Festival House Bangers

Over the last 20 years, dance music has undergone an extraordinary transformation. After genres such as house and techno were born in the late 1980s — in the underground Black and gay clubs of Midwestern cities like Chicago and Detroit — they traveled globally and gained cultural prominence outside the US, expanding to genres such as drum ‘n bass in the UK and hardcore in Europe, among myriad others. However, despite the US being the birthplace of dance music, it took many more years, crossover moments and collaborations with pop, R&B and rock artists for wider American audiences to lock into dance music as an artform.

Today, dance music is bigger than ever before, thriving in an expansive ecosystem; from basement clubs and warehouse raves, to massive festival stages with multimedia productions made with the latest technologies. In the 2010s, at festivals like Ultra, Miami Music Week, Electric Daisy Carnival, Coachella, Lollapalooza and Tomorrowland, a sound developed that’s now colloquially known as “festival house.” Blending house and techno production with pop and R&B songwriting, festival house focuses on hooky riffs, melodic beats and harmonic song structures to create a sound that blends euphoria, melancholy and nostalgia in catchy, memorable ways.

In recent years, festival house has expanded to include elements of dance genres that have grown in popularity, from the rolling basslines of UK Garage (UKG) to the stabbing synth riffs of progressive trance and the organic instrumentation of Afrohouse and amapiano. In 2025, this style of house is expansive, absorbing influences in real time. As festivals roll out over the course of a year, these bangers define the contemporary dance music trend cycle. Dive into this playlist of fresh tracks from PAWSA, ATRIP, SoundCloud Ascending artist Mau P, Vintage Culture, Jazzy, Folamour, Interplanetary Criminal and more, and discover the sound of the contemporary festival house scene.
