Abstract
1,198,249. Magnetic switches. ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS Inc. 2 April, 1969 [2 April, 1968], No. 17231/69. Heading H1N. A push-button switch has a reed contact unit 44 mounted at one end of a housing 12 and arranged so that one of its terminals 50 is engaged by a permanent magnet 34 to close the contacts 46, 48 when a push-button 20 is pressed against the bias of a spring 32 and the permanent magnet 32 is biased toward stops 36 within the push-button 20 to allow for overtravel of the push-button after engagement of the magnet and terminal 50. The latter is electrically connected through a metal casing 40 to the metal housing 12 and the sealed contact unit 40 has its glass envelope sealed in epoxy compound 56. In an alternative arrangement (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) the permanent magnet has an enlarged end movable between stop faces on the push-button and the contact terminal which co-operates with the magnet is bent over inside an insulating casing to retain the contact unit therein.
