One Piece

Barely surviving in a barrel after passing through a terrible whirlpool at sea, carefree Monkey D. Luffy ends up aboard a ship under attack by fearsome pirates. And so, after 1155 episodes, the first season of One Piece comes to an end.

What can be said about One Piece? At first it feels daunting to watch so many episodes, then it hits you. Be it Arlong Park, Alabasta, Water 7, or something else, if you watch One Piece long enough you'll fall in love with it.

It has it all: story, world building, characters, fights, and most importantly it represent values. Be free like the Strawhats, dream like the Strawhats, fight against oppression like the Strawhats.

When you start One Piece you think it's too long, when you end One Piece you think it's too ... short.

Call it the greatest story of all time, call it Stockholm syndrome, or just call it One Piece. We'll probably never see anything else like it.

Mixed Feelings

This review is simply a recommendation to watch up to a certain point and then stop.

Within the beginning 10 or so episodes this series suddenly finds its place and sticks it until the source material makes a drastic change to the characters. At that point the anime becomes painfully drawn out and the characters lose what makes them special. If my memory is correct this occurs after episode 516.

There are roughly three filler mini-arcs mixed in. Two of those do not attempt ... to be relevant to the plot and that is very much to their benefit and I feel they are worth your time. You will know immediately when they come up. The Third filler arc which is actually the first to come up I do not advise you to sit through. It is anime original, the details of the plot never appear again, and I do not think it was particularly enjoyable. The last episode of this arc unfortunately is the first few minutes of a canon episode so it can't be entirely removed. There may also be the some odd isolated single filler episode that pops up without warning - they are obviously unrelated and can be skipped. Like Toriko x One Piece, Mugiwara Chase 3D, and Film Z promos.
So why did this series receive a 10? It deserves it. Up until that 517th episode at least.
What lack there is for individual episode quality here or there is made up for by the scope.

Addendum: For episodes 517 and beyond, they are by no means horrible only inferior to everything that came before them. But if they were to be taken into account for the rating it will drag the rating down and they are far from 10/10 material. If you decide to continue the next place I recommend stopping is the start of Wano Kuni. The directing for fights changes considerably, shifting good/mediocre into mediocre/shit.
