Chi no Wadachi

Seiichi Osabe is an only child living a mundane life. Just like any middle schooler, he has friends, a crush on a girl, and loving parents. However, Seiichi's mother is extremely overprotective, which causes others to view him as a mama's boy.

Although he does not consider her behavior to be unusual, a certain incident starts to open his eyes to just how dangerous her affection is. As Seiichi tries to break free from her grasp, he learns that his life is not as normal as he thought.

"Chi no Wadachi" es una obra de terror psicológico que se centra en una madre extremadamente sobreprotectora y en la relación tensa y compleja que mantiene con su hijo. Como es habitual en los trabajos de Shūzō Oshimi, la historia engancha desde el inicio y logra generar incomodidad real en el lector. El manejo de la tensión, la ambigüedad moral y la percepción del miedo cotidiano hacen que la obra se sienta intensa y atrapante.

El foco principal está en la psicología de los personajes y en cómo un incidente inicial (que no revelaré para no hacer spoiler) desencadena el desarrollo de la trama. La relación ... madre-hijo está explorada con detalle, mostrando manipulación, dependencia y conflictos emocionales que sostienen gran parte del drama. Este aspecto es uno de los mayores aciertos de la obra y la hace destacar dentro del género de terror psicológico.

Como punto negativo, la historia pierde algo de consistencia en su tramo final, donde varios eventos ocurren de manera extremadamente conveniente para avanzar la trama. Esta sensación de “plot forzado” resta un poco de impacto a ciertos momentos y puede desconectar al lector de la tensión que se había construido. Sin embargo, incluso con este bajón, la obra mantiene suficiente calidad narrativa y psicológica para que el cierre resulte satisfactorio y coherente con la premisa inicial.

En resumen, "Chi no Wadachi" o "Rastros de sangre" en España, es una obra recomendable: un manga de terror psicológico intenso y bien construido, que logra incomodar, generar tensión y explorar relaciones familiares complejas. Su bajón puntual no empaña demasiado el conjunto, y el final deja una sensación de cierre adecuada.

As is typical of Shūzō Oshimi's work, the story is captivating from the start and manages to generate genuine discomfort in the reader. Mixed Feelings

Chi no Wadachi, with it's beautiful visuals that make you stare at some pages for a while, is utterly depressing and I knew that going in, however, as I kept going it managed to become more and more underwhelming and less and less interesting. Characters don't really develop a lot, and even though stagnation is also a big subject of this manga, it's no excuse for how dull the characters and the story were. Before we talk about it some more, let me say I definitely wouldn't recommend this to any non-adults: it most probably won't be interesting enough for you and also it might ... just not be a healthy read, it's grim and deceivingly complex. Also, I don't know why this gets classified as horror sometimes but don't expect any horror, this is not horror, there's nothing scary about this (maybe 30 pages out of the whole manga), it's just unsettling in a cerebral way.

Pros:
- The strongest part is the first volumes, it does manage to hook you in and present you with an interesting take on abuse and its possible effects on a developing child and you really care about what's happening.
- The author does a masterful job of portraying confusion and cloudy judgement caused by underlying psychological issues and trauma. It's so masterful that the reader gets drawn into that same confusion and even though it gets to the point of questioning reality, it all feels so real and human.
- The art is amazing, even more so in the first volumes. They're not just artistically great lines; it's impressive the way the author manages to express feelings and the psyche in the way he draws (or doesn't draw) these lines, sometimes feelings that are undescribable with words even.

Cons:
- The idea was interesting, the execution not so much. Just as I was getting tired of the manga, there's a timeskip and I thought "oh nice, this could save the story"... it didn't. This manga drags on and it's disappointing because it starts dragging on and running (more like crawling) in circles shortly after you start getting invested in it.
- So so so depressing... for nothing. Even if there's a kind of "redemption" or growth, this manga takes a toll on you and doesn't give you any kind of worthwhile reward for it.
- Some chapters are so boring/empty, no other way to put it.

Read if: you love the author and want to explore more of his works and his thought process or you're just in the mood for some decent depressing and really slow psychological manga.
Don't read if: you expect something that will leave you awe-struck or if you're too young or in a very dark place.

I give this a 7.5. Part of me wants to give it something closer to a 5 because I really don't think it's worth the time and struggle but there's so much undeniable talent here that I can't do that.

started losing steam at around 34 chapters. by chapter 45, I felt drained of the experience. I could respect the writing and keep reading if it weren't so exploitative. a sickening display, sure - but a great part of this sickness is on the authors and editors.
through reckless exploitation he gleams moments of humanity here and there. but it'd be a stretch to say he does anything at all tastefully. skipped ahead to see how things unfold and was also dissapointed.

as a child, I would read serialized comic book novellas such as this with some interest, considering them mature and closer to me than books. ...
