Getting there.

Hello again... and welcome to Inso's World.

It is a stunning Sunday afternoon in sunny Cornwall and I have just got back from the pub, after watching the England football team win a match (Yay! Go team!). Friday, we went out and watched a band  and Saturday we just pottered around; not doing very much... which is roughly how the rest of the week went too.

From a hobby perspective, I have also pottered along. First of all, I have finished sculpting the Plasma-Tank's commander and she has gone from this:

... to this (after a full base-coat and wash of Agrax Earthshade):

Unfortunately, I went off the boil a bit and she is still in the same condition. I find the stippling phase to be a fairly boring process so I have to gear myself up to get it done. Luckily, the remaining four tanks arrived from Ebay and they have all been checked and their sprues washed now:

Click the Pic!

All the sprues are now dry and in a big box awaiting assembly/painting. In the meantime, I have been looking at my army lists and noticed that there are quite a few 'awaiting assembly' entries and, in a bid to get rid of a few, I washed a bunch of Halfling Snipers and have cleaned them up, filled them where necessary and based them... so if you ever wanted to know what 30 Halfling Snipers looked like, here's what:

Click the Pic!

The assembly of these has meant that I can tick off three boxes on my organisation chart because 1, 2, and 3 platoon, now have a squad of ten Halfling Snipers each.

With the army lists in mind, I noticed that I was short 3 Sentinels for the third platoon. With the expense of the Tank Company weighing heavy on my mind, I couldn't justify spending another £45.00 on three more Vulkans from Prodos so I got my thinking cap on and remembered that I had three of the old style 'Warzone Resurrection' Vulkans. They are not as beefy as the newer ones but are of a similar style so I have dug them out of the loft and will be adding them to the army as three Scout Sentinels. They look like the ones in this image that I made from pictures found on-line:

Click the Pic!

If you compare them to my existing Armoured Sentinels, you will see what I mean:

Click the Pic!

The Scout Sentinels will be getting a Fist and a Heavy-Flamer each, along with a one-shot missile. I will be using the Heavy-Flamers that were left over from the Armoured Sentinels and the Fists that were part of the add-ons from the Kickstarter that I got the lighter Vulkans from. I will also be beefing up their shoulders and may well change the 'cockpit' but at the moment, I don't plan on starting them... but I have them to hand, if I need a change of pace. My main focus has to be my Tank Company at the moment... but no plan survives contact with the enemy.

In other news, my ideas head has been working overtime and I have been thinking about Battle-Cannons for the last of the tanks. Luckily, I remembered that I had some weapons from my old VOTOMs Mechs that were not used so I dug them out and have sorted out some Battle-Cannons (and a Vanquisher-Cannon) for the last four Tanks. As well as this, I have been thinking about arming the Mecha that I am planning and have come up with an idea for how to build a big Chainsword... but I am not touching that for now. As for the Mecha... the more I think about it, the more involved the conversion is going to be. It is looking like it may end up more a scratch-build than a conversion...

Well... that's it for today.

See you from the submarine!

Another Item Ticked off the List

Hello and welcome to Inso's World again.

It hhas been another long week but fortunately, I have managed to summon the enthusiasm to work on an element of the Squat army that was relatively simple but took a bit of time; the second squadron of armoured Sentinels.

Using some of the money I have amassed from my EBay sales, I ordered in thre Vulkan Battlesuits from Prodos Games. I went direct because the packaging still shows the old style ofmodel (the long limbed version) and I couldn't guarantee that I would get the correct version if I ordered else where.

When the Vulkans arrived (after a VERY short while) I counted the components and was happy that everything was there so I cleaned everything up ready for assembly. When it came to assembly, I noticed that there was something wrong... one of the Vulkans had two left legs. This was a big disappointment because I was in the right frame of mind to build the Squadron but could now only build three. I penned a customer request email to Prodos but also risked an order from EBay for a whole new one; just in case my request for a replacement limb was ignored.

Needless to say, the whole one turned up from EBay (luckily, the correct type) and I have heard nothing from Prodos.

So... I now had three complete Vulkans and set about chopping and converting them. Here's what I used:

  • Head - Plastic 'Jumping Bean', Plasticard, Plastic Tubes, Stick on Gems, Green Stuff.
  • Right Arm - Lascannon from Space Marine Centurion, Tau Pulse Carbine, Green Stuff.
  • Smoke Launchers - Chest Weapons from a Space Marine Centurion.
  • Runes - Green Stuff.
As you can see, there was only a small amount of conversion required and fortunately, the sculpting wasn't too intricate so I could manage it even though I have been tired.

Here is the finished product; an armoured Sentinel squadron (for the support of the second infantry platoon):

So... I STILL haven't managed to finish the army command squad. It is still sitting on my workbench but I just don't seem to have the 'mojo' to finish it at the moment. I am sure it will happen soon... I just need to get my head right first.

As I mentioned before, my dad is in hospital after injuring his neck. He will be in hospital for a while and I have been going to see him at the weekends... but it is a 6 hour round trip and when you don't sleep too well, it sort of takes its toll a bit. That is why I have slowed down a bit with hobby stuff recently because I am at a place now where everything I pick up gets dropped, I put finger prints all over my sculpting work and I glue myself to anything I happen to be assembling at the time.

This weekend, he was moved to a hospital another half hour away so the drive is now a seven hour round trip... fortunately, he is recovering well but it is still going to be a long road to recovery and even then, he will have to amend his routine to cater for his new restrictions on his mobility.

Hmmm...

That's it. I'm off. I have a lunch date with my son who has a weekend pass from basic training. It will be great to hear what he has been getting up to over the past four and a half weeks.

See you from atop a soaring eagle!

Life is life.

Hello again and welcome to Inso's World.

Life has really got in the way of things this week so I have very little hobby stuff to share. The only vaguely hobby related thing I have managed to achieve this week has been the sorting of three sets of Vulkan parts into armoured Sentinel conversion kits:

Click the Pic!

The three Vulkans arrived from Prodos Games in good time and the parts have been separated from their frames but not cleaned up yet. As you can see, there are some Las-cannons in the boxes with the Vulkan parts; as well as half a bean and some tiny launchers from a Centurion kit (smoke launcher proxies). When these have been assembled, they will look similar to these (but with las-cannons instead of Auto-Cannons):

That's it from a hobby viewpoint, really.

From a life perspective, I have been a little bit (a lot, actually) preoccupied with my Dad's health. He took a tumble last Sunday and has been in hospital ever since. My sister has been taking care of everything and I finally got to see my Dad yesterday and I am now happy that he is in a 'good place' at the moment... so I can relax a little bit. He is likely to be in hospital for a while and is currently immobile so time will be the thing that boths heals and drives him crazy with boredom. It is going to be a long road.

In other news, my son has been at basic training for over a week now and is learning to deal with the realities of what is required of you in the military. Needless to say, he is working hard and learning the ropes with the ups and downs that go with things. Highs and lows...

Right... I'm off to do stuff.

If you are in the UK and want to check out my EBay stuff, click HERE. It is unlikely that I will put anything up tonight but there is still stuff for sale so pop along and have a look.

See you from the badger's set!

Holidays!

This weekend is the start of a week's holiday for me. I won't be going away for the week... just occasional day-trips... so it means that I have plenty of time to chill out and see where the mood takes me. So far, it has taken me to Reading and Henley but I expect to go a little further afield and dip my toes in the sea somewhere.

Over the last week, I have come to the conclusion that a vehicle I was working on wasn't robust enough. So I went online and bought a bunch of plasticard from Antenociti's Workshop. Not only are the prices reasonable but the delivery time was very quick... so I can recommend them to everyone now. It means that I now have what I need to start afresh and make a nice robust vehicle that is suitable for casting.

In other news, I have recently joined a new forum called Random Platypus. It was originally a 'Not Frothers UUK' but now it seems to be gaining a shape of its own. As a result of joining the forum, I have taken up a challenge to paint a squad in a certain time-frame; which means I have picked up a brush again and have started to paint these:

Click the Pic!

They are the first squad of converted Rogue Trader Imperial Guard that have been turned into Squats. I have finished a 'pre-base-coat' which I will now call a 'disgrace coat' because it is a lot messy... however, it is a start and will hopefully motivate me to continue with them.

I have been browsing around and have now discovered that Prodos Games has the new style Vulkan up for sale. Here is a pic:

Click the Pic!

It is a gorgeous little model that has a choice of weapons and is very much worth a punt at £14.99. It is also perfect for my converted Squats to use... so I very much expect to be getting one or two in the future.

And now for a complete change of direction... the Robins are nesting in out kitchen extractor fan again. I managed to get a very blurry picture of the chicks and there are at least two so once they are more established (and I have my ladder back from my friend), I will get some better pix that are good enough to show off. I am glad that I followed the advice I was given; not to clean the nest out after the first clutch. Isn't nature great?

Well... that's it for now.

See you from the construction table!

Tigers!

I know I sound like a bit of a stuck record but I have had another slow hobby week this week. I have put a bunch of plastic space Dwarfs into the Dettol and cleaned them off. I then separated them down into their components and quickly discovered that I have got enough heads/bodies/weapons for about 35 troops... but not enough arms. It isn't a problem because I'll just sculpt them on but it does add to the length of time it will take to put them all together... and it is something that will be on the back burner for now anyway.

I've been throwing bids on Ebay this week and failing in glorious fashion... so I don't have any news about that.

I am looking forward to the end of this Kickstarter project (Mechadrome):

I have pledged for a small gathering of these awesome little mechs and I hope that they are as awesome in hand as they appear on the site.

Speaking of mechs, Prodos Games has been updating a lot of their Warzone Resurrection miniatures and they have been doing a great job. The one that really caught my eye was the new version of the Bauhaus Vulkan... a proper stocky little chap:

Click the Pic!

I think that this will make an excellent addition to any Squat/Space Dwarf force... oh... and Warzone Bauhaus force (of course).

In other news, the Forum of Doom is having an Unofficial Diorama of Doom competition again this year. At the moment, the final poll is up to vote for a theme. If you want to pop along, have a look and vote it would be very cool of you. Here's the link:

You never know; you may be inspired enough to join in with your own offering.

From a personal hobby perspective, I managed to throw a basecoat on my Torge's Tigers dropship. It is still very WIP but, I think I have the patterns roughly in place:

So... tomorrow I am travelling down to Somerset for the funeral of my friend who recently passed away after her fight with cancer. It's not one I am looking forward to but I wouldn't miss it for the world...

See you from the pit!

Another Sunday.

Before I start today's post, I'd like to welcome The Lord of Excess, head head and Wyvern Wrangler to Inso's World. I hope you all enjoy your stay and find something of interest amongst the various corridors and pathways.

This week has been another slow one in the hobby camp but busy in 'real life'. Amongst all the usual working routine, I have had my annual ground training (first aid, security, fire safety, shooting and respirator training) and my fitness test to keep me busy. It is all done now so I can focus on better things now.

Hobby wise, I finished of another of the fire teams for the powered armoured units and have started another one... but they look just the same as the rest so I haven't taken a pic. I'll get a pic when the squad is finished. I haven't had the eye for sculpting but I have been busy on the E-Bay front and have bought another couple of Votoms mechs (Fatty and Berserga) so I am now confident that I have all of the variants I require for my Votoms project (once the kits arrive, of course). I also bagged a very cheap, assembled mecha... which I have now stripped down ready for converting... and it is a Da-Web mech from Megaro-Zamac. I am sure that it will crop up at some point.

In other news, I went to the Overlord event in Abingdon today and it was exactly as I'd expect. The event filled two large halls and there were plenty of sellers and games to keep my attention for a few hours... well done to the Abingdon Wargamers... it was a very well run event and I met some very nice people. I took a few pounds to spend and have bought a few bits and bobs (I'll share in a future post)... but what I'd really like to reflect on is how the internet paints a picture that real life doesn't match...

Warzone Resurrection is a radically new version of the old Warzone game and uses computer design and 3D printing to produce some excellent miniatures. I have seen many of the renders on line and have also purchased some of them (three Vulkans) but today, I learned a valuable truth...

... The internet lies!

What!? I hear you cry. Yes, you heard me; the internet lies.

The one thing the internet can't provide is a true reflection of the 'presence' of things. You can get an idea of the size and measurements of a miniature... or even comparisons with other miniature types but in order to really get an idea of how the miniature looks and feels... you need to see it in the flesh. This was highlighted to me today when I visited the Warzone Resurrection stand at Overlord. In their display cabinet, they had a rather imposing, resin mech called an Eradicator. I have seen it on line before but wrote it off for being 'gangly' and ungainly. Well, I got the opportunity to pick one up and get the feel of it, turn it over in my hands and generally decide how it really looked... and it was much more imposing than the website could possibly show. Fortunately, it wasn't for sale at the event (or I would have been in trouble) but it has certainly been elevated to something I want to buy. I also think that it could possibly double as a Knight titan with the addition of a proper head... but hey... what do I know? The only problem I have now is finding the money to buy one!

That is about it for today.

See you from the race track!

Teratons and school reunions.

This week has been quiet on the hobby front apart from a couple of excellent little things happening. First of all, my box of 3 new style Vulkan battle walkers arrived and after a bit of snipping I made up a pic of the components that make up a single walker (including the extra arms):

Click the Pic!

I was sent the Vulkans a little bit early (due to only wanting the walkers and not cards/troop weapons) so thanks to the guys at Prodos Games for sorting this out for me. Hopefully, this week I will have a bit of an opportunity to get some work done on them.

On the same day that the Vulkans arrived, a small parcel also turned up from Mantic Games. Inside was a team box of Dreadball Teratons and a special character called Dozer. I will not be using these for Dreadball so have only assembled the character and four players who have a wrist gun. Here is a pic with a Grymn for scale purposes:

Click the Pic!

In other news, I went to a school reunion in my old home town yesterday and stayed overnight; traveling back today. I was apprehensive about going and was a bit of a 'cat on hot bricks' until My guest and I actually turned up at the venue (she was even more apprehensive than I was). However... it was for no reason because the event went swimmingly. Many a story told, many a drink shared and many a hug given. I always thought that school reunions were a terrible idea but I think that I have changed my opinion. The only downside was the fact that my favourite teacher wasn't there... in fact... no teachers were there. Maybe that was a good thing?! As a result of this weekend's frivolous activities, I am absolutely shattered. Mind you, I didn't hit my pit until gone 3AM and this old boy hasn't had the practice for that sort of thing lately so I am not surprised.

Well... that is it from a very tired Inso!

See you from the depths of the darkest of places where I can hopefully get a full night's kip!
