Ideally it shouldn't matter, but IIRC this was a crash rather than the DLL not found error. I gather that many GNU and other applications hardcode installation paths in various places, and probably most ports of this software to MSYS/Cygwin wouldn't change this because it is just easier not to. This is in contrast to, for example, MinGW GCC which has been modified to use paths relative to the executable directory. I think it is better to just use the approved installation directory for most MSYS-dependent software, because finding these problems can indeed be a needle/haystack exercise. I'm not talking about a Windowized MSYS, but a Windowsian one.
One that could interface happily with Windows Explorer, one that could
be run through a registry key. A bridge over *nix and w*n32.
(Imagine Bill G. and RMS running towards each other with open arms...)
:) In short, I do not mean, a DOS pif that runs a shell script that runs a shell
that runs a terminal that runs a shell that runs another shell..... that runs......
This is exactly what would perform a msys-here bat file.
(rxvt -e /bin/sh --login -i -c "cd 'my_dir' ; exec /bin/sh")
^^^^^^^^^^
ooops, I did it again ;)
It looks cleaner with a dedicated loader, I think.
> 1) Enhance termcap and readline to use Windows callbacks to process the

What are termcap, readline?
No... forget that... I'm joking :)
(It's really better to joke than to get irritated, isn't it?)
> 2) Enhance bash
Yes...., when It will be possible to "$ ./configure && make" bash ]:)

Well, I like rxvt.

Sounds like yet another IDE project. Why not, it sounds great.
Now, seriously, I have already an IDE project, I won't start another one.
BTW, what about vim, emacs and others. I doubt that GNUsians
would like to reinvent these wheels.
> 5) Create a resource IDE that can create pretty windows.
Yes!!! I agree!!!
Luke already sent me a special build of windres to start a resource
editor with. I haven't worked on it yet :(
It might be a very good starting point, though.
I'd be interested to work on the user interface, if someone is
interested to deal with file parsers.
Any contributors?
> If anyone is willing to work on any of this, we can discuss it in
> MinGW-dvlpr.
Then, no MSYS loader? That's unfortunate.
Ok. I'll do it anyway. Currently, I can build the sources and run
MSYS within Visual-MinGW. (Just wonderful! Believe me!)
As well, that's incredibly easy to create a shortcut to the loader,
without wondering about "rxvt/sh not found".
Manu.

Dear MSYS Developers, Please include rxvt-2.7.9 in the new MSYS, because the current one (rxvt-2.7.2) has buggy cursor handling: it clears too many pixels and destroys left sides of letters on screen. See also the attached screenshot. I've downloaded rxvt-2.7.9 from cygwin, and the bug seems to be fixed in it. Thanks, pts |

Yet another idea of mine. I'm planning to develop a Windows application that could run MSYS and perform a few operations like edit/save user parameters for MSYS/rxvt, run MSYS from Windows Explorer and "cd" to a given directory, IOW a MSYS-here functionality, etc... That application is not designed to be a replacement for msys.bat, but an additional tool for Windowsians. MSYS is powerful, beautiful, but maybe it lacks that little touch that could make it more Windowsian. The attached archive contains the main source file I wrote. Don't try to compile it, all is not provided here. Just read the comments into "WinMain", these describe what the application should perform. Currently, the required environment variables are not set yet, though "winApp.MsysHere()" seems to work fine. Please, tell me what you think. Manu. |
