Touring after the Apocalypse volume 6 - Sakae Saito

After the events of volume 5, it's time to see how the girls go on with their roadtrip through a ravaged, post-apocalyptic Japan.

And until now, we still don't know what happened, or if there are any other humans around bar Youko...

Following the Ororon line, there is a flashback of the girls in the shelter, right before they set out into the world.  They attend online classes, and Youko is scolded while Airi is commended for healthy living habbits.  And then they receive the Serow, and the door is opened to leave the shelter...

Back in the present day of their journey, they travel to Iwaki, where they want to visit the Ammonite center.  Here they go out to dig up some fossils themselves, but Youko also wants to see if they can find Inassie, a mysterious monster rumoured to live in Lake Inawashiro.  Once they arrived at the lake, they look for a boat to repair.

After "shopping" in a hardware store, they repair two small boats to set out on the lake.  Youko falls asleep while trying out hers, dreaming of how the lake used to be, and now she actually seems to talk to someone in her dream, which is a new experience for her.  Her line catches bait, dragging her along as Airi sets out in pursuit in a pedalo boat.  It turns out to be a huge fish, but as it breaks surface, Inassie appears and snatches it away, leaving the girls with the big head of the fish to grill.  At the campfire, they reflect the encounter, but never see the beast again, though shadows under the water surface hint at a wholy different story...

Their journey continues, taking them in the direction of Aizu and Nagaoka.  Stopping at a roadside station in Aizu, they find some flares in abandoned cars and decide to make their own fireworks festival in Nagaoka.  Driving through the paddyfields, making them decide to forage for some rice based food, Youko tries sake for the first time, resulting in her passing out very, very drunk.  "Luckily" immortalised by Airi on a video on their cellphone.  Later she gets a vision of the festival, and as they find a truck filled with fireworks set it up to launch it.  But only a single arrow actually works, but this draws the attention of a fighter jet...

Who is piloting this, where does it come from?  Hopefully we get some answers in volume 7!

Food Wars volume 10 - Yuto Tsukuda and Shun Saeki

It's cooking time with the next volume in the fun Food Wars series!

And this time, it starts with the conclusion of the quarterfinal by the Master of Spices, who beats his opponent and advances.

So that means the main part of the volume will tackle the fourth and final quarterfinal, between the eldest of the Aldini brothers and Mimasaka, who tries to get under his opponent's skin by insulting his younger brother.  They agree on making it a Shokugeki, putting Aldini's knife on the line.  Mimasaka turns out to be a trash character, caring only about winning, but Aldini gets back at him by engaging the "duello" etiquette.  If he wins, he will have Mimasaka bend the knee and publically apologise.

But Mimasaka has stalked Aldini for weeks, copying his recipy and adding some of his own variations, and Aldini suddenly gets an idea to add something extra to his recipy, using his special olive oil he always keeps with him for luck.  Inventing a new flavour of lemon curd on the spot, this has never the less been countered by Mimasaka even before he thought it up.  As a result, he beats Aldini, taking his knife from him in what turns out to be his 100th Shokugeki victory.

Soma and Mimasaka have a talk, as they will face each other in the semi-finals.  Mimasaka proposes a new Shokugeki, but to the dismay of his friends Soma raises the stakes astronomically,  putting his future as a cook on the line against Mimasaka having to return all 100 knives.  He then even tells him what he will be making, as Mimasaka would find out soon anyways by his stalking behaviour.

In the meantime, a young student from the journalism course joins Soma, wanting to put him in the spotlight as he is considered the underdog against Mimasaka, and they go visit Erina to taste his dishes...

So the contest is heating up, and while we know Soma will win as there are still 20+ volumes in the series to go, it'll be fun to find out just it will pan out exactly.

Touring After The Apocalypse volume 5 - Sakae Saito

In this fifth book of the highly enjoyable series, we remain almost all the time in the Kusatsu region of Japan.

And the reason?  Because that mysterious boy that saved Youko last volume lives there.

He cares for her together with Airi as they where close saving her from the inhalation of volcanic gas nearby Mount Asama.  She has remained passed out for no less then 3 days, and learns upon regaining consciousness that the boy is called Eight, an android that restored the Onsen center.  He had awoken there 5 years ago, and is curious where the humans are now.  As he and Airi go collect the motorcycle, they talk about concepts like "friendship", but during the trip Airi gets the car stuck, and sees how Eight can replace damaged parts of his body.

On a food collecting trip, they try to lear Eight on how to sing, and to find enjoyment from a hot spring.  Youko discloses she never met onee-chan face-to-face, always communicating through the Touringgram app.  As they ask Eight to join them on their roadtrip, he tells them he can't leave due to the regeneration pod of his, while he asks in return if they wouldn't consider staying with him instead.

Airi tells Eight she and Youko will always stick together, but Youko wants to keep travelling in the end, wanting to journey back to the shelter and find a solution for Eight.  Eight however decides he needs to put Youko in suspended animation, as Airi makes a discovery near a hotspring.  Eight was originally a mass-produced infiltrator weapon, designed to kill humans.  He shuts down his emotional thinking, attacking Youko but is obliterated by Airi.  But just at that moment, Mount Asama seems to start erupting...

Eight tells them the bigger problem is Mount Shirane, which also is on the verge of eruption with a power witnessed only once in millenia, and urges them to get away as far as possible.  He locks himself in to prevent the girls from losing time saving him.  As the volcano erupts, he reflects on his directives... only to awaken away from the volcano with the girls.  They ride off singing until Eight stops functioning, burrowing him in the countryside after he discovered the concept of "fun".

In a small town, they find a bike store and manage to restore the motorcycle, before being off again to their next destination...

And so yet another small tip is lifted of the veil that covers the apocalypse and what happened, as it seemingly involved androids.  Let's wait for the next instalment and see if we get to learn some more then...

JK Haru is a Sex Worker in Another World volume 7 - Ko Hiratori and J-ta Yamada

Today it's time to have a look at the closing book of the JK Haru series, an isekai series which, even though it is her work in the other world, isn't that ecchi at all.

Which is a good thing, because gratuite nudity has been exchanged for a good story!

The book contains mostly the "sequel story" after the events of volume 6, seeing how Kyori and Haru go on with their life.  Lupe is prime candidate to become the new madam of the brothel, while Sumo has intensified his skills in baking.  Meanwhile, Haru can't stop thinking about the grey-haired guy, as Kyori notices a change in Haru, in which she often spaces out in thought during conversations.

Haru tells Kyori and Lupe that she will return to venture into the forest, refusing to take Kyori along who wants to become a genuine adventurer.  Kyori has taken an intrest in Killak, a low ranked B-level adventurer, and after some dates she beds him, but this goes sour as she isn't a virgin anymore.  Lupe comforts her, seeing as she is one of the few friends Kyori has.

During her weekly prayer session in church, she is approached by three other sisters who never where that nice to her.  They hand her a message from Killak, and she decides to join them in an excursion into the forest, in the hopes of catching up to Haru out there.  But it is all a set-up, and after the others got half drunk, they want to rape Kyori, exposing her for the slut she really is.  But Chiba stumbles onto the scene, and while mistaken at first, quickly engages the adventurers.  First ridiculed for being a lower level, they quickly learn about his cheat skill as he overcomes them without any problems, freeing Kyori who kicks her fellow sisters across the face, and have them excommunicated from the order afterwards.

Two weeks later, Haru has returned from her expedition, as Kyori tells her Lupe is training Chiba.  Kyori confesses she wants to be more like Haru, as Haru recounts her adventure and how she froze up in front of the Demon Lord's castle, breaking down crying.

Lupe and Haru think Kyori is warming up towards Sumo, while Haru confronts her inner self, realising she still needs to "grow" despite her inherint power to confront the Demon Lord, as God passes by to make use of Haru's services again.  He tells her Shequraso has already picked a mother to be reincarnated from, and Haru tells him he needs to watch over her and her mother.  The laughter of God however seems to indicate it will be here...

And so the story concludes, as Haru watches a falling star, wishing for everyone both in this world and her old world to find peace and live a free life...

As a bonus material, there is a short story set somewhere earlier in the series where Haru learns about the history of the world, as well as an interview with the creators of the series.

So the series ends, and it was a damn good one of a girl isekai'd into a world where women are oppressed, yet manages to work her way upwards through pain, loss, and the finding of friendship, highly recommended reading!

Touring after the Apocalypse volume 4 - Sakae Saito

Time to enjoy another volume of this series, and it's mysteries as to why an apocalypse took place to start with...

... maybe this fourth volume will offer some more answers, and what Youko's connection is to this all?

The girsl travel to the Oarai seaside, sleeping in the abandoned and stranded ferry that used to bring passengers to Hokkaido, as Youko has a vivid dream of how it used to be back in the days.  Strolling around, they find a huge fishtank, still filled and a big, strange creature living inside it, it's own ecosystem having developped over the years.  Returning to the seaside, they enjoy a freshly caught meal while gazing over the ocean.
Their next stop is Nikko, along the Irohazaka winding roads, which contains no less then 48 hairpins and stunning views.  After visiting a waterfall and the Nikko Toshigu shrine, they move on, but Airi thinks she hears a high pitched sound.  Their journey leads to the Yoshimi Hundred Caves, and the apparent source of the sound.  Airi wakes at night, witnessing an abandoned car driving off a cliff, pebbles rising into the air and a mysterious black orb appearing.
The orb follows her, swallowing her right before she reaches the caves and transporting her to outer space.  From here, she can see Earth, before waking up.  Thinking she experienced a vision, believing aliens visited the caves 1500 years ago to build them with the help of primitive humans.  They climb to the top, seeing a UFO take off, apparently communicating to Airi they should be back at this location in 100 years.

In Ogano, Youko has another dream in which she visits the Oshiko biker shrine and it's many biker related places, dreaming of fresh pork cutlets, but waking up she finds Airo made bento in some of the typical gas tank boxes from the city.  As they stay near Shirakaba lake, they make preparations to travel the Venus Line.  This road is said to have fantastic views, but a thick fog descended and made the journey dangerous.
Instead, they decide to climb Mount Mitsunime to enjoy a fantastic sea cloud view, before going to Karuizawa Station, where Japan's biggest shopping mall was located.  In here they go scavenging, enjoying some cosplaying while doing so, but then an earthquake is felt.  They go on, and barely escape a build up of volcanic gass, Youko passing out.  As Airi tries to drag her to safety, a car approaches, and the person stepping out stating the rumours are true, and there is still a human left...

And so the book ends, with more mystery, because not only who is this person, but as we know Airi is an android, what does he mean by "a" human left?  Let's hope volume 5 will lift some more tips of the veil of the things going on behind this seemingly innocent road trip story...

Terraformars volume 18 - Yu Sasuga and Kenchi Tachibana

Time to start ramping up those manga numbers in the second half of the year, and we kick it off with the 18th volume of the excellent Terraformars series.

Now, as we are back from Mars and start the "Earth" arc, the volume also starts the chapter numbers again by 1 instead of continuing the 170+ we ended with in volume 17.

When a high school boy is about to take a bath with his neighbouring girl, his mom enters the bathroom followed by one of the terraformars.  But before the beast can strike, they are saved by an agent of the private government company Ichi Security, namely Akari and other survivors of the Annex 1 mission.  The roaches thrive better in Earth then Mars conditions, multiplying fast.  Using the brainwaves of the captured beast, they extract a map of the place it hide-out is located.

The bugs operate differently though, following a seemingly strict hierarchy now instead of acting on instinct.  Akari goes to the sewer systems under Tokyo, but runs into Saito who together with other thugs runs an operation of organ harvesting of the beasts.  Akari knows him from back in school, and as the terraformars arrive, betrayed by a spy within the group, it turns out Saito had a black market MO operation.  The terraformars still want to catch the second alive, but the two team up to face the beasts.

The foreign agents control the monsters by the fungi the chinese also used on Mars, having come to Japan to claim the country as their own to start their domination of the world, their infrastructure and government system allowing them to go relatively under the radar, as 8000 people have already disappeared recently, an event that triggered Ichi Security's attention.  It turns out the first arrived back on Earth 17 years ago and have been preparing ever since.

Small strike forces have been send out by the company, facing the beasts that had been send out to cause sabotage acts.  In a flashback, we learn that the cure has been developped, saving Azaki's friend Sakurato.  Saito survived the attack of betrayal, and together they face the horde.

A further flashback learns the events that transpired after the Annex 1 survivors returned back to Earth, and that a vaccine was prioritized by Dr Honda to be developped.  But the events that transpired where red taped, even to the family of the fallen crewmembers.  A better drug for the MO had also been developped, allowing one to take the blood of another and increase their power with the other's abilities, as Azaki activates this Chimera Blood Operation to make short work of his enemies.  Another agent, only known as "Samurai Sword" arrives, flooding the tunnel to take down the remaining monsters.

The roaches had also infiltrated Tokyo Tower to cut communications, and are faced by a man called Tatsuhiro Someya.  He had refused the NFL even to volunteer for Ichi Security.  If he had been part of the Annex 1 mission, he would have been actually ranked number 2, with a fighting ability equalling Joseph's.  Facing a huge bear roach hybrid, he turns out to become even stronger at will thanks to his Artificial Transformation and splatters the monster.

As the aftermath of the Annex project is discussed and the rift it caused between the major nations of Earth, the brain patterns of the captured roaches learn that the beasts are actually researching humans now... and the battle for Earth is about to begin!

So that's a strong set-up volume for the new arc, and I can't wait to dive into the next volume to see where it will go!

Food Wars volume 9 - Yuto Tsukuda and Shun Saeki

Awright, time to pick up Food Wars again, as I now obtained a few volumes to continue reading this excellent series about cooking.

Which intrests me by topic alone already, and I haven't regretted reading any of the previous volumes either.

And it begins with the conclusion of Soma's quarter final cook-off versus Alice Nogiri.  When it turns out he used... convenience story candy in his recipy, the judges are totally flabbergasted.  Alice is corrected on her faulty assumptions of a bento box by the dean, her own grandfather, as she is soundly defeated by Soma.  In the meantime, Megumi is preparing for her own quarter final, in which she will face Ryo Kurokiba, Alice's assistant, in a ramen themed challenge.

As Megumi reflects on her practice dishes, using ingredients from her home village.  But Alice confides in her that her opponent also knows the seaside well, as she met him years ago when he was still a young bloke and already in charge of a diner for dockworkers.  He was a real prick back in those days, but of exceptional skill, seeing the kitchen as a battlefield.

He serves a ramen dish inspired on a french fish soup, impressing the judges, while Megumi brings a crystal clear broth made of scallops and vegetables from the Aizu area in Japan.  After a tense duel, the dean selects Ryu as the winner, but Megumi bows out of the contest under applause from the crowd.  The dean admits to himself that this class might just be diamond generation, as the survivors so far prepare for their cook offs.

Soma meets the last qualifier, Subaru Mimasaka.  While he looks like a big, rough biker, he is actually a really relaxed guy.  While the third quarter final is based around hamburgers, putting Hayama against Hisako Arato, the spice master against the medicinal chief, Soma, Aldini and Megumi get to watch the contest in Subaru's waiting room, witnessing how Hisako makes a burger from turtle meat.

But what will Hayama put up against her dish?  That is something to look forward to in volume 10 of this highly enjoyable manga series...

Terra Formars volume 17 - Yu Sasuga and Kenchi Tachibana

Time for more bugs action, as I dive into the 17th volume of the excellent Terra Formars series.

And what is that mysterious Theory 2 the previous volume ended with?

Theory 2 states that over 5000 years ago the solar system was inhabited by a single race, called the Rahab.  It concludes that the virus was actually a trap to keep humans away.  Ivan of the Russian team reveals they found a virus cluster, which he now carries on his body, to try and synthesise a vaccine from.

Still alive and fighting on Mars, a flashback teaches us the background of chinese general Liu, and how he rose from the poorest regions of China.  He recounts how, following the "Mumbai Protocol" to make regions green, the government used poisonous rain to wipe out the poor population, while this rain had green paint pigment to make it look from orbital pictures that the region was reforested instead.  But what is more, the bodies of the fallen where used for body harvesting...

It takes a look on how he rose up the steps for the Annex mission, and how he really feels towards Akari as the boy is actually the child of one of the Bugs-2 mission members, his childhood friend Ming-ming.  The remaining commanders are taken by the chinese vessel, together with the other remaining survivors.  Liu had asked his crew to betray him should they be caught out in the Chinese plan, as he was actually on the mission to help the poor and not the government.

As they prepare to chase the rescue vessel for the First and the Second, two strange warriors appear to claim Joseph's corpse.  They don't care about the war, but only about the continuation of the evolution process of humanity into perfect beings.   On board, he starts to regenerate even after bein literally cut to pieces, as he has a host of Eva clones on the vessel.

A flashback showed what really happened to Joseph's division, as he has killed them all himself, as well as his meeting with the original Eva.  He continued to kill her as well in order to do the MO procedure on her and steal her powers.  The chinese vessel's commander recalls just how the Roman Empire has gotten involved and became the 6th division, as the original plan only catered for 5 nations taking part.  He also suspects that the roaches that where already hiding onboard Annex II was the doing of Rome, as they seemingly have other plans, which had been discovered on Mars by the Russian division.

But as Mars was just a proxy war with the survivors now back en route to Earth, the governments start preparing for something bigger altogether.  Rome knows that the AE vaccine would also make the mosaic organ transplant a guaranteed success instead of the risky one it is now.  A mission overview shows the survivors of every division, but also reveals that the roaches aren't the only samples, as Komachi, Eva, Akari and Michelle are labelled "important samples".

And so the story on Mars comes to a close, and the final conflict will be fought out back on Earth, starting with volume 18...

Terraformars volume 16 - Yu Sasuga and Kenchi Tachibana

After the struggle to read through "Breasts..." (see earlier on this blog) it was time for some good old action reading.

And we do that with Terraformars 16th volume in the series, with the survivors about to be rescued from Mars at last.

The ship is protected by it's two crewmen, one being an old acquintance of Akari. They defend the vessel from the roaches, as they lay out the plan to retrieve the other survivors.  But even so, politics are still at play as Germany made a secret request in exchange to provide the engine for the rescue ship.  The ship is operated by Ichi Security, founded by the previous mission survivor and now prime-minister of Japan.

In a flashback, we learn the origins of Joseph and how he was the result of selective breeding.  Joseph's youth friends, Jack and Michelle, are lovers, but Jack gets involved in the murder of one of Michelle's teachers.  Refusing to talk, he takes his secret with him to the correcting facility, forcing Joseph and Michelle to move on with their respective lives.

But Joseph was behind it all, using his wealth to get close to Michelle himself and having a child with her, but when Jack comes out of jail he reconciles with Michelle and they move to the United States.

Back on Mars, Joseph is controlled by the spores from the Chinese commander, facing the captain's group.  They manage to bring him back from his spore controlled insanity, causing the chinese vessel to open fire on them.  But Joseph had planned it all all along, serious about wanting to be killed by the others, and stops the barrage.  Liu, Asimov and Shokichi now not only have to face him, but also the chinese controlled terraformars.

As Liu and Asimov hold the roaches off, Shokichi engages in a duel with Joseph.  But when Shokichi is accidentally hit on the temple by one of Joseph's electro attacks, he seemingly awakens a divine inspired speed and attacks the perfect being that Joseph is.  Enhanced further by the thought lost metamorphosis drug Liu still carried with him, Shokichi evolves and finally kills Joseph, decapitating him once and for all.

As the other survivors take off with only 38 of the projected 2000 samples, Liu and Asimov make their last stand on the surface of Mars.  The survivors weep at the failure of the Annex project, when Ivan, of the Russian team, reveals they found the ruins and confirmes "Theory 2".

But what theory 2 might be, that is something for the next volume that I personally can't wait to dive into!

Breasts are my favorite thing in the world volume 1 - Wakame Konbu

So, a series I got the first volume from thanks to Noshi during our Eindhoven trip in august.

And the title, well, it has a point... so let's see what this is all about then!

Well, going by the title, it won't be a manga about ping-pong...

Chiaki has a serious fetish: boobs!  And especially those off Harumi, who is well endowed and helps her to keep her obsession in check by letting Chiaki fondle them every so often.  Chiaki claims she loses all het strength and be good in anything if she doesn't get her daily dose of fondling, and not even for the sake of sexy things, she is just obsessed with them.  But as she is rather small chested herself, she can't resort to, as she calls it, being self-sufficient.

Chiaki is also the most popular girl in school though, the one all the girls have like a crush on, as they want to be like her.  That's why Harumi is from another school, to keep the secret safer.  But she also wants more and more, like a breast sandwich or even have her take her bra off to prevent the markings in her face.  Trading cell numbers with Harumi at last, she decides she actually wants to be a bra, feeling her bare breasts.

When Harumi skips some meetings, Chiaki starts to unravel in her performances, even trying to fondle herself in the process to unsatisfactory results. Luckily Harumi returns right before her important archery tournament.  But Harumi from her side is wondering wether she is developping feelings of love for Chiaki.

Chiaki takes her out for lingerie shopping, insisting on buying it for her out of thanks for all she does. But then they are almost caught when trying on each others bra's by Kana, a first year under Chiaki's wings at school...

Nope, this was not my thing at all.  It had 9 chapters, and nothing happened but some fondling, and the gags weren't even funny.  This is one series I won't get the other volumes for at all.

Touring after the Apocalypse volume 3 - Sakae Saito

The next manga to devour, we are heading back on a roadtrip through Japan, after the apocalypse happened.

And with that radiomessage at the end of volume two, let's see where this brings Youko and Airi...

The unexpected message sends them on their way to the university city of Tsukuba, where a maintenance program for Airi is located to prevent any future short "freeze up" glitches.  As they arrive at the world expo memorial park, they find the laboratory inside the model of a rocket ship.

The entrance is hidden inside a telephone booth, and they are taken down into a fully automated facility to undergo examinations.  But Youko's routine medical check up takes far longer then foreseen, and while Airi has her maintenance, she passes out during the check.  They go visit the planetarium afterwards to relax and gaze at the stars, before moving on the next day.

On their Touringgram app, a stamp collection feature has become active in the lab, making them go visit Lake Kasumigaura and hunt some ducks for making yakitori's for dinner.  Enjoying the view from the panoramic tower, and collecting the stamp there, they decide to go to the Motegi racing circuit.  Youko has a dream she is racing there, before giving it an actual try on their electric bike.

On a hunch from Youko, they go into the Honda collection museum, meeting a robot museum guide that becomes active again after they turn electricity on.  During the tour, she is even allowed to ride Valentino Rossi's world championship winning bike from 2001.  But she gets a feeling someone else is present as well.

She takes the bike for a race against Airi, who controls a radio-controlled race car through VR.  Their race brings the spirit of the circuit alive one last time, Youko witnessing apparitions of famous cars riding alongside her.  But Airi saw neither those apparitions, nor any cheering robots in the stands as Youko claims to have witnessed.  The guide robot falls over, ceasing to function, and as they open him up it seems that it was unable to do so for years already with the broken parts inside...

So this was another fun volume of a series I really enjoy, but what is going on with Youko though?

Terraformars volume 15 - Yu Sasuga and Kenchi Tachibana

Time for one of the manga I enjoy immensely, and that is also the reason this jumped forward a lot in the pile of manga still to read.

Because I loved the anime (and Michelle of course), and the books add that extra layer to the story, as well as more story to the series.

All now forced to work together at last, the survivors fight to get to the extraction point.  On Earth, agents are hunting the terraformars that made it back to our planet.

But not all the groups fare well, with Keiji being severly injured facing a terraformar with the same base, the peacock mantis shrimp.  He removes the armguards he is equipped with to be able to use his natural speed and boxing skills better, beating the big beast.

Ivan remembers exactly why he fights, and boosts Marcos as well.  As they run, the rescue ship, the Frontier Spirit, is set to arrive in 9 minutes to drop escape pods.  But a terraformar that fights out of it's own free will and not some instinct blocks their way, and some of the survivors still fall to it.  Only about 20 of the crew of 100 remain from the Annex 1, with the beast in front of them seemingly having hatched onboard the vessel and having access to some gear from the now derelict vessel.

On the other side, Akari and Michelle are forced into one of the escape pods with Eva, as the four remaining division commanders stay behind to face the hordes of beasts closing in on them.  Keiji and Marcos still face the Annex born one, when bombs of the same kind as the day they arrived detonate around them.  They realise the roaches are actually coralling them in, and have been doing this from the moment the expedition arrived on Mars.  But Keiji and his group survive the bombardment, suprising the Annex 1 born leader.  They overcome it, but Kanako gets grieveously injured in the process.

On Earth, the leaders of Japan and the United States have found an ally to send a rescue ship, as those efforts had been blocked by China.  From the Deza Republic, which lies between Germany, Russia and the Roman Federation, they found the possibility to send one as the country isn't part of U-Nasa and it's politics.  So this resulted in Japan covertly building the ship, as the Annex survivors are suprised they are being saved by a private enterprise vessel...

And so this action packed volume comes to a close, with the rescue of the survivors now really close.  How will this pan out, and can the division commanders be saved?

That will be something for next volume!

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime volume 13 - Fuse and Taiki Kawakami

Time to revisit the adventures of our favorite blue slime, Rimuru, and his budding nation of Tempest.

While the anime is already far beyond this volume, never the less it is a joy to read, and not only for the Veldora point of view always at the end of the books.

Returning to Tempest after his fight with Hinata in the previous volume, he finds the fallen people of the attack that occured during his absence.  He holds council with his confidantes to assess the situation, learning that Falmuth and the Western Holy Church are in league to subdue him.  They will return with an army to do just that in a week time.

Both Gobzo and Shion are amongst the fallen, as his rage increases making him don the mask of magic resistance again that he got from Shizu.  Kaval and his band arrive to help, bearing news of how there is a very slim chance of reviving the dead.  Eren tells him the tale of the dragon princess and her killed baby dragon, Rimuru deducting this is how Milim came into being a demon lord as she had to seal the essence of the now out of control ressurected Chaos dragon.

In order for Rimuru to succeed in bringing the fallen back, he will have to ascend to the status of demon lord first, requiring the souls of ten thousand humans.  But he also must decide what to do with Mjurran, who was send in as the trigger for the attack on the city.

He learns she is loyal to Clayman, but that this is in a forced way as he had her heart exchanged with an artificial spying device.  He replaces this device to prevent further espionage before unfolding the plan he has come up with.  All pieces now sorted, he reveals he is also actually an otherworlder reincarnated into this world as a slime.  Apologizing for the events that happened as he feels responsible for the events due to the rules he had installed concerning humans.  But his comrades forgive and understand this, and soon a new policy is been formed by him and the council.

Rimuru discloses he will face the invading army by himself, thrusting in his companions to take out the devices that erect the barrier over the city...

And so the battle is about to commence as Rimuru now seeks the status of demon lord in order to bring the fallen back.  Let's see in volume 14 how this unfolds!

Saintia Sho volume 7 - Masami Kurumada and Chimaki Kuori

With Saga seemingly returned, it is time for another action packed volume of the Saint Seiya spin-off series, Saintia Sho.

So let's read further, and especially enjoy all the things cut from the anime, of Shoko's quest to free her sister from Eris's influence.

As Eris's temple is on a collision course with Sanctuary, Aiolia engages the ressurected Saga.  One of the dryads of Eris, Ate, seems to no longer agree with her godess's will, jealous of how the former Saints seemingly are being favored.

They are informed though that Eris, more then Athena's, wants Shoko's head, and that divine powers through the golden apple are the reward for those that bring it to her.  While guarding Athena, Shoko is attacked by a mirror image of herself wearing a black version of her cloth.  As her cosmo awakens thanks to the protection of her sister, she defeats her, who turns out to be Madness Mania.

Ate attacks her in turn, but Aries Mu steps in, easily repelling the dryad.  He sends Shoko to the temple, relieving her of her watch.  Aiolia struggles at Saga who has become far more powerfull then before, but Scorpio Milo saves him.   In the meantime, Silver Saints Shield Ewan and Southern Cross Georg protect the innocents.

Shoko, joined by Cassiopeia Elda, advances inside the temple until they come face to face with another fallen Saint, Orion Rigel.   Shoko agrees that he takes her to her sister, as Milo and Aiolia together engage the being that was once Saga.

And so with Shoko before the gate leading to Eris, it's time to wait to read the next volume and see how the story will progress, as we are nearing the end of the anime as well now.

Blue Period volume 12 - Tsubasa Yamaguchi

Summer break, and his part-time teacher job, are over, so Yatora prepares for his second year at TUA (Tokyo University of Arts).

And that also means it is a return for me to the beloved manga, one I truly enjoy reading.

Arriving back at the university, he runs into Maki.  She has recollected and refocussed herself, and transferred to TUA through sculpture courses.  He also meets her friend Fuu, whom he had briefly ran into in the past together with Yuka.

As they get to meet their new teachers, one of them, the refined Inukai, is kind of a big name as he is one of the vice-presidents of the school.  Afterwards, he returns to Maki, getting to know people actually not in the oil painting course like himself.

But then Inukai gives them their first assignment, making no less then 500 drawings in two weeks time.  Yatora struggles to find a concept to tie them all together though, as he drops by Maki in the sculpture atelier and seeing the piece she is working on.  He seeks advice both from her as from his friend Yakumo to motivate himself to get started on the assignment.  But on the train home, he just starts drawing people he sees, and having found his concept does this for the whole 500 drawings.

During review, Inukai tells Yatora that he needs to focus less on himself and take a broader look at art that others have been creating as there next assignment is all about "guilt".  Running into two other students he met at maki's, he joins them to visit Fuji-san.  She runs an art collective called No Marks, and he lends a hand setting up for their exhibition.  As he misses his last train back, he stays over for the night at the collective.  The next morning, he learns more about her, like how she views museums.  As he learns her insights on the evolution of art, he decides he will attend the event No Marks is running the evening after, getting a fresh view on art in the process.  And he learns his end of the first year work actually made an impression on her.

Thinking over his art, he has skipped school for 2 weeks now, staying over at No Marks.  But he gets ever more comfortable in the group, their shared house style and people, and especially Fuji's opinions and views on art.  He even starts doubting if TUA is actually the right place for him, and when he finds a ticket to a solo artist that is self-taught, he goes to see the exposition.  There he sees Inukai as well, but the professor doesn't seem to recognise him.

He realises he is falling in love with art and wants to become part of Fuji's circle.  But then his fellow TUA student, who made him doubt if the school was something for him or not, unexpectantly tells him he won't be visiting No Marks anymore without sharing his reasoning...

What influence this will have on Yatora and what decision he will make we will hopefully find out in the next volume of this highly enjoyable art manga!

My Dress-up Darling volume 9 - Shinichi Fukuda

Let's revisit our favorite otaku girl Marin, in the 9th volume of this cosplay slice-of-life romance series!

And Marin is all to happy to tell people about "her" Gojo.

Like the employees in the beauty salon she frequents, but then one of them makes a reward she seems to have put on a little weight.   During her shoot later on though, she gets the same remark.  She finds out it is indeed so, yet is amazed Gojo doesn't bother with it, offering to resize her costumes a little.

She suprises Gojo as she bought an expensive camera he had been wanting to buy, as he remains suprised by Marin's force of will, but also her impulsivity.  Trying out the new camera they are amazed by the quality of pictures they can make with it.

Visiting a cosplay event to try out the new camera instead of participating themselves, Gojo wants to learn how to make props for costumes.  He has arranged to that end to meet up with Akira-chan, who writes online tutorials on the subject, while Amane is meeting Marin.  But it turns out Akira-chan is a woman, and she thought Gojo was a girl...

Learning about camera angles, Marin and Suzuka meet up with Gojo and Akira, to invite them to an afterparty.  But this causes Akira, who was open with Gojo, to suddenly fall silent, unnoticed to the others.  Gojo has a feeling though he met her somewhere before.

They all go out together to eat, when the plan is formed to do a group cosplay based on the videogame Coffin.  Marin calls JuJu-san to make sure they get to six people for the event, as all the others she knows chime in to do it.

And so another instalment ends of this loveable series, and hopefully soon I will find the time to read and catch up on the series some more as it remains something relaxing after a busy day.

Blue Period volume 11 - Tsubasa Yamaguchi

Time to revisit our favorite manga about art, with the next volume of Blue Period.

And Yaguchi starts to realise he needs an income as TUA is an expensive course.

He reacts to an advertisement, and to his amazement comes out at his high school art teacher, Saeki-sensei, who also runs art courses for children.   He is assigned the group of 3 to 5 year olds for his day, but one of the kids clamps him up in a discussion about Picasso.   This causes him to study more on the artist, and Haru asking about him.  They go together to an open exhibit, where he teaches Yaguchi the points of Picasso's art and cubism.  Learning how expansive Picasso was as such, as he makes a paralel with the anime shows he saw as a kid.

This makes him decide to look at art with his own eyes from now on, instead of guided by opinions, while as a return favor Haru asks him if he can join the teaching job as he is intrested in the art children make.  He joins miss saeki's class as a teacher as a result, and while Yaguchi bonds with the parents mostly, Haru and his braids are a hit with the children.

Yaguchi learns that one of the kids, Miku, is partially colourblind.  Miss Saeki arranges a field trip to the park to teach about colours and how everyone sees the same colour differently.  But when Shoya's mum comes to pick him up, she barely cares about his art that he made, making Yaguchi realise this might be the reason why the kid is unmotivated in class.  As he talks with Shoya outside the class, he finds out he loves to draw mecha and forming a bond Shoya starts to blossom open in artclass.

Saeki tells the children that in april, for the end of the course, they will rent a small gallery to hold an exhibition, with the children able to show off their artpieces.  Haru asks wether Yaguchi wants to consider joining him on a trip to Europe next year in order to visit various special exhibitions.  Back in class, he notices that Sae, a young girl who attends a lot of different extra classes like art, swimming and more might be reaching her limits, as he sees how her art is changing.

In two weeks, Studio Saeki's art class exhibition opens, and the children start the preparations.  During these practice presentations, Sae breaks down and starts crying as she thinks of herself not good enough in anything she does.  Haru goes to visit her and together they make a collaboration piece to giver her a breather, but when her dad, with the best intentions, wants to rip the piece in two to give each a half she quits the art class as well as all her other classes, her parents realising they have been pushing her to hard.

As the exhibition begins, Sae and her dad come to watch and wish Haru the best of luck with his studies, although he believes he isn't made out to be a teacher.  Their part-time job comes to an end, as holidays are over and Yaguchi returns to TUA campus to start his second year...

Saintia Sho volume 6 - Masami Kurumada and Chimaki Kuori

Time for some more burning cosmo reading!

Picking up where we left in volume 5, when Skok's sister was selected to merge with Eris, the goddess of discord is gathering her powers to re-enter the stage.

At the abyss, Shoko is being pulled in to meet with her sister Kyoko, now fully merged with the spirit of Eris.  Kyoko tells her the world will soon be destroyed, and she wants her sister to join her in the paradise she is creating with the Tree of Life.  But Shoko refuses, unwilling to believe her sister is completely gone, and vowing she will save her from Eris.  Eris tries to trap her, but Scorpion Milo arrives together with Athena, forcing Eris to withdraw.

In the meantime in Eris's temple, Aiolia has infiltrated the place.  The golden Lion makes smooth headway towards it's centre, as Milo also starts to enter the temple, leaving Shoko behind to protect Athena.  Peacock Mayura contacts them, telling that she suspects that Mii and Xiaoling are caught inside, being swept into the temple when it formed.

Aiolia breaks through the gate harboring a strong, evil cosmos, suddenly finding himself in the late Gold saint Saga's Another Dimension.  But it isn't the Gemini saint that meets him, but his deceased brother, Sagitarrius Aiolos.  He mocks the golden lion for how weak he is, before changing appearances to a mirror image of Aiolia.

Mii awakens in the temple, faved by Malice Emony, who has grown since the previous encounter where the Dolphin saint defeated her.  Stronger then before, she captures Mii in her Lunatic Bind attack, but Katya interferes.  Mii gets up, sending the ice saintia on her way to face Emony herself.  Strenghtened by her vows to Athena, she makes short work of the bratty ghost warrior, before collapsing from her sustained injuries.

Aiolia sees the true face of his opponent, the evil side of Saga that has been ressurected and who has his own personal goals, using Eris's offer as a means to reach those goals.  They engage in battle, as lower dryad warriors arrive at Sanctuary to capture it.  They are swiftly defeated by Jabu and the other bronze saints, Shaina, Aldebaran and Shaka.

And so this volume ends, the pieces being set in motion for the battle between Athena and Eris, with Shoko still being held back as the ace-in-the-hole versus Eris's host Kyoko.

Asumi-chan is intrested in Lesbian Brothels volume 2 - Kuro Itsuki

Next on the reading list for this year it is time for a "Men of culture" book.

And that is, little innocent Asumi exploring the world of escorts more, in the hopes of finding her crush again and bringing her back into her life.

Unknowingly having booked her high school crush and goal of her bookings, it is Mai who recognizes her and starts getting all nervous for the appointment, as they both blame themselves it turned out in a let-down when they tried that first kiss all those years ago.

But that means she has to work as well to keep her brothel visits paid, and at her job in the catcafe, a special school girl event takes place.  But as she is getting overworked, she comes down with a fever and has to cancel her appointment.  As she goes back to the website for a re-booking, it turns out the girl, whom is actually Mai, is full for the coming weeks.  Instead she books Serina, an experienced girl that shows her great pleasure, and due to their get together decides not to retire from the job.

Later she learns her senpai not only knows Serina, but that she herself once briefly worked in a brothel.  Deciding to try the sites specials, she tries a threesome with two girls she had already met before.  Here she gains new experiences, like watching to people making love for the first time before being drawn in herself.  And as such, gaining an experience not even her senpai ever had.

When they are discussing it, they find a keychain of an anime figure, and soon after a girl comes to look for it, Asumi inviting her to go see the new movie.  The girl, Nanao, is rather shy though.  They have a fun night out, and Asumi befirends her.  But when she returns home, she sees on the brothel app that one of the girls, Iroha, offers a cosplay service as she loved the movie as well, resulting in Asumi booking her.  Though their passionate evening makes it difficult for her to see the movie a second time without reliving her cosplay adventure...

And so the second volume comes to an end with a short bonus story of a young Azumi and Mai having a sleepover, and we gear up for the next instalment.

Blue Period volume 10 - Tsubasa Yamaguchi

Aaaah Blue Period, how I enjoy thee!

And already we come to the 10th volume of the series, having moved well beyond the excellent anime adaption now, and the finals of Yatora's first year at TUA coming up.

During a talk with Takahashi, he asks him if he likes making art, a question to which he hadn't espected the reply he got, and is seriously taken aback by it.  All Takahashi would really like is that people would get to know the real person he is, and  not just the one based on the assumptions they make judged on his talent for art.

Takahashi has a talk with one of his teachers about the end term project, while Yatora struggles on deciding exactly what he would like to do.  When visiting the school's rabbit pen, Takahashi relaxes, and actually starts to bond with Okamoto, another boy in his class that he never really noticed before, playing Pokemon and the like.  At home, he rebukes his mom for the first time ever, and these internal struggles with himself result in him blowing up the bridges again that he was starting to build.

When Yatora, kind-off out of guilt initially, asks him out for an all nighter, he is amazed Takahashi actually accepts the proposal.  Arriving in Shibuya, they visit firstly an art exhibition by Konatsu Ono, a famous conceptual artist that will be a guest lecturer at their finals piece presentation.  As they go museum hopping, yatora realises for the first time what it is to really "feel" art.  Glad he could spend this evening out with Takahashi, he has a firmer idea what art is to him, and he changes his end of the year project so late in, deciding to make a painting instead of the 3D structure he wanted to create, working on it throughout the new year.

And then the reviews are about to begin! To his own suprise, he isn't burned down in the comments.  He has created a painting of the sportsbar he and his friends frequent.  And while Takahashi gets critiqued for his work, he rebukes the teacher to drive home the point behind his painting.  Yet in the end, they all pass and are allowed to progress to the second year of TUA.

Takahashi starts rebuilding the frail bridges he had been building before, the commentary on his piece having opened his eyes somewhat.  Yatora starts looking for a part-time job, and as he calls the number on a flyer he found for an art assistant, he gets his high school teacher miss Saeki on the other end of the phone...

This is kind of what I love about this series, you have your two main characters who are vastly different, and as they walk the path of their career, the supporting cast keeps changing, like it does with real people during the course of the years.  I'm curious what the next instalment shall bring, something I will be finding out in the not so far future!
