Synopsis

A year after the death of their son, Seiichi Kirishima and his wife, Miki, decide to go on an island vacation to forget their past. For Seiichi, however, that is just a pretext: he plans to kill Miki and start life anew. When he tries to lure her to an isolated location, however, she gets away to an ominous cave.

After following and getting rid of Miki, Seiichi thinks everything is over, until he encounters a merciless, gruesome creature. Forced to escape deeper underground, Seiichi soon realizes that there is no return to a normal life, experiencing horrifying sights as his impending demise approaches.

Not exactly winning any points for originality, but so few things are. I'm far more interested in execution. Hideout is the rare kind of horror story that's exactly what I like out of the genre: sparse and stark. That's it. Mixed Feelings

Someone in the review thread said it best. It's a very Japanese story, riddled with trash clichés of classic horror tropes.

Crazy that a story can be as greatly remembered and followed as this one probably due to the art. I'll talk about that later, but to summarize, a man attempts to kill his wife after both are not able to cope with the death of their son. There's a small amount of things worse than losing a child. The pain of guilt over the care, years, and love put into a single, growing person, all flushed away from a stupid mistake both did. None of ... them accept they took part in the problem at some level, and as such, their relationship corroded until we reach the story.

As a setup, fantastic. Disturbing, sad, brutal, human, it seems so perfect to explore the psychology of both, but then the story just turns into B-Movie territory at the flip of a page. Both of them find themselves inside a tunnel system that houses a monstrous child, and some sort of paranormal dude monster who is a bit immortal? It doesn't make sense, and it's not supposed to. The story takes the metaphorical representation of what both of them are going through, and how it destroys their mind.

You can take it as the monster man representing both of them, and their inner horrors. The immortality of guilt being something you can't see yourself feeling, as both use it to kill each other more than a reason for unity. The child, obviously, the tunnels, their psychological battleground. I do wish it was a bit more literal, since it uses these tropes, and these clichés to represent an interesting story, but not to tell it. The manga ends with a loop, just as how guilt isn't surpassed, finished, it only goes to the next person in the world who can't accept these wrong things about themselves.

This is a reading which gives it more credit than its due. If it isn't at all about this, and what's happening is literal, then the story is just B-Movie trash. Both ways it doesn't entirely work… but that art.

We can move into art. A spectacular display of shadows. The art oozes with a creepy, dark atmosphere. The mood uses shadows to display silhouettes. Panels obscure information enough to see, but not enough to process, or to know what's out there. Amazing use of art to convey the utter helplessness of all the characters. No manga has come that far to scaring me, or creeping me out that much.

I loved the art, and it does make the story as famous as it is. If the plot was better, this would be an all-time classic, but as it stands, it's a horror manga, with great art, that's it.

Apologies if this review is all-over-the-place, since that's how my thoughts are on this short Manga. Reading Hideout is not unlike going to a fancy Italian restaurant and only ordering breadsticks. Sure, the breadsticks are great by-themselves, but there's nothing that differentiates them from any other restaurant. On top of that, you leave on an empty stomach. This sums up Hideout. Neither thought-provoking, nor shocking enough to afford being memorable.

The subpar plot lacks any sense of originality or intrigue to support the meticulously drawn panels. In fact, I'll sum it up for you: A man hates his wife, lures her into a mysterious ...
