On Tour to the Frituur 20: Nato's in Merksem

The regular frituur we go to when at my mom's was on holiday, so I took the opportunity to visit a place I hadn't before, Nato's.

Located on the Laarsebaan in Merksem, it has been there for a few years now, but I never got round to stepping inside before.

The place is really spacey, with ample seating places provided.  It has a large selection of the usual snacks, as well as vegan and halal options for those that prefer those.
Behind the corner was a very friendly young lady, and during the weekends they also provide delivery at home.

Our order

Well, it was a family dinner, so it was quite a big order including two pots of beef stew, which was excellent.  The cervela sausage was a bit on the dry side, but the fries where baked just as they should be, nothing bad, nothing stand out, just plain solid as the art describes.  Some more additional snacks where in the order, for a total of 32.00 euro in the end.

Pricewise, this is just "the prices" as they are in about every frituur here in the northern Antwerp region, so that is a-okay in my book.

Conclusion

Excellent beef stew and well baked fries, what more can one wish for after all.  So that means I'm going to rate it a lovely 7.5 out of 10, it's worth a visit if you are nearby, though parking might be a thing.  Local guide tip: park across the crossroads at the side of the Albert Heijn, it's closed on sunday afternoons anyways, and face it, sunday is friesday!

Now to our next discovery, as I still have a few months to find the remaining 2 places for this year's goal!

Food Wars volume 10 - Yuto Tsukuda and Shun Saeki

It's cooking time with the next volume in the fun Food Wars series!

And this time, it starts with the conclusion of the quarterfinal by the Master of Spices, who beats his opponent and advances.

So that means the main part of the volume will tackle the fourth and final quarterfinal, between the eldest of the Aldini brothers and Mimasaka, who tries to get under his opponent's skin by insulting his younger brother.  They agree on making it a Shokugeki, putting Aldini's knife on the line.  Mimasaka turns out to be a trash character, caring only about winning, but Aldini gets back at him by engaging the "duello" etiquette.  If he wins, he will have Mimasaka bend the knee and publically apologise.

But Mimasaka has stalked Aldini for weeks, copying his recipy and adding some of his own variations, and Aldini suddenly gets an idea to add something extra to his recipy, using his special olive oil he always keeps with him for luck.  Inventing a new flavour of lemon curd on the spot, this has never the less been countered by Mimasaka even before he thought it up.  As a result, he beats Aldini, taking his knife from him in what turns out to be his 100th Shokugeki victory.

Soma and Mimasaka have a talk, as they will face each other in the semi-finals.  Mimasaka proposes a new Shokugeki, but to the dismay of his friends Soma raises the stakes astronomically,  putting his future as a cook on the line against Mimasaka having to return all 100 knives.  He then even tells him what he will be making, as Mimasaka would find out soon anyways by his stalking behaviour.

In the meantime, a young student from the journalism course joins Soma, wanting to put him in the spotlight as he is considered the underdog against Mimasaka, and they go visit Erina to taste his dishes...

So the contest is heating up, and while we know Soma will win as there are still 20+ volumes in the series to go, it'll be fun to find out just it will pan out exactly.

On Tour to the Frituur 19: de Kloosterhoeve in Arcen

So recently we went on a vacation to Resort Klein Vink in Arcen, the Netherlands.

And of course, that gave an opportunity to discover a frituur in the region!

This was part of the regional family restaurant, de Kloosterhoeve, which is situated at, but not exclusively for, the Arcen Roompot park Klein Vink, and has a frituur / snackbar for take-out.  Now as we went there on the first day we arrived, like many on the park, on the friday evening, it was very busy indeed.  The interior has seating spots, but these where mostly occupied by park visitors awaiting their orders to be prepared, so we had a seating outside the place on it's big open area.  While this is handy, I imagine the busy insides should it be rainy weather and not 29 degrees when we went.

It has a rather limited menu, but it does have all the essentials (and in addition, also sells pizza) at prices comparable to any regular place, so no mark up for being at a vacation park which is a nice thing.

My Order

We ordered a huge family pack of fries, which was a real mountain in that we might have better taken a size smaller.  Luckily Thorin can put away some good amounts.  Alongside we took a currywirst (Frikandel) for the little guy, a bamischijf and a cheese soufle for Noshi and I took what they called a "spicy meat snack" but we know as a Mexicano, and a Berepoot which comes with satesaus (a peanut based thick creamy sauce) standard here.  Rounding out, some cold sauces and we where set for 29 euro, so as I said not a big mark-up at all.

The fries where nicely baked, and of the variety with some of the peel still on it, making them extra tasty.  Nothing bad can be said of the meat snacks either, they know how to put it all in the fryer and don't mess it up.

Conclusion

A good place, nothing to fancy though I love the satesaus on the berepoot, and not super expensive or the likes, just your regular place.  Only the seatings might be an issue if the weather ir rainy, but as we didn't see a single drop during the whole holiday, I'm not going to take this into account, and rate it the baseline 7 out of 10 as such.  It gets some bonus for the excellent fries, but loses some for the very limited menu of only 8 different snacks...

But for a vacation park bordering place, it definitly was worth it...

On Tour to the Frituur 18: Fritaurant in Merksem

What better after a large tournament then some fries?

Indeed, nothing, so I went to a new place in Merksem in my next tour stop, Fritaurant located at the Frans Adriaensensstraat 2 in 2170 Merksem.

Now this a very modern interior designed place, and this in some way has a weird streak for a traditional mind as mine.  Unlike most frituur's, the place doesn't have a glass cabinet showing all or at least most of the snacks, only having large and very varied menu cards on the walls.  Now to be honest, this sort of causes a short circuit, and not only with me, as I often don't know what to take unless I "see" it lying in front.

It also has some frituur classics, like a Julienneke or a Romboutteke, which are loaded fries avant la lettre, and they have a whole lot of home made items like beef stew, chicken stew and more... The place is ran by a young couple, and they do seem to know their business as waiting lines progressed smoothly on a sunday evening.

It also has spacious seating space to enjoy your food, seperated by a low wall from the waiting line for take out orders.

My Order

I went for a Julienneke, which are fries topped with beef stew sauce, onion, mayonaise, and pieces of viandel, a Bicky cheese burger and a can of coca cola, putting me back 19.60 euro (the Julienneke or other loaded fries dishes are 11.50 each, a fair price).  The fries where nice and crispy, perfectly baked

Conclusion

It is modern, it is clean, but as I said, the lack of a glass cabinet is an odd concept for me.  While the speciality dishes are great additions to the menu, the regular snacks and fries are your pretty normal priced ranges, so even with it's modern touch it handles classic prices.

While the food was delicious, and this certainly adds to the rating, the lack of cabinet causes me to knock off a point, ending with a final rating of a well deserved 7.5 out of 10 for me.

On Tour to the Frituur 17: Ijsmanneke in Kasterlee

This was a bit of a nostalgia trip for me, as I used to go here all the time when I was just a wee lad and was spending half my life in Kasterlee.

And when we recently went back for a small holiday with little Thorin, it was more then normal to visit it and go get some fries!

Located on the Geelsebaan 21 in 2460 Kasterlee, the place is now run by a friendly family of chinese people.  They have a very wide selection of snacks and burgers, amongst them some specialties like "Riche" saus, a tartare with red beet in it.

The place also has a spacious seating area for in-house degustation, and a seperate seating area for those waiting on the take-out orders, with entrance and exit being in different places to prevent a constant traffic coming by as you eat there, which is excellent.

Our Order

As it was a take-away for the whole family, we went for a family pack, which turned out to be truly huge.  Perhaps one small point of critique is that they don't have something between a large pack and the family pack, a thing common here in the city.  For the rest we had some Playboy smoked sausages, curryworst, curryworst XXL, the new Belcrunch snack (I like this thing) and bitterballs.  All rounded out with a large pot of cold curry sauce, and this cost us 35.00 euro, a very decent price.

Conclusion

Like is often the case with the chinese ran places, everything was baked perfectly "dry", basically meaning no grease dripping off them.  The same goes for the meat snacks, and the Playboy's where still a lovely pink inside, so made to perfection.

While it gets some up's pure of nostalgia value, there isn't anyhting bad I can't say about the place except the above mentioned size option.  But that actually comes only into play if you are with 3, or 4 small eaters, otherwise the protions of fries are more then royal.  To that end I'm giving them a solid 8 out of 10, there just is nothing wrong with this place...

On Tour to the Frituur 16: Frituur Den Dubbel in Deurne

Okay, so a bit of a special episode today, as I never actually physically been to this place.

But hear me out, as this is my regular Take Away spot at work.

Located on the Boterlaarbaan 94 in Deurne, right around the corner of the hospital I work, I often order there during the night shifts.  And as we all know, the Take Away site gives a timer of delivery.
Now, in my case, divide that timer easily by three, because the owner, a very jolly and fun fellow, appreciate the work we do so hard.  He thinks that people working in the medical sector should get absolute priority, so he always delivers these orders first before the others.

 My order

Well, you have to order for a minimal 17.00 euro for it to be delivered, and that usualy means I take one of the Bicky Burger menu's, supplemented by a Boulet Speciaal  (a meatball in mayonaise, ketchup and raw onion) and a little sauce for the fries, usually Andalouse (spicy) or Joppie (sweet).

The fries are always well baked, and due to the short distance nice and warm still.  The boulet never has any issues either, and a Bicky Burger is that, a Bicky Burger!

Conclusion

The frituur deliveries are greatly on time, nice and warm, and never anything to complain about.  So I would normally rate it at 7 out of 10, but due to the excellent service benefit, I am giving this frituur a well deserved 8 out of 10!

Now to journey to the next place for fries... but also one day to visit it actually for a "redux" in-house visit!

On Tour to the Frituur 15: Frituur no 1 in Antwerp

Perhaps the most legenday frituur in the whole of Antwerp by reputation, Firtuur no 1 is an icon.

But is it also any good?  Well, that is something I went and found out...

Located at the Hoogstraat number 1 in Antwerp's historical city centre, it is also a legend with Maria, the lady behind the counter.  While it doesn't have a website, a quick google will find you a lot of articles both about the frituur as well as about Maria.

The selection is on par (their beefstew, while not in this test, is really delicious) and there is more then ample seating with two dining rooms.

My order

I ordered a small fries with spices, a berepoot and tartare sauce, the regular in other words in this test series.  Now, the tartare isn't fresh made, and instead of coming in a small pot, is put directly on the fries, which I'm not to much a fan off as I can't dip the meat in it then.  Also, in all the fun talks, they did mix the order up, and I ended with Joppie instead of tartare on the fries.  The fries itself where perfectly bakes, as was the berepoot, but the place does know it's prices, knocking me back 10.40 euro.  This as such is the first time in the series a nice pink eurobill wasn't sufficient for a lunch.

Conclusion

While the food is perfectly fine, the prices are on the more expensive side.  As you can scroll back in the series, there are two other rather famous Antwerp places (Fritkot Max and Frituur 't Stad) who offer the same quality, yet where more then a full euro cheaper and had fresh tartare.

For that reason, I can't score the icon unfortunatly higher then a 6 out of 10.  It has atmosphere, it has taste, but it also has a steep price at 1.20 euro for a pumping of sauce for example.

On Tour to the Frituur 14: Frituur 't Pleintje in Adinkerke

After a very fun day in Plopsaland De Panne, the report which could be read here a few weeks ago, we did need to charge the electric car in order to get home.

And grabbing fries for dinner while the car charged, we struck two birds with one stone...

Located nearby the amusement park, in the village of Adinkerke, is frituur 't Pleintje, a barack style building with a small yet cosy seating area.  We had found it by googling to nearby charging pole's, so a short 7 minute walk later, the family sat down to order.

While the owner might not have the multi-tasking speed of the typical big city places, it didn't take to long for our order to be prepared, and it was nice and busy in the place.  Guess it must be the most popular place of the small communal village.

My Order

I ordered of course fries, accompanied by fresh tartare saus, a cervela (called "look worst" in this side of Belgium) and a Bicky Burger.  The fries where baked nicely dry and crisp, the sausage was an excellent moist pink still inside and the tartare sauce was nice and refreshing.   Nothing at all wrong with this order as such I must say.  They also had a wide assortment of homemade Burgers, wraps and loaded fries, but I didn't try those out, yet was amazed by the size of their menu card.

My part of the bill for all this was 12.70 euro, so that is also in line with what most places charge for this amount of fries and snacks, so that was nicely on point as well.

Conclusion

To be honest, I can't say anything negative at all for this place.  It is what it is, a decent, on point little frituur found in a corner of Belgium.  Definitly worth to pass by if you've been to the Plopsaland park and want to make a very short detour on the road home for some fries.

As such, I'm rating it with a solid 7.5 score, because as I said, it is just perfectly what you expect from this sort of small local places.

On Tour to the Frituur 13: Don Potatoes in Wijnegem

It was a wet and cold winter's day, when I wandered the streets of Wijnegem (okay, I had to drop something of at the MR point there), when the smell of fries filled my nostrils.

And following my nose, it brought me to Don Potatoes in Wijnegem, located on the mainstreet near the market.

The owners are chinese, so I knew the fries would be well baked, as they all seem to have mastered the art of the non-greasy, dry baking style.  I went in, and placed my order as such with the friendly lady at the counter, while her husband toiled away baking fries.

It has a wide selection of snacks, and a very ample sitting room to consume your food, making use of those electronic beepers to indicate when your meal is ready for collection.

My Order

I went for the usual to start out, being a small fries with spices and fresh tartare sauce, together with a berepoot.  But I also took a curryworst special (I had asked a cervela but it seems she misheard), which is mayonaisse, ketchup and fresh onion sauce, and a can of coke.  All this put me back 13.00 euro, which are the regular prices all around here for that size of order.

The fries where baked just fine, but the spices (or salt if you prefer) are to be added yourself, and the pot was empty.  I didn't ask for a refill, for no other reason then that I was to lazy, so nothing against that for the matter.  The meat was also baked fine, though I can't seem to find another place like my homestretch frituur where they actually put a whole onion in a berepoot, being some slices here instead.

Conclusion

Nothing wrong to say about this place, but I must say also nothing spectacular standing out.  It is just a decent place, good food, normal prizes, ample seating... just how it all should be, no more, no less and as such I will give it a decent 7.5 score.

A fine spot to drop by as such, though on the midday hour it might get busy with a big school almost right next door, so keep that in mind for a quick lunch!

On Tour to the Frituur 12: 't Draakske in Deurne

Time for another visit to a fresh place and enjoy the number 1 Belgian fastfood: fries!

And this time my journey brought me to Frituur 't Draakske (little dragon if translated), located here in Deurne, Antwerp.

It doesn't have a website though, but it's adress is Frans van Heymbeeckstraat 20, 2100 Deurne.  The place is spacious, with ample seating for eating in, and run by a middle-aged chinese couple.  It's clean and the furniture is well placed in order to not be in the way for the ordering line on busy moments.  I went there on a monday evening, and it was a constant coming and going of customers.

My order

Staying with the regulars, as I didn't immediatly spotted something "stand out" on their extensive menu card, I took a medium fries with spices, a berepoot also with spices, and a pot of fresh tartare saus.  All combined with a fresh coke, as I was thirsty as hell when I got there, having been shuffling in traffic all around the city for 2 hours.  This all put me back a very descent 9.50 euro.

The fries where baked nice and dry, and the berepoot was excellent.  Enough onion, and no grese on the meat at all.  The sauce was also nice and fresh, as if it stands to long it can have that thin "skin" on it, which wasn't the case here, and sufficient to dip my fries in.

Conclusion

A very good place, nothing really to say about it that isn't positive, and as such I'm rating it a hefty 8.5 and definitly one to visit if you want to sit in and eat calmly.  We Belgians do have a take-out culture for fries, but sometimes, you just want to sit down and eat after all.

Definitly recommended for the first new discovered place for this year!

On Tour to the Frituur 11: La Patata in Deurne

Whenever our regular fries place is closed for holidays, I have to go two streets further to La Patata, located on the Schotensteenweg in Deurne.

Ran by a friendly chinese family, they do sport a bit of a smaller selection in snacks then most other places, but that is not necessarily a bad thing of course.

So beginning of november (hello, backlog) on a rainy evening, I made the journey there for the family dinner... La Patata doesn't feature an eat-in area, being only take out though, for that might be less intresting for those passing by and wanting to sit down for a quick snack.

Our order

First of all of course, fries.  A large one with spices, and then the necessary added snacks in the form of a curryworst for Thorin, a berepoot and a spicy viandel for me and Noshi taking a bamiblock and a mexicano.

The total order came to 20.30 euro as such.  Now, the fries where well baked, but the snacks are just that little bit harder baked then at most places.  For some snacks, like the viandel and the mexicano, that is actually a good thing, but I like my berepoot "pinkish" in the middle.  Guess that is mostly something of personal taste though.  The fries where crispy and nicely dry, and nothing was covered in grease as sometimes happens at other places, as you could have already read in my previous reports.

Conclusion

Personally, it is always that one little step behind my regular place, but it isn't a bad frituur at all.  As such I will rate it with a 6.5 out of 10, the main gripes are my personal taste of not baked so hard berepoot, and the fact one can't have a sit down for a quick bite.

But, as I said, if you like it all a bit harder baked, it would probably notch up an extra point for your personal tastes.

On Tour to the Frituur 10: Frituur 'T Stad in Antwerp

Another Antwerp classic, Frituur 't Stad, located on the Melkmarkt, is well known to the locals.

Not only due to it's opening hours, from before noon until deep into the night, but just for the ambient atmosphere that can be often found there, located amongst a heap of popular bars.

So during a cold but dry autumn walk, I popped by the place around lunchtime, and subjected it to my taste test!

The venue is clean and spacious, with some great art at the backwall, but also ample seating for eating in.  It also has some benches and tables outside on the streetside for that late night snack while catching some fresh air to fight the alcohol cloud forming in your head.  Service is friendly, and if you understand Antwerp dialect and humour, some additional layer is added to the experience.

My Order

Not having any real specialty snacks, I went for the regular order when I try these places out.  A small fries with spices, fresh made tartare saus and a Berepoot, which is a meatball sliced up and intersected with slices of onion.

The fries where perfectly baked, and the fresh tartare sauce was delicious.  However, the berepoot was just a tat to greasy for my liking, and at some frituurs they put a full onion in, this one just had some slices.  It was baked to perfection though, so no complaints there.

I paid 8.40 euro for this order, which is, considering the location, not that much at all I must honestly say.

Conclusion

Like Frituur Max in the previous episode, this is another Antwerp icon that lives up to it's name.  Prices are fair, the food was more then okay, and the place is definitly NOT a tourist trap.  Due to the greasy berepoot, I am giving it a little bit less then Frituur Max, but still a highly rated 7.5 out of 10.

So go enjoy the music in The Muze down the street, and then round out with some excellent fries, and you'll have a nice evening in Antwerp!

On Tour to the Frituur part 9: Fritkot Max in Antwerp

Fritkot Max, located on the Groenplaats in the center of Antwerp city, is an icon.

But often these places are more name then fame, so let's check it out!

Established all the way back in 1842, this is actually the oldest frituur in Antwerp still in existence.  Located in a beautiful building on the Groenplaats, it has been dressed up in a very stylish manner.  Inside on the first floor there are some seatings, and outside if is not "typical belgian weather" you can sit as well.

My order

I ordered traditionally, as they don't have any specialties of the house, apart from the fact the fries come in a pointy bag (as it used to be everywhere in my youth) instead of a box.  One small fries with sate spices (given seperatly here in a small pot), tartaar sauce and a cervela sausage, paying 7.80 euro which isn't even much for the centre of the city.

One can think that having such a "name" it might be a tourist trap, but I can't honestly say anything wrong with the order.  The meat was baked nice and dry outside, and still pink on the inside.  The fries where not greasy, baked off perfectly and crunchy.  The tartaar was of the fresh variety with nice chunks in it compared to the "from the pot" affairs...

Conclusion

Don't think this is a flat commercial tourist trap living of it's name, it is actually a very good frituur and it isn't even expensive, handling all the regular prices you find elsewhere as well!

If you are in Antwerp, make sure to give this place a try, you won't regret it.  I will give it a thumbs up and a score of 8.5, the only minor thing they don't have all those snacks you can find elsewhere, sticking to the basics.  But I wouldn't call that a bad thing necessarily!

A true classic and well deserved of it's reputation.

On Tour to the Frituur part 8: Jill's Frituur Royale in Kontich

Recently when visiting my sister-in-law, we decided to get fries for dinner, so time for another visit to a new place.

Labelling itself as a "better" fries place, I was curious to try this place out for certain!

Located in Kontich at the Duffelsesteenweg, it has an extensive menu, and to order online, you have to install their app.  The card had luxury burgers, but also fresh stoofvlees (stew), always my favourite, so needless to say that was going on my to get list.

Now, on the app it showed a large portion in an aluminium container, so it looked like that would warrant the quite excessive price of 8.80 euro...

Seeing the place from the inside, it was indeed fancy shmancy with ample seating, and even a lot of outdoor seatings for a summery day like it was.  But we took take-away and enjoy it in the garden at the family so Thorin could keep enjoying the last days of fine weather in his little swimming pool.

My order

So the stoofvlees was ordered, together with a Playboy special (a larger sized smoked cervela sausage with mayo, ketchup and fresh onions) and of course fries, clocking in at 15.50 due to the stew as mentioned above.

And what a disappointment this was... the stew came in a tiny plastic container, having a full 3 medium sized pieces of meat.  Nothing at all like the picture in the app showed!  The fries where baked average, at least my Playboy offered some comfort...

Conclusion

Way overpriced stoofvlees, small portions and not the best baked fries... this clearly wasn't a winner at all.  I am afraid this will be an insufficient on the score card, as I'm giving the place a 3.5 out of 10, and won't be revisiting this place any time soon...

Well, that's another instalment of my culinairy adventures in fries, hopefully the next place will be a better experience, and I already have my eye on one with a very specific "specialty".  Now to see to get there and then you can read all about it here!

On Tour to the Frituur part 7: Frites Affair in Center Parcs Het Meerdal

During our holiday half of august, we resided in the Het Meerdal parc of Center Parcs.

And of course, that meant a visit to the local frituur, Frites Affair, located in the Aqua Dome of the parc.

Now, of course we knew this would be a bit more expensive then a regular frituur, but bear with me.  For one, the parc itself was mighty expensive, even compared to other parcs we visited in the previous years, resulting in us often cooking and having a beer at the bungalow instead of going out for dinner in the central hub of the parc (19 euro for a basic pizza Tonno comes to mind...).

The venue had a nice amount of seating, but mind you as holidays in the Netherlands where winding down as we where there, it was not as busy as it would be say half of july, so no idea of the placing would be sufficient then.

My Order

I took one of their hamburger menu's, which contained a double patty burger, a portion of fries, mayonaise / satay sauce and a 40cl cup of Pepsi.  And this knocked me back 16.95, which I actually found okay for a Center Parcs place, you don't pay much less here for a same style menu in McDonalds, Quick or Burger King.

The burger was okay, nothing to fancy, but the fries where excellent.  Baked in the style with still some of the potato skin on them, they where well done and crunchy, as can be attested here as well by my junior assistant reviewer.

Conclusion

While the rest of the eating and drinking places in the parc where exhuberantly expensive, the Frites Affair was actually decently priced compared to them.  Still not cheap mind you, but it looked like the best price / quality point in the parc.  As the fries where so good, I give it a few points extra to offset the pricing, and will rate this as such with a 6 out of 10.

So, another place visited, now let's see where my adventures will carry me next.  I'd say it is time for something local and normal again next time, but one never knows where the stomach might lead!

On Tour to the Frituur part 6: Frituur Station in Nijvel

A while ago, we had an Age of Sigmar Spearhead try-out at a friend's place in Nijlen.

And when 4 grown men decide what to eat... we are off to the frituur!

Located at the Statieplein 2 in Nijlen, this little cabin stands outside the, you guessed it, station of Nijlen.  So we braved the local grassfield and dropped in for a huge order of four hungry men, after a whole day of gaming, and then returning to Philip's place to voraciously devour the food.

My Order

Well, it was part of a big 40+ euro order, but mine consisted of a large pack with spices, a cervela special, a pot of their own made stoofvlees (with beer!) and a pot of their home-made tartare sauce.  Only to find out upon return they forget to add the "speciaal" to my sausage (a mix of ketchup, mayonaise and raw onion btw).  That wasn't the only thing they forgot, but that wasn't part of my order piece.  I paid 14.60 for the whole lot, so that is the average price these days for this amount of fast food.

The venue has some small tables outside, but as I said, we went back to the headquarters for eating, so that is not that relevant for this review.  The people behind the counter are friendly, though it feeled like they where a bit overwhelmed during a bit of a rushmoment in people coming to get fries and stuff.

The food itself was okay.  The stew was great, the tartare sauce well made, but I wasn't to wild about the cervela, baked to dry, and the fries themselves.  They just had that little moment of "to long" for my taste.

Conclusion

Not the greatest of frituur's I've visited for this series, though their stoofvlees is highly recommended.  But all in all I'm settling on a 5 for this visit.

So that's another episode of the series, now where will the road, and my nose, take me next?

On Tour to the Frituur part 5: 't Duivels Frietje in Merksem

Time for another frituur visit, because...

We where at grandma's, and little Thorin wanted fries for dinner, so out I went to the little fires place around her corner, one we have frequented already a few times, but now it's time for some spotlighting.

Located on the Lambrechtshoekenlaan 341 in 2170 Merksem, 't Duivels Frietje is ran by a friendly family of chinese people.

Our order

Being again a family meal, that meant I can't do my usual mini fries, specialty meat and tartare saus, but instead we ordered a small fries with spices, a large fries with salt, 2 spicy cervela (this is one of their specialty meats), 2 curryworst speciaal (thats with mayonaise, ketchup and raw onion) and a cold meatball, for a total of 22.60 euro.
The fries aren't the very best I had, but they are good, standard baked non-greasy fries.  The cervela still has that pink touch on the inside, and the special sauce was not overdone as tends to happen more then I'd like, making you able to actually taste the curryworst as well.

The venue has some tables inside, seating two times maximum 4 people, but when it is good weather also has some spacey outside seating.  The place itself is small, yet functional and an overroofed driveway allows for waiting in some fresh air on your order.

Conclusion

This is the basic, okay frituur, good for that craving every belgian is born with.  Nothing spectacular, neither nothing bad, this is the sort of place everyone should have within walking distance.  I'm scoring it a 6.5 out of 10, the perfect score for that "you just have to have one" place.

Next time, I'll be looking again for some places to "solo" and experiment, as I'm making up a list of frituurs in the neighbourhood, and the not so close neighbourhood, to try out!
