehisi Coates back in the news, it’s fun to recount one of the two main anecdotes he recounted in his colossally lauded 2015 bestseller Between the World and Me, which is written as a letter to his son:
Perhaps you remember that time we went to see Howl’s Moving Castle on the Upper West Side. You were almost five years old. The theater was crowded, and when we came out we rode a set of escalators down to the ground floor. As we came off, you were moving at the dawdling speed of a small child. A white woman pushed you and said, “Come on!” Many things now happened at once. There was the reaction of any parent when a stranger lays a hand on the body of his or her child. And there was my own insecurity in my ability to protect your black body. And more: There was my sense that this woman was pulling rank. I knew, for instance, that she would not have pushed a black child out on my part of Flatbush, because she would be afraid there and would sense, if not know, that there would be a penalty for such an action. But I was not out on my part of Flatbush. And I was not in West Baltimore. And I was far from The Mecca [Kamala’s Howard U., from which Coates dropped out]. I forgot all of that. I was only aware that someone had invoked their right over the body of my son. I turned and spoke to this woman, and my words were hot with all of the moment and all of my history. She shrunk back, shocked. A white man standing nearby spoke up in her defense. I experienced this as his attempt to rescue the damsel from the beast. He had made no such attempt on behalf of my son. And he was now supported by other white people in the assembling crowd. The man came closer. He grew louder. I pushed him away. He said, “I could have you arrested!” I did not care. I told him this, and the desire to do much more was hot in my throat. This desire was only controllable because I remembered someone standing off to the side there, bearing witness to more fury than he had ever seen from me-you.
Obviously, the pushy Upper West Side Karen is Elaine Benes.

Of course now that THC is discussing other people (e.g. Jews), will his book start to see a precipitous drop in purchases? After all, it cannot be permitted for impressionable minds to become exposed to ideas that are deigned to be outside the mainstream.

So the facts are buried under the overhyped world of "best sellers." "Best Seller" is a tattered lie which few believe and no one can document.

Any college class that has one of Ta-Nehisi Coates’ books as required reading is a waste of time, “education,” and money. You’d be far better off using that time watching YouTube videos on how to fix your toilet.
The success of Coates was related to the rise of woke leftism. The older labor union type of leftism was workers versus capitalists and was focused on getting increased pay for those workers. The new leftism is a horse of a different color. It combines anti-white racism with anti-male attitudes.

Coates openly admits that he blames every ill of black people on racism, so he can’t deal with Jews somehow being able to overcome it and blacks somehow not.

In the late-90s/early-00s, my local uni library made space for more computer terminals by reducing their stacks (by throwing decades-old hard-bound books into the trash), which makes women not only the majority book-buyers but the majority book-burners, which seems about right.
You're lucky. My local library threw out most of the books in order to make space for... Muslim and Latino toddlers. It's basically a free day-care center now, with the word "nursery" mis-spelled as "library", with books (none in English) used basically for the occasional decoration.
It is normal–and good–for parents to be protective of their children. And I certainly want to live in society that is “child tolerant”. I.e. where the adults both look out for children and make suitable allowances for children being children and ergo making it easier for parents to have children and have more children.
That said simply “putting your hands” on someone else’s child is not that odd in these situations. In Florida, AnotherMom and I walk the beach more or less daily. During the winter we old folks rule and things are pretty uncrowded. But later in the spring when the families show up there are often kids who are running around not paying attention who attempt to smack right into us. Normally I avoid that with a quick stop or step out of the way–which sometimes elicits an apology from a nearby mom or admonition to their child (usually their son) to look where he is going. But a time or two a year, I have to actually lay a gentle hand on the boy and steer him away from smacking right into us.
My guess would be that the “push” here, was not “Elaine” shoving the kid, but more “herding” him off the escalator. And that the escalation was because Coates instead of saying “come on son, you can’t block other peoples’ path”, got pissy–and “black”–with the woman. My guess is if there was video, most people would find Coates the clear offender. Even those of us who are parents and want a very “child-centric” society, also expect that parents will be adequately controlling/policing their children in those situations–not in my beach scenario above where I expect kids to be running around wildly, but where they would be impeding other people, and especially so where they would be endangering others, like blocking exit from an escalator.
Mostly what his own anecdote indicates is that Coates lacks the mentality–understanding, attitudes and discipline of mind–to properly navigate civilized life smoothly. Which seems to be true of a whole lot of blacks, and sadly a growing number of whites and others as well.

Obviously this is just an educated guess, but I would go even farther and suggest that the “shove” of Coates’s son could have been motivated in part for his own safety. If someone does not move off an escalator, he risks being trampled. When I was a kid, there was a fatal accident at the old Baltimore Memorial Stadium caused by exactly that. IIRC, it was “Safety Patrol Day” in May 1964, with large numbers of kids given free passes to attend an Orioles game.

I would never touch someone else’s kid. People are rightly sensitive about such things. And it can be quite scary for the kid— from my childhood I can remember incidents of fairly innocuous physical contact from complete strangers that still freak me out to this day. No I’m not autistic. OK maybe a little bit.
If a child’s acting up you gotta find the parent and failing that, “use your words” as they presumably still tell preschoolers.

It was one of three things. It could have been as you described, with a huge overreaction from Coates. Or Coates could have made up the entire event. Or maybe his kid was being a real pain in the ass and someone finally spoke sharply to him. But what didn’t happen is this: A kid behaving in a normal childlike manner was brusquely shoved aside by an agitated white woman. Because white people don’t do that.

MOORHEAD (KFGO) – Charges have been upgraded against the man accused of killing a 14-year-old girl and leaving her body near the Red River in Moorhead in August.
A Clay County grand jury has indicted 18-year-old Isaac Arndt for premeditated first degree murder and second degree murder with intent for the stabbing death of Jaelyn Walker of Moorhead.
Arndt initially claimed he and Walker were followed in Gooseberry Park, but later admitted to stabbing Walker, cutting her throat, giving her a hug, and then stabbing her one more time in the back before dragging her body to the river and leaving the scene.
Walker’s body was found later that day.
Bail has been set at $4 million with no conditions or $2 million with conditions.
Arndt’s next court appearance is Nov. 7.

Yet again the Middle East is on the brink of all out war and both Britain and America have troops in the region on standby. We say ‘No British Blood for Israel’. Britain should NOT be spending £billions on conflicts in the Middle East which are of no benefit to our people – especially when there have been so many damaging cuts here at home!
What’s more, the UN have already reported that over one million people have fled from their homes in Lebanon. This represents another threat to Europe, as many will no doubt choose to make their way here in order to seek asylum. The fact is, British troops are needed here, protecting our Southern border and preventing the influx of illegal migrants pouring over the English Channel. On Saturday, activists from the North West and Yorkshire were joined by Mark Collett in Castleford for a banner drop and protest outside of Yvette Cooper’s constituency office. The group were met with supportive beeps from passing motorists and Mark Collett gave a speech which can be seen on PAtv! The protest was held against Labour’s open door migration system.

What's more, the UN have already reported that over one million people have fled from their homes in Lebanon. This represents another threat to Europe, as many will no doubt choose to make their way here in order to seek asylum. Our borders should be secured and we should make it clear, that Britain does not have any obligation to house the world!
The fact is, British troops are needed here, protecting our Southern border and preventing the influx of illegal migrants pouring over the English Channel. We must also prioritise our own people - if Labour have the money to deploy troops in the Middle East, then they shouldn't be cutting winter fuel payments for British pensioners!
Most so-called 'nationalist' groups and parties will not dare to address this pressing issue, however Patriotic Alternative will always bravely stand up for British interests and oppose the needless foreign wars that have done nothing but damage the UK. Last weekend saw PA activism take place in London, the South East, the South West, the East and West Midlands, Yorkshire, the North West, Wales and Eastern England! That's a lot of activity; from banner drops and protests to social gatherings and fitness events, last weekend's activity showcased just how busy we are and what a range of activities we are involved in.
On Saturday, activists from the North West and Yorkshire were joined by Mark Collett in Castleford for a banner drop and protest outside of Yvette Cooper's constituency office. The group were met with supportive beeps from passing motorists and Mark Collett gave a speech which can be seen on PAtv! The protest was held against Labour's open door migration system.

In the East Mids, West Mids and Wales, banner drops and speeches were made, in London, the South East and the South West social events took place whilst members in Eastern and the North West took part fitness events. A Clay County grand jury has indicted 18-year-old Isaac Arndt for premeditated first degree murder and second degree murder with intent for the stabbing death of Jaelyn Walker of Moorhead.
Arndt initially claimed he and Walker were followed in Gooseberry Park, but later admitted to stabbing Walker, cutting her throat, giving her a hug, and then stabbing her one more time in the back before dragging her body to the river and leaving the scene.
Walker’s body was found later that day.
Bail has been set at $4 million with no conditions or $2 million with conditions.
Arndt’s next court appearance is Nov. 7.

People stop at the end of an escalator every day and it irritates people every day. One should stop trying to twist the story or intentionally misunderstand the story to make a point.
It has happened thousands of times all over the world. But in America this interaction is viewed through the prism of race, and the child’s angry father turns the incident into a best-selling book in which he is the hero.
It was even assigned by Robert McCall to his protégé Miles Whittaker in Equalizer 2 (2018). The scriptwriters did not care that this was a poor fit to McCall’s character and his relationship with Whittaker. A book emphasising personal responsibility by somebody like Thomas Sowell would have been a lot more credible.
That said simply "putting your hands" on someone else's child is not that odd in these situations. In Florida, AnotherMom and I walk the beach more or less daily. During the winter we old folks rule and things are pretty uncrowded. But later in the spring when the families show up there are often kids who are running around not paying attention who attempt to smack right into us. Normally I avoid that with a quick stop or step out of the way--which sometimes elicits an apology from a nearby mom or admonition to their child (usually their son) to look where he is going. But a time or two a year, I have to actually lay a gentle hand on the boy and steer him away from smacking right into us.
My guess would be that the "push" here, was not "Elaine" shoving the kid, but more "herding" him off the escalator. And that the escalation was because Coates instead of saying "come on son, you can't block other peoples' path", got pissy--and "black"--with the woman. My guess is if there was video, most people would find Coates the clear offender. Even those of us who are parents and want a very "child-centric" society, also expect that parents will be adequately controlling/policing their children in those situations--not in my beach scenario above where I expect kids to be running around wildly, but where they would be impeding other people, and especially so where they would be endangering others, like blocking exit from an escalator.
Mostly what his own anecdote indicates is that Coates lacks the mentality--understanding, attitudes and discipline of mind--to properly navigate civilized life smoothly. Create another email account, just for Substack name purposes. It will also send you emails if someone likes or replies to a comment of yours (you can likely turn that off).
When you are at the top or bottom of a moving escalator you are propelled forward. So a small child or anyone else would have to make an effort to stop and block those behind them. Otherwise momentum will move you along and away.
This might happen but it is rather dangerous to those behind as they pile up and people then crash into them.
It isn't a matter of hostility or bulling, just safety.
If TNC isn't teaching his kid to ride an escalator safely what does he expect? I've seen adults do this at very crowded escalators in busy Paris department stores, where shoppers stop and look around, jamming up knots of people behind them. Even adults fail to appreciate those behind them.

I don’t follow Canadian politics very closely. Do you see Trudeau as on his way out? I find the open borders Canada immigration policy to be very dismaying.
