Linking GCC code using the MSVC linker is generally not supported, so you should use the "gcc" command to link the program. I am not saying that it is impossible, just that it is not the intended use of MinGW so IMHO "you're on your own". > >Why? How can I solve this problem? Is there a debug-/release-version in >g++ to? Yes. To get a proper debug build you should use the "-g" flag with GCC, and to get a release build you can use "-s" when linking or use the "strip" command on the .exe you have already built. If you use neither of these flags there will still be a certain amount of debugging information. Also, you shouldn't try comparing the runtime performance unless you are using the proper optimisation flags with GCC. > >If I trie to execute the 5MB exe there is an error-msg. First, I am not sure what the problem is. Have you recently updated (Windows Update) your Operating System? If so, and I am only able to speculate, then this really does not sound at all like it has anything to do with the actual functioning of Msys itself...here is my theory: MS is notorious for disabling any and every OS or shell that was not included as part of their Operating Systems to begin with. Afaik, it has only gotten worse since the introduction of .Net. If what you are referencing here is the .Net OS, then it appears that .Net is simply not allowing Msys (sh & rxvt) to run. It is, however, allowing you to launch what sounds like an MS-DOS console (Virtual DOS Machine?) If you have Admin power, you may need to change your user account to, at the very least, an administrative level of power (system level security/ownership). Do you know if this comes up when you are running Cygwin? Paul G. > Hi, > Is it anyone who can give me directions on how to troubleshoot msys. What is about the difference in the size of the builded EXE-files? I compile with MSVC a Project that is 664KB (DebugVersion). Than I compile the same with g++ and link it with the MSVC linker. It is 5,5 MB big? Why? How can I solve this problem? Is there a debug-/release-version in g++ to? If I trie to execute the 5MB exe there is an error-msg. "DDL-File .DLL not found". !? |

Hi, Is it anyone who can give me directions on how to troubleshoot msys. I have had it running on my Windows.net server earlier. Recently, for some unknown reason, it does not want to start any msys programs anymore. I have downloaded the latest binaries from sourceforge and reinstalled both mingw and msys in fresh directories. Mingw (gcc, ar...) seems to work just fine but msys don't. When I try to start the rxvt using the desktop icon it starts a black console window which hangs without any output. If I try to start any other of the exe:s, including sh.exe, from a cmd.exe shell they just return the shell prompt without starting. In my path I have c:\msys\1.0\bin;c:\mingw\bin;... before anything else. The dlls in msys\1.0\bin are libperl.dll, libW11.dll, msys-1.0.dll, msysltdl-3.dll. I have not changed any configuration files after install. I have also tried installing the msysdtk to see if that corrected anything but without any luck. I also have Cygwin installed, but not in the path. Anyone who has any idea how to roubleshoot it further? Please!! If you use sh directly in a command window instead of the rxvt terminal window then the problem doesn't exist. Until the pty problems are resolved a _flushall() is necesaary if you use rxvt. I saw following problem has been stated before: First all scanf() statements are executed before any printf() statements. _flushall before scanf() is a solution. 1) How can I avoid using _flushall before all scanf(). 2) This problem may be related: In my cmd in Windows XP all printf() statements are skipped unless a block of printf() statements is ended with some scanf() statement. How can I make cmd to show all printf() even without scanf() at the end. Thanks. _________________________________________________________________ |

Hi Earnie. When using MSYS I miss the following three (minor) things the most: 1. texi2html - for producing Windows friendly docs (The latest version at http://www.mathematik.uni-kl.de/~obachman/Texi2html/ builds and installs OK under MSYS) 2. which - I seem to to use this often. (I call Cygwin's version) 3. a version of Bash which understands ">&" redirection. (I do it the "hard" way with "2>&"). Cheers Mike Thomas. |

Ok. Well, it did work. I looked at the msys.bat and it appears that the following line is the culprit: if EXIST bin cd bin Perhaps that needs to be: if EXIST bin cd /bin ....? Well, after testing this (modifying msys.bat), it didn't make a difference. I even tried the old windows standby "\" to no avail. For the moment, I guess I will use the workaround you suggested, Luke > You might also like to try this to verify that msys.bat is run with > the correct current directory: > > cd / > cmd //c cd > > It should output something like c:\msys\1.0 It did. > > BTW, you can easily work around this by making a copy of the shortcut > you normally use to start MSYS, then modify it by adding the parameter > "MSYS" after "msys.bat ". You might also like to try this to verify that msys.bat is run with the correct current directory: cd / cmd //c cd It should output something like c:\msys\1.0 BTW, you can easily work around this by making a copy of the shortcut you normally use to start MSYS, then modify it by adding the parameter "MSYS" after "msys.bat ". You can then use the shortcut instead of typing msysdvlpr. Luke _________________________________________________________________ MSN Instant Messenger now available on Australian mobile phones. Using the latest release of Msys (RC). When entering "msysdvlpr" at prompt: Cannot find the rxvt.exe or sh.exe binary -- aborting. Press any key to continue . . . Apparently, msys.bat can't find rxvt.exe or sh.exe. Entering the commands found in msysdvlpr manually makes no difference. Paul G. |

I've just uploaded a new snapshot to resolve an problem with the mount command. I'm also trying to pour some ``Raid'' on a bug in the malloc routines; so, I've added some filters to the free() method. You may download from http://prdownloads.sf.net/mingw/MSYS-1.0.9-2003.02.17-1.exe?download for your evaluation. Have Fun, Earnie. Minimal SYStem Version 1.0.9 http://www.mingw.org/msys.shtml Snapshot-2003.02.17-1 The following changes were crafted for this release: * Work around an odd malloc routine bug which was causing stackdump of sh.exe. * Change test for bin directory to bin\nul in msys.bat. * Remove a resource leak from the path conversion routine. * Correct an anomily with exectuable binaries that are dependent on msys-1.0.dll. * Debug malloc routines, added filters in assignments of pointers in the free() function. |

After looking at the provided example, and numerous others on the internet, I had limited success with fixing my "delete" key, but couldn't get Home, End, Ctrl-Left, and Ctrl-Right to work as I wanted. After some experimenting, I realized that my Keyboard probably wasn't generating the expected key sequences to match the provided mappings. I wasn't sure of the *correct* way to see exactly *what* sequence my keys were generating, but the following script got me what I needed: read keyseq echo $keyseq | cat -tv After getting the proper key sequences for the 4 keys in question, they now do the right thing on the Msys command-line. My final ~/.inputrc file looks like this: # --- Home key "\e[7~": beginning-of-line # --- End key "\e[8~": end-of-line # --- Ctrl-Left "\eOd": backward-word # --- Ctrl-Right "\eOc": forward-word # --- Delete key "\e[3~": delete-char It works like a champ! Thanks again, Jeff |

The MSYS documentation states that only executables that are dependent on msys-1.0.dll are to be installed in /bin. Try removing it and installing it in your MinGW bin directory or somewhere else on your PATH. >Try `d:\msys\bin\bison.exe --help' for more information. ></example> >My bison works well when invoked by MSW$ original shell "cmd.exe". > >Is there anybody with the same problem ? hi I've got such problem. My shell (sh from msys-1.0.8) treats command bison as a special command and doesn't pass any argument to it.: <example> $ bison --help d:\msys\bin\bison.exe: missing operand after `d:\msys\bin\bison.exe' Try `d:\msys\bin\bison.exe --help' for more information. </example> My bison works well when invoked by MSW$ original shell "cmd.exe". Is there anybody with the same problem ? I don't have time to read sources of msys. Thanks in advance. Zbigniew Zagorski mailto:ku...@o2... |
