Abstract

1,176,631. Magnetic switches. E. F. BROOKS (Grigsby-Barton Inc.). 5 Jan., 1968, No. 887/68. Heading H1N. A mercury switch which is not sensitive to position of mounting has a mercury filled housing 12 joining a pair of electrical conductors 14, 16 and a ferromagnetic plunger 18 slidable within the housing and carrying an insulator tube (32) which co-operates with an insulator 22 mounted on the conductor 16 to separate mercury immediately surrounding an electrode 20 of the conductor 16 from the remainder of the mercury in the housing. As shown, a circuit is completed from conductor 14 to the electrode 20 through the mercury but when the flat sided plunger 18 is moved to the left (Fig. 2, not shown). The faces 24, 34 of the insulator tubes meet to exclude mercury and break the circuit. An insulating disc 30 seals the conductor 16 from the mercury. The plunger 18 is moved when a coil 44 is energized and shifts along the housing between magnetic stops 40 (42).
