INDEX CARD.
.APPLICATION man NOV. 27. 19x4.
#3 1 9 1 7H 11 A w m MW TED STATES JOHN C. HUB, 0F CLEVELAND, OHIO.
INDEX-CARD.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN C. HUB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of'Guya-hoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Index-Cards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to card indexes, and particularly. to index cards having insertible tab structures.
More specifically the invention relates to an index card having a tab portion provided with a recess extending from one lateral edge to a point near the opposite edge, together with a casing of transparent material such as celluloid enveloping the tab and forming with the recess therein a pocket for the reception of an insert.
The invention may be further briefly summarized as consisting in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth in the following description, drawings and claims. 7
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a view showing the face of a card provided with a tab recess before the casing is applied thereto and before the tab is trimmed; Fig. 2 shows the card with the casing applied for trimming; Fig. 3 is a similar view .after the tab structure is trimmed; Fig. 4
is a section upon the line 4.4= of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a section upon the line 55 of Fig. 3; Fig. 6 is a modified form wherein the tab casing is made up of a folded piece of celluloid with an inner strip of celluloid adjacent to the folded edge forming a homogeneous celluloid upper edge structure for 'the tab; Fig. 7 is a section upon the line 7-7 of Fig. 6; and Fig. 8 is a section upon the line 8-8 of Fig. 6.
In carrying out the invention any preferred form and style of card and tab structure maybe employed so long. as they'possees the necessary characteristics, but I have shown one arrangement and in such embodiment 1 represents a card, which, in the early steps of the formatlon of the finished prod- Specification of Letters Patent.

uct, is provided with a longitudinally disposed rectangular recess 2 arranged near its upper edge. Engaging over this upper edge and covering this recess is an envelop of celluloid formed from a single piece bent over the edge and comprising a front plate portionfi and a rear plate portion 4, the latter being provided with an opening 5 e cut is arranged so that it cuts In the modification shown in Figs. 6, 7
and 8, the card is'provided with a recess 7 cshown in dotted lines in Fig. 6, extending inward from the upper edge, and the casing comprises the folded strip of celluloid forming the front plate 8 and the rear plate 9 similar in all respects to the other casing except that above the recess and within this casing is a strip of celluloid 10 amalgamated with the casing and forming a homogeneous celluloid edge structure. In this form, the rear plate 9 is provided with an opening 11 furnishing a means for manipulating the insert strip.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. A tabbed sheet comprising a sheet, a
tab integral therewith-and having an openended recess-extending inward from one of the tab at the recess forming parallel edge guides for an insert,-and side plate portions of transparent celluloid extending over both sides of the tab, the recess and the adjacent portions of the sheet and forming with the recess in the tab an open-ended pocket for an insert.
- 2. An index sheet structure comprising a sheet-having an integral tab extending beyond the tab edge thereof and provided having parallel edge guides for a designat- 10 with a recess extending inward from one ing insert. end of the tab and closed Within the .tab In testimony whereof I afiix my signature by ai1 portion tkhereof, tthe idlges 3f the ltisi p in presence of .tWo Witnesses as follows:
