Slow and steady wins the race.

Hello and welcome to Inso's World again.

This week has been fairly chilled out, being mostly filled with a few chores and lots of pottering about.

Monday I sorted out my chores and went to get a tattoo:

Click the Pic!

It is the Rune Fehu (Freya's rune) and matches the rune that my wife wears as a pendent. The tattoo is on my left moob...

After the tattoo, I popped round to pick a mate up so that he could go to the beach for the first time in years. He has fallen on tough health over the past six or so years and hasn't really left the town... so we went to Marazion for a bit of sea air and a pint and it was a great way to spend an afternoon.

Tuesday I put my Halfling Snipers and Exo Armour legs up for sale. The Halflings can be found at this link:

and look like this:

The Exo legs can be found here:

and when combined with some Tartaros terminator bodies (available from HERE), they look a bit like this:

Then, in the afternoon, I went to get my hair cut and let my hairdresser loose with whatever she wanted to throw at me... so this happened:

Click the Pic!

Yes... it is PURPLE with leopard spots around the side... I must admit that, even with my strong character, I had to take a deep breath before walking out into the street.

The rest of the week was taken up with family time, chores and packing up miniatures... with a trip to the post office thrown in.

Another thing happened this week... and that was the realisation that I can't be dictated to by circumstances and I need to start setting myself some sort of routine where I have portions of the day set aside for chores, sculpting, packaging and renovating... so I will be trying to get my head around that over the next few weeks.

This coming week is another one where I travel to see my dad so he can go and get his chemotherapy treatment. Unlike the previous times, this time will be a bit different because I have arranged a visit from a specialist animal collector who will be bringing some tarantulas and reptiles for me and dad to handle. It is something dad wanted to do before he is too ill to do it and the wonderful chap who is popping round has a little education business going on that can be found here:

I am hoping that it is everything dad wants it to be.

In addition, I will be keeping up with all the other stuff and trying to get some sculpting done as well... I also need to replace the car windscreen... BIG crack in that too...

Lots on...

See you from the top of the very long list!

The traveller returns...

Hello and welcome to Inso's World again.

This week has been one of tiredness but full of progress as well.

I have started a small local community project that I am not going to expand upon but takes up a little time so that has been something that has to be accounted for. I also travelled up to Oxfordshire to collect my daughter because she has moved down to Cornwall and will be staying with us until she can find a place of her own. Obviously, we have been spending time together and going out doing stuff so I have been kept pretty busy.

This week has also seen my wife's 50th birthday so I have made sure that she was spoiled and looked after. She puts up with me so she deserves a bit of a pamper every now and again.

My father is in good spirits and has had his briefing with his cancer team about chemotherapy. I will be taking him for his first batch this coming week. The rest of the week will depend on how he responds to treatment with regards to side effects. Hopefully, it will go perfectly and there are very limited side effects but only time will tell there. One thing that will help is that I decided to buy a lightweight wheelchair for him so that he can take a breather and let me take the strain a bit. I made sure it was one with smaller wheels so that he doesn't feel like he has to help... he'll have no option but to sit and be chauffeur driven.

Hobby time has been fairly limited this week; mostly due to time but also tiredness. That said, I have finished painting the first set of Halfling snipers:

Click the Pic!

To explain the colours I have used, the bases contrast with the camouflage so that the miniatures stand out. I understand that this isn't the idea behind camouflage, however, when you are hoping to sell things, people need to be able to see what they are buying so it makes perfect sense from a commercial perspective. I may add some tufts at some point but I think this current standard shows off the little troops quite nicely.

The Emporium... In a bid to actually get these Halfling snipers up for sale, I have been sorting out the mundane things and have so far got plastic bases for them, boxes to send them out in, bubble-wrap to keep them safe and am currently waiting for some labels to arrive. I have also ordered a light box so that I can (hopefully) take some nice pictures of my products (the light in my house is awkward at best). Once everything comes together, I will be in a position to start selling... fingers crossed.

That is about it for now.

See you from Jamaica!

Snipers arrive!

Hello and welcome to Inso's World again.

This week has been one of highs, lows and indifference so I will try to keep things light.

The low point was talking to Cancer specialists with my dad and to cut a long story short, his Chemotherapy starts in just over a week. That will mark the start of things becoming very real and it will also be a time to be stoic.

The indifferent thing was an attempted hair dying thing. I added blue to my red... but it appears that the blue doesn't like sticking to the white bits in my hair... so the results were not 'vibrant blue roots with purple tips':

Click the Pic!

Before on the left, after on the right. Fortunately I have a friend who is a hairdresser and I will turn myself over to her expertise at some point (there is talk of leopard print!).

So... now 'life' has been covered, here's a nice little Hasslefree Miniatures 'Roddy' that I have painted. He will join my Grymn Martian Patrol as a hired mercenary:

Click the Pic!

He is a genetic hybrid of some kind so he will make a good tracker. I have kept his skin tone as pale as I can whilst still using my usual painting process.

Well... it has happened. My Halfling snipers have arrived from the casters and I am very pleased with them. Hysterical Games has done a fantastic job:

Click the Pic!

I will be keeping a set or two for myself but the rest will be going up for sale. You will be able to find them HERE, when they are ready for sale. In the meantime, I have cleaned a set up, washed them in soapy water, based and primed them and they currently look like this:

Click the Pic!

Pretty soon, these guys will turn green and will become part of my Squat army. They will also be used to showcase the miniatures for the shop/blog.

Well... I will be putting up more information when I have sorted through all the casts, got hold of some packaging materials and decided how I am going to sell them.

Interesting times... interesting times...

See you from the happy seat!

Ta-Daaaaah!

Hello and welcome to Inso's World again.

This week has been another busy one around the house and on the hobby front.

To start with, we now have a fully functioning guest room with all the furniture and a bed in there. All that is needed is a bit of linen and someone to arrive.

I managed to get a day where I could be outside and not melt so I took the opportunity to clear out the shed, replace all the shelving and give it a good old clean before putting most of the stuff back into it. There is actually floor space in there now... which is great.

On the hobby front, I have been busy sculpting and have continued with the ogre sniper (no pics) but also managed to finish all the Halfling Snipers so that they could be sent off for casting:

Click the Pic!

As you can see, they all have nice little basing tabs so I know they are mine. They were sent off on Saturday and the casts should be arriving by early August so there will be an opportunity for other people to get hold of some, fairly soon. This will be the first time that I have had my own miniatures cast up for myself so it is a bit of a departure from the norm. It will be interesting to see how they are received.

As well as sculpting, I have been receiving hobby stuff through the post. First, a small batch of Primaris Space Marines arrived from EBay. There has been a bit of a faff because they weren't the ones I ordered but we have reached an agreement and things should be sorted soon. In the meantime, I decided to start work on the lieutenant model... so I replaced his head, moved his helmet to his belt and added a 'bulge' on his helmet so that his bionic eye would be able to fit:

Click the Pic!

In the above pic, you can see the converted helmet and also see that he has been primed, ready for paint. I plan to paint these all in camouflage and have started to lay down colours to see what they look like. I just have some small black flecks to add... but this is going to be the pattern I will be using (with little black flecks added next):

Click the Pic!

It will end up as a stylised version of British DPM. I have put the paints I have used, in the background so that I know which ones they are for later use (I have a lot of greens and browns). This miniature isn't one I ordered so I am happy to use it as a test model to see how things go. Obviously, I have a long way to go yet but every journey starts with the first step.

In other news, I stumbled upon an opportunity that I couldn't resist... cheap Megaro Zamac kits. On this ocasion, Run Valam:

Click the Pic!

This particular kit is one that regularly turns up on EBay for £30+ but I got this one for £5.49. It was advertised as 'bits only' but later, the seller posted that all the pieces seemed to be there so I took a punt... and they were. Bargain. Now I just need to decide whether to add it to the rest of my 'retirement' Megaro Zamac kits or convert/build it up as a single. I am sure I will make my mind up soon... these are the retirement kits:

That is it for this week.

See you from the nice, clean shed!

A new venture.

Hello and welcome to Inso's World again.

This week has been all about family because both our children came to visit us for a few days and my in-laws have visited as well. That means that I have been enjoying going out, socialising and doing family things.

That said, I have also been carrying a bit of a cold and also not sleeping very well at all so when I haven't been with family, I have been proper lazy.

Here's a nice picture of my family visitors (my wife is there as well... she sort of visits all the time... because she lives with me...):

Click the Pic!

That has mostly been my week. However, things are stirring in the aether...

... I have sent the newly sculpted Terminator legs for casting:

Click the Pic!

The legs were sent off on Saturday and I will be getting 50 copies at some point in the future. Once they arrive I will share more information but restassured, if they are as good as I expect them to be, there will be some up for sale to those of you who would like the opportunity to convert some of your terminators into Squats in exo armour.

I have been torturing myself over Squat transports again. I even bought a tank kit to convert but it turned out to be too big. Grrrrr... I know what I want to achieve but I am having a nightmare finding the right path to getting there. I think that it will be something that will bother me for a while yet.

With thoughts on my Squat army, I have been sorting through the plastic bits I have and it looks like I have plenty for all of my army needs... in fact MORE than enough for my army needs so I may be putting some stuff up for sale at some point (but not until I have completed my infantry).

Finally, I have started to get the wood together to begin work on my storage area. That means that soon I will be focusing on getting that done so I can unpack some of my hobby boxes again. I still need to build a work station... but it will be nice to clear some more cardboard boxes from the spare room.

This coming week, I am travelling up to my old RAF unit for a leaving function so I have speeches to prepare and journeys to take. On Sunday next week, I will not only have my birthday but it marks the very last day of my RAF career. I may well become very drunk on that day... I have been saving a vintage bottle of port for the occasion and plan to throw away the cork. Next week's blog post may be interesting for all the wrong reasons.

I reckon that about does it for this week.

See you from the motorway!

Sunday's diversion.

I can sum up my weekend with one word... frustration.

I have been keen to get on with something but couldn't decide what so I just wound myself up and didn't achieve much at all. I sometimes have times like that; when I have a number of projects I want to get on with but my mind is not on it at all. When it happens, it is really aggravating but I just have to calm myself down and choose something different to do... so that is what I did.

Saturday, I went shopping (as usual) and spent some of my Christmas/birthday vouchers on a pair of graphic novels (Marvel: Civil War and Inhumans). I haven't read them yet but they look entertaining. During my trip around the town, I could really feel myself getting wound up so we had to cut the trip short, lest I did something daft and when I got home I decided to dig something out of the cupboard that was completely different to all of my current projects... and I managed to finish the items off. Here are some pix:

Click the Pic!

Click the Pic!

As you can see, they are a pair of mutated Mushroom Men from Outer Space! The top one is a poison spore launcher and the lower one is a mystic with deformed arm. Both of these have been sat in the cupboard for ages so it is about time they were finished. I still need to varnish them (they are still a bit shiny) but they can now join their big brother in the Mushroom army:

Click the Pic!

In other news, I decided to put together some trophies for the winners of the Unofficial Diorama of Doom and thought that some of my own sculpts/casts would be appropriate so I dug out three of my Dwarf divers and added some bases... here are the finished trophies:

Click the Pic!

There are very few of the divers out there now and there were only fifty cast in the first place so these are quite a limited edition... and worthy to be presented as a prize (I still have two more but one will always be mine and the other will have to be either a freebie or sold for charity).

Even though I have changed tack this weekend, I did manage to work on the Clankers during the week and have got a good way through base-coating the last unit. I expect them to get finished this week and then I can tick another box.

Phew! It's all going on here!

See you from the massage chair!

Random Charity Information...

A while ago, I sculpted this:

Click the Pic!

30 were cast with a view to selling them for charity; in particular the Royal British Legion. Here's what they looked like 'in the metal':

Click the Pic!

Well, one of them has been turned into a lovely diorama and is up for sale on E-Bay. Please take a look and bid if you are able to:

Thank you for looking :)

See you through the poppy fields!

A Late Sunday Update...

Before I start, I'd like to welcome Josh and Chris to Inso's World! Welcome aboard and I hope you both enjoy the crazy trip!

So...it is very late and I haven't updated yet. Well calm down, I'm doing it now! I have been desperately trying to finish the dog handler miniatures but have been unable to get them based yet...I'll keep you in suspense no longer:

Click the Pic!

What I have done is swap each left arm with one from a Torsten miniature (Grymn in powered armour from Hasslefree Miniatures). I have then removed the gun and replaced it with a small screen from a GW Sentinel joystick and added a little GS to finish. The helmet swap was the same as the rest but I needed to join the arm with the armour so I added a large pad and some corrugated joints to make it work. The 'dogs' are Mini Mawes from Hasslefree Miniatures. The Mini Mawes come with integral bases so I hollowed out three resin bases from Fenris Games, glued the Mawes and their handlers in place and then filled the bases with GS. I will be finishing the bases tomorrow.

As you will have noticed, the Mini Mawes don't have any ears or eyes. How do you get a creature like that to do what you want? Well, I've decided that the device in the handler's hand is a sonic oscillator. The little red dot on the front is a laser pointer. The handler puts the laser dot where he wants to target and then fires the sonic oscillator which causes a trail of vibrations that the Mini Mawes can follow. The handlers have armoured arms just in case the Mini Mawes get a bit boisterous.

Why did it take so long for me to paint these minis? I went to visit family yesterday and had a great time...that is why.

Tomorrow, I'll have some finished pix to show off and maybe even a hint of the next part of the Tunnel Fighter project...who knows?

Do you remember the Dwarf Diver? If you do and you are interested in owning one, there is a nicely painted one being sold on E-Bay at the moment, that you may want to have a look at:

Dwarf Diver

It's being sold for charity (as you will see) so if you can bid, please do.

That is it for tonight...

See you through blood-shot eyes!

Bandits; Angels High!

Is it Wednesday already? These weird shifts I'm on at work make me lose all track of what day it is.

This is a bit of a change because it is (strangely enough) something I've wanted to do for a very long time but never had the excuse until now. What am I talking about? WWI aeroplanes, that's what.

As you know, I have recently bought a bunch of tanks for a small contingent of Kindred (available from Hasslefree miniatures) and it got me thinking about what else I could use in the little force. Well, what tank platoon would be without scouts and spotters to make sure the road was clear ahead or warn of what strength the enemy has? That thought gave me the perfect excuse for a little air-power in the form of a WWI aeroplane (or two).

First thing first, to buy the kit and in this case it was a 1/72nd scale S.E.5a from Revell. All I needed to do was bulk up the pilot a bit and he was the perfect size for a Kindred (shown to scale...with a Kindred Officer):

Click the Pic!

The pilot was complete but then I had to build the aircraft and I suddenly realised just why I hadn't bought too many WWI aircraft before...they are a pain to put together (what with having fiddly little spindles to keep the wings in place)...so after assembling the thing (NO! I am not putting any support cables on the wings...if I did the thing would probably learn how to fly VERY QUICKLY!!!), I have started to base coat it...this is still WIP but you get the idea of what it will look like:

Click the Pic!

The colours are what the box art was displaying so I thought I'd just stick with it. It will have RAF roundels on it and will be very much part of the force.

If I buy more aircraft, I will not buy all of the same type because I will be going for a 'flying circus' feel...that way, all of the pilots can be aces and have special rules (for whatever system I eventually choose)...

TALLY HO!

FINALLY, I have further news of the Diver. Check out this post on the Forum of Doom:

http://forum-of-doom.com/index.php?topic=12908.0

A Day that will be Infamous!

A while ago, I was reading some posts on the Forum of Doom and someone mentioned that there were no Dwarf deep-sea divers and that they would be a cool miniature to make for 28mm scale. By the end of the week, I had finished the sculpt below:

Click the Pic!

I just sent it to the guy who started the original post and thought nothing of it. Next thing I know, I get an e-mail from him saying it was going in to get cast and that we would come to some arrangement as to whether it should be a profit/charity thing...

...again I just thought 'the charity thing' would be a better route to go (it was a bit of a joke sculpt after all) and completely forgot about it...until this morning.

I recently put an order in to Hasslefree Miniatures for...MORE GRYMN...and there was a surprise in with the ordered miniatures:

Click the Pic!

Not only was it a fantastic surprise but it represents two things:

1) It is my first full-sculpt that has been cast.
2) It has my tag on the base tag 'Insomniac'...that makes it MINE!

What happens to this miniature is out of my hands because it was a gift to the guy who suggested the sculpt...so whether or not it will be sold is up to him but I hope that it will turn up somewhere soon and that it will start making a small amount of money for some deserving charity (my hope would be the British Legion or Help for Heroes).

Colour me happy :) !

See you through the mist of joyful tears!

Thursday, 4 March 2010

As promised...

First of all, I'll apologise for the delay with pix but that's life for you...

Next, here's the finished pic of my 'Dress-A-Kev' miniature...with a standard sized human to show how small he is:

Click the Pic!

On to something more familiar...more Grymn Tunnel Fighters. They are still WIP but seeing as they are all assembled and I had my camera out, they were fair game. The pic also shows a bit more progress on the robot:

Click the Pic!

Finally, I painted a miniature a while ago from the Void 1.1 game system. She is Commander X and she is pictured below. The red miniatures below her are more Void 1.1 miniatures and they will be acting as a body guard for her. They are Black Legionaries...even though they aren't black:

Click the Pic!

Yes, I know it is another diversion but if it keeps me painting then it is worth the distraction. I have been waning a bit lately and I needed something to get my painting flow going again...it doesn't help that I am learning the Void1.1 rules at the moment and that means reading all about the troops...I am bound to want to paint some (and these have been in my cupboard for ages).

Well...there you have it.

See you through the kaleidoscope.

Saturday Surprises!

Before I start all of the usual stuff, I'd like to welcome the newest follower of my humble Blog; Gaz.

...WELCOME GAZ! I hope you enjoy perusing my meanderings through the hobby world.

So, why a Saturday post this week? Well, I received a parcel that I wasn't expecting from my friends at Hasslefree Miniatures. Inside was a die-cast Scopedog in just the right scale:

Click the Pic!

I mentioned on various forums that I needed one for my future projects and Kev said he had one to send me with my next order...but I didn't make an order and he turned up any way! How cool is that? Well, not nearly cool enough as it happens. Why? Well a few months back there was a 'Sculpt a Kev' competition on the Forum of Doom. A 'Naked Kev' miniature was sent out to all those who wanted to take part so that it could be converted in what ever way you felt. I, like so many others, sent my conversion off to Hasslefree and waited for the response. Well, below, is the response:

Click the Pic!

Yes, that's right, everyone who sent in a conversion got their miniature cast! That means that I now have my first work 'In the Metal'! You can see a pic of my efforts below:

Click the Pic!

It is a future warrior wearing armour similar to a Grymn and armed with an auto-gun and power-glove...you never know...it may become available in the Hasslefree shop in the future!

...So to say that I was awoken with a great surprise this morning was a huge understatement!

My huge thanks go out to Sally and Kev at Hasslefree Miniatures!

...By the way...Happy 40th birthday Sally...you'd better have a great one!

Catch you on the sunny side!
