Filter House

With roots in disco, soul and funk going back to the 1970s, filter house took shape as a subgenre of house music in the mid-’90s. Often affiliated with the “French touch” scene, the defining sound of filter house centers around the heavy use of filtering and sampling, evoking a warm, nostalgic vibe and emitting a modern-yet-classic soundscape.

Originating in France with trailblazers including Daft Punk, CASSIUS, Stardust, Modjo and more, the filter house sound has seen waves of resurgence while remaining a dominant influence on dance music and the culture at large. Daft Punk’s landmark albums ‘Homework’ and ‘Discovery,’ both of which took the filter house sound global, paved the way for the electronic dance music explosion that would follow over the next decade. Fellow Parisians Justice proudly carried the torch in the late aughts and have remained a force, notching two 2025 Grammy nominations for their acclaimed album ‘Hyperdrama.’

While the French scene still looms large, artists from around the world continue to build on its aesthetics and legacy. Los Angeles-via-Portland producer Yung Bae, for example, put his spin on classic filter vibes on his 2024 collaboration “BETTER,” with Danny Quest. The Australian electropop outfit (and former Daft Punk collaborators) Parcels emphasize a disco-laden filter groove on “Gamesofluck.” English house guru Laurence Guy has leaned in with his warmly emotive floor-filler “Hey Baby,” while the modern torchbearers Justice continue to innovate on the sound that their home city put on the map with their recent collaboration with Tame Impala. Dive into a collection of modern filter tracks from artists spanning the globe, including Young Franco, Digitalism, Folamour and Boston Bun, each of them taking the sound way beyond the genre’s motherland.
